Hi and welcome to my orchid channel! :-) I post 1-3 times a week ish!
If you are new to my channel, I hope you like it as well as subscribing before you leave! :-)
This is my flask paphiopedilum ocrchids from my NEW orchid haul/unboxing video from Wichmann orchideen in Germany!
Lots of interesting and fine ones in this order so I´d encourage you to watch even the haul video, link at the end of this video...
This time I shall deflask tiny orchids in agar agar and pot them up in a suitable medium etc.
A 5,5 weeks UPDATE will be included at the end of this video!
Take a look and find out what I got :-)
Thank´s for watching!

Great job Karin, so glad to see the five weeks where survived by your baby Papheopedilums. Can’t wait to see the next update on your seedlings. 🙏🌸🌞👏👏👏

Thank you! It's really needed. Its one thing to let them stay in this almost solid mini- greenhouse and another thing to manage to pot them up/ keeping them in room humidity. But I think I have a plan 😄 thank's for watching 😍

hey karin, looking good so far. I just want to add personally I use roughly the equivalent of 2ml/L of the GT feed if it helps. I would only add 1ml/L for small seedlings. Doesn't matter how often you water them, it's only when plain water is used between to dilute the amount can we occasionally feed more than they need but 1ml/L is a great seedling amount, 2ml/L for fully grown plants. If the label says to go as high as 5ml/L that is something that dendrobiums and cymbidiums could handle outdoors between rain showers for example. The more the roots are diluted with rain or plain water, the more you can fertilize them between so the labels can vary in a big range from 1-5ml. Having performed my own tests I would never go above 3ml/L for fast growing big plants unless like said one fertilizes less often. Even if you are just watering once a month and thus feeding only once a month, you might think right, the label says when feeding once a month use the full dose but it's more the mount of waterings between the time indicated that is important, not so much the time itself. I find it a very innaccurate way of instructing other how and how often to fertilize. As orchid growers we should just get in the habit of fertilizing on every watering. I make 2 big buckets a week for this myself. One in the strength of 1.5ml/L and the other 3ml/L so I have some water for less active orchids and seedlings and for actively growing plants. I just don't think 5ml/L if that is what you are using is going to do much good long term, they just do not need that strong a dose. When making a bucket it is less easy to overdose I find as it's easy to add a capful to a liter of water but add the equivalent to a 10l bucket and suddendly you have to add 10 capfulls or 50ml of fertilizer and you realize that is quite strong. It's all subjective, outdoor plants can actually handle twice that strength if it is only used monthly and they get watered at least twice a week between. It's just good to have an understanding of the ranges our orchids can be watered and fertilized with, when someone says weakly weekly, I do not like that because to me that can be interpreted many wrong ways, what it means is full strength monthly, 1/4 strength weekly. 1/8th strength on every watering. Then once you know your baselines 1ml/L being the lower amount to use you can work out what to feed and when. But I just want to remind you that watering and fertilizing an orchid in a dome that takes a month to dry out should be given the same strength fertilizer than a plant in a breezy airy hot spot that gets watered more regularly. Like I mentioned it's the waterings in between that is important so if they do not get waterings between the fertilized waterings then the amounts need to be as low as any other orchid getting watered on a more regular basis.

Thank you! 🙏🙏 A lot of great thoughts and info on feeding! I'm certainly not a pro on the subject of feeding. As long as my orchids have good live active roots I use the amount declared on the bottle ( if the fertilizer is designed for only orchids ) I sometimes use regular houseplant fertilizer at 1/4 of the strength. Just something I've learned which is quite strange come to think of it since the regular houseplant fertilizer is much weaker in strength than the orchid fertilizer. Let's say I water once per week in general I use the recommended dose. But only if the orchids are in active growth/oroducing buds!! If not I 'd go much lower on the feed. This goes for all of my orchids normally. I grow in many kinds of setups which requires different kinds of fertilizers etc. Rain mix for semi hydroponics etc since inorganic they won't get any nutrients from the bark/moss etc. Well I thought this Formulex woluld be great as its in a way designed for seedlings 5 ml/l. But your're right about the frequency... It's niw been 2 weeks since the update and its not even approaching dryness yet so... next time only a slight amount of the formulex 1 ml/l until they dry out more quickly/exposed to more dry conditions. Thanks for waking me up Tom 🤩🤩

Hi Karin, well I did that too, bought a flask years ago. It works, some might go down, but some will develop. Made good experience with a seedling fertilizer 20-20-20 from Thailand, sad they don't sell it anymore. 😢 Good luck with your Paphs! 😊👍 Greets from Germany! 😊🌺

"it smells very funny" it is probably banana powder in the medium, it is commonly added to most replate mediums. For some orchids, it is absolutely essential (such as Catasetinae) for proper growth and rooting. That is not a way I would have potted up the seedlings because the tray is so shallow and there is no drainage. You're not going to want to disturb them for at least 6 months, so the roots are going to be forced to grow horizontally rather than vertically, which may be an issue when you go to pot them individually. I would want drainage in there because I pour over fertilizer frequently with recently deflasked plants, I would rather they dry faster and get hit with fertilizer again, rather than stay stagnant wet for a long period.

Hi there!! Oh no, I didn't think about the fact that their roots would grow wide rather than deep when potted up as in this case only an approx 5 cm deep layer of barkmixture. Now its been almost 2 months , and it stays damp in there for several weeks.. so yes draunage would have been something to consider but it wont help the fact that they need deeper potting!!! In that case I'd need to disturb all of the plants. At this rooting stage...well not sure really but well I might have an idea. Thank's for enlightening me! 🤩🤩

I hope those little ones do come off for you I’ve got a mini orchid. It’s just come out of a flower mauve with a white centre with a yellow bit in the middle. He’s beautiful first time bloomer and the other little one has not bloomed at all. just plenty of roots and lots of leaves coming.❤❤

Hej, I took 2 bottles of flask with me fromThailand, allegedly Epidendrum radicans. Grew well in their bottles. But potted the tiny seedlings up at the wrong time of the year (end of fall). I also had to smash the bottle with a hammer. It felt like a massacre. At the end none survived. Good luck and happy growing!

@@KarinsOrchids There were no YT-Orchid-Channels at that time. So hit/miss for me. Also bought a fertilizer on this orchid-farm. Only could read the N-P-K numbers, the rest was in Thai (BTW, other language and letters) 😂
