I know this video is a year old, but I just wanted to tell you how much this video speaks to me. I’m researching everything about quilting. I feel a calling, so to say. I don’t even have a sewing machine yet, but I’m buying one, hopefully, in a few weeks. Your videos are all so wonderful, with the tips you give and the encouragement for beginners. You’ve convinced me I can do this. I wasn’t sure about commenting until your beautiful granddaughter came in. I’m also a “Mimi”! My grandkids all call me Mimi, so when she came in I took it as a sign! Thank you for all of your help and encouragement. I will continue to watch and learn.

If it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t have started free motion quilting. My stitching was just as bad, if not worse. I’m now two quilts in and I’m still working on my stitch length and controlling my hand motions. You’re right that you need to start somewhere. I love my quilt and my daughter loved it so much she asked that I make one for her too. So glad I started. Thank you for this video. ❤❤

This is by far and away the best how to video I’ve EVER seen on free motion quilting!!! Other presenters just seem to assume you can see inside their head. 😂 The details you included are exactly what newbies need! Yes, details!!! And I’m not a newbie, but I can always learn stuff and I did appreciate the info on needle and thread and hv been hvg some issues myself in switching from cotton to Glide thread. I like your idea of finding one kind that works and sticking with that! Our heads are too full of problems, these days, to hold a bunch of extra stuff. Unfortunately, I bought a whole bunch of colors of glide to use on some projects, so I’m committed to figuring it out! 😬 Re: burying thread tails: I always used to bury all my thread tails. But it took so long and was so tedious that it took all the fun out of quilting! Then one day it dawned on me: (if you’ve ever had to remove some quilting stitches, you know how hard it is to get those stitches out!) If they’re that hard to get out when I’m TRYING to remove them, what are the chances they’re going to come out by themselves? Zero! I highly doubt they will EVER come out by themselves! So now I don’t worry about burying the tails. ❤ KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
@TheSewingChannel

I'm with you Susan...who has time to bury threads? LOL🤣 Nope!!! Thank you for all of your kind words❤️ Glide thread is a great one! That would be my second choice to Omni✅

I sew on a Juki also. I do not bury my threads, unless it is a show quilt. I make quilts to love and use. There is no single words of advice more important than "just get started." My eye sight is not as good as it used to be but my joy in quilting is ever increasing. Thank you Tracy.
@deafsetter
@deafsetter Год назад
Great video. I am at about your level of FMQ. I don't bury my thread ends either. BUT, I just learned something that makes cutting the bobbin thread easier by not having to turn the quilt over to the back. When you lock stitch (back & forth) at the end, snip your upper thread. Place your fabric so your needle will be in the same spot as you ended. Then do as you did in the beginning to pull of the bobbin. Drop needle and lift. Pull the clipped thread to pull up bobbin and now you can clip bobbin thread without turning quilt over.

I’ve learned that people never see what we see as far as our ‘mistakes’ (well maybe if they’re another quilter) they really only see the beauty of the quilt! An experienced quilter in my family has always said that the things we see as mistakes are always what make the work unique and special 😊

“if you feel like things are getting out of control just stop “ that’s advice that should be on everyone’s personal top 10 guidelines to live by list. This video went by so fast. I did learn plenty of things I didn’t already know. The thing with the bobbin thread and pulling it to the back was perfectly explained. When I was just learning to sew and use my machine I did not understand that. I read it in the manual and a few books. Until this video I never saw it in pictures or a video. In my mind pulling it to the back just meant to the backside of the needle. The problem that caused took me years to figure out. It never occurred to me that the bobbin thread was causing the problem. Years and tons of frustration and two trips to the repairman that I didn’t need later he observed me sewing because he couldn’t reproduce the problem I was having. He immediately saw it and after he stopped laughing he explained. I don’t bury my threads. Ever. I’m still probably not going to do free motion quilting. If I change my mind I have an idea how to and I know where to find you. Excellent video. Your knack for patiently showing and explaining not only how but why is unrivaled. TFS.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you❣️ years ago, I took a free motion class and was constantly told it wasn’t good enough. I’ve sewn since I was 9, winning a few awards ... but I was discouraged with free motion and haven’t tried again. Your positivity is getting thru, I will try again. Along with some big stitch hand quilting. Almost anything with needle and thread

Thanks to you, I just started! I inherited my Mom’s JUKI TL 2010Q. I’ve made a lot of quilt tops but too intimidated to machine quilt! The pedal to the metal hack works great! On the border of my last crumb quilt, I quilted the grandkids’ names. It gives them something to look for when they stay at my Dad’s. I’m looking forward to trying out your brands of thread and needles. You are so right about the lint from the cotton thread!

Thank you for the reminder. I stopped quilting for over 20 years and I have restarted and found that I had forgotten how to free motion so I have been using my walking foot and doing line designs on my quilts. I want to get back to free motion because I remember how much fun it was. This video reminded me of things that I had completely forgotten. Thank you so much. I agree it is like doodling with thread.

I find it hard to re-learn after years of not quilting and also learning new things. But usually with deadlines for a gift 🙄. Realized my machine needed to be serviced and the tension was not my fault. Even so, I needed the walking foot for piecing. I just picked out all the quilting on a quilt to gift. Just stitch in the ditch, a friend told me I had to hold my hands mor like Traci to avoid puckering. Also did not follow other necessary tips for success because I was impatient. I am not sure if I will quilt this one again, tie it, or pay for quilting. But I think I will practice free motion on small quilts perhaps of ugly or sun faded fabrics for my cats or me. I wonder if FM can be used on potholders with Insulbright and batting.

I'm not a quilter, but I think I'd like to do free motion quilting on the bags that I make. Thank you for this vid, so, so helpful. Cheers from Australia

the first quilt you show is gorgous! the stiches might not be up to your current day standard, but to hide a heart in each square for your daughter....? that is so precious and wholesome! ❤
