The problem with the SHP9500 is in 2020 they're exceptional for $75, but nothing more. They punch above their weight class, but they actually dont. Theyre simply not as good as any of the $200-150 options: 6XX, 4xx, 5xx, 400i, 58X, M570 or X2/X3; which are all much better. So therein lies the problem. Theyre legendary for value and to those who own them can appreciate what you get for $75, but theyre also kind of a relic. i cant think of anyone who would buy a 9500 and would stop there. If you buy them, a 6xx/58x is probably on the horizon. I think their gaming is a plus and theyre super comfortable and easy to drive. They're really something youll have in the collection and every so often take out and smile at how good they are for the money but do they ever knock off your daily driver? Probably not. Theyre like the Sega 32X or Dreamcast of headphones, they had a good run and some great games, but they just got crushed by a wave up the performance ladder. But sometimes you go back and play it and are like wow, this is actually pretty good. Some Soul Caliber or Crazy Taxi on Dreamcast? Who needs anything more? (But no one ever just stopped there)

@MrAhuraMazda
@MrAhuraMazda 3 года назад
@@anomalousresult paying twice the price of the $60 i spent on these is nothing. Especially in a community already looking at separate DACs, do you have any idea how niche it is to even consider an external DAC? If $60 is your absolute total budget, no DAC no Amp, fine these will do great. Thats not what happens, people buy these then upgrade. If youre even considering an amp or dac, forget it. That $60 is better suited towards a 58X, 4XX, 6XX, 400i, Tygr, M570 etc.
@MrAhuraMazda
@MrAhuraMazda 3 года назад
@@fe3bal no one who buys this wont upgrade. IF you are the person who has a $60 budget and nothing more, then fine theyre great. But if youre gonna immediately go buy a DAC or amp after the SHP9500, go buy a 58X. The SHP9500 simply doesnt not punch above its weight when the class above it is better in every way.

@@anomalousresult the KPH30I are half the price of the SHP9500 and sound better anyhow. So theres your double the price double the performance argument. There are plenty of IEMs around $100 that sound as good as well.

Hey man! HAHAHA! WOo! Love comments like this that backup the brilliance of these bad boys. You like those b's? You want another one? I have a question for you though: Does that game make you feel weird at all? I had a really bad experience playing it and got awful heart palpitations afterward (using the G6 and K702). I'm attributing it to the realistic nature of the gameplay, but I've heard of some people saying it triggered PTSD or something. It's super effective at immersing you in a realistic war-like scenario.

I don't know if you've ever had them but it's different than just a fast heart rate if that makes sense. I've had issues with them in the past but they're mostly under control now. I used to take magnesium but don't really need it anymore. If I get them nowadays I'll just drink some sleepytime extra strength and it neutralizes it in like 5 min lol. Point being, getting them after the match and not being able to sleep was kind of scary. I was pacing and trying to get it under control by deep breathing as I didn't have any tea or mag.

Late to the party here but I received a pair today and am totally blown away by them. I bought them mainly from the reviews I think they will be good for audio production. But I’ve spent hours today going through my music collection discovering all the details in the tracks. They are so comfortable to wear you forget you have them on which can not be said for a lot of headphones. The frequency response is perfect for me, I really don’t like bass heavy headphones and these produce a solid perfect amount. I was a bit concerned that the highs might be too much from what some people said but they sound absolutely fine to me. A very detailed and balanced sound and you can listen for hours without your ears getting tired. The supplier sent a shorter cheap kind of cloth covered microphone cable with them and when I replaced the stock long rubber cable it made them easier to drive from my iPad and the sound maybe improved a bit.

I absolutely agree with you, bro!. I have owned (and still do) a number of good, well known headphones. To me the SHP9500 are probably the best (cost-benefit wise). These are the ones I continue recommending to those who want a pair of good-sounding, comfortable headphones. For example I have recently purchased a pair as a Christmas present and one of my friends purchased another based on my recommendation, and both are extremely happy. If you have an audiophile soul you will not stop here (the little devil inside will insistently whispering to you "come on, if it sounds so good at 70$ imagine how good it can be at 200$ :-)). If you are a melomaniac there is absolutely no reason why you would need something else. And the same goes for other headphones such as Grado SR80e, Philips Fidelio XHR-2, Takstar Pro, Beyerdynamic DT990 pro....Spend less than 200$ and be happy listening to your favorite music. Full stop.

Haha that would make a great skit. Come on José just try me. I promise I'll make you feel even better than those crummy $70 headphones. It's only $130 more José. Why not take a chance on me? In that sweet-talking voice LMAO. Yes this is precisely the problem with audio and something I've been harping on for the last couple of years. I'm not going to stop either. It's just going to get worse with all the new products constantly being thrown at people. This channel is def going to be against all that, and I'll keep making videos about it because I know it makes some people mad and uncomfortable, and what could be better than forcing audiophiles to confront their own cognitive dissonance? Notice how I'm still recommending the 9500 like 3-4 years later? There's a reason for that.

Great vid as usual. The SHP9500 are unmatched in price-performance in my opinion. Had mine for a few years and recently gave them away because my collection is too big now and wasn't using them anymore. These are nearly perfect. Comfort is one of the best in any price category and the sibilance and the light bass can be corrected with EQ (I really recommend the AutoEq preset for them). It's hilarious how some youtubers (like the one you said...) can talk shit about a headphone that offers such an amazing value while they rave on mediocre 500+ headphones...

Good review Stu. It’s spiked a lot of interest in the comments. Maybe you just have to have the 9500 and 6xx to appreciate the progress in headphone technology. I can see three arguments emerging, (1) They are all you need; (2) They are necessary to measure improvements in new acquisitions; (3) From a strictly economic argument, accept that you will need better quality and go for the mid- to up-market first of all. However, for many people, this starts as an interest and becomes a journey of discovery. So that starting with lower cost, but well reviewed equipment is a natural beginning. This makes sense because it’s hard to know how far you need to go. For some this will be far enough. For others, the choice of rabbit holes is too attractive to resist. After the initial taste, and reviewers promises of better things to come, an adventure begins. The budget for this is often poorly devised and subject to many increases, as that tempting system improvement becomes an absolute necessity. Enjoy the rabbit hole; but don’t forget to take a spade along with you ! Oh, and remember to feed your kids (and grandkids).

Hey, I can't decide between these and the m40x. Which one would be better? I really have no preference of open or closed back as I haven't used or owned 'proper' headphones before. Also, I'll mostly use it for listening to music and creating some tracks and working with DAW and not so much for gaming. Comfort is also really important to me and the longetivity. Which would be a better option? Also, I don't own a headphone amp and don't plan to get one soon (that is causing me problems deciding).

9500 for sure. 40x used to be in Budget Kings but I took it out because it's just not that great of a headphone. Metallic treble and sloppy mid-bass. 9500 is super clean with rolled off bass and sparkled treble (somtimes essy, yes). So keep that in mind. I do love it though and it's only 1 of 2 I kept when I sold off my original crop of cans in 2019. You won't need an amp right away if at all, but it can help down the road a little. I generally wouldn't go anything more than an E10K or K3 though so no worries on that. Comfort is great, longevity is great, perfect for mixing, everything is excellent. I wouldn't hesitate. Use a link in the description if possible as it helps me out :) Let me know if you have any other doubts I can squash.

I have been through a small collection of headphones since I first bought my Shp9500, learn how to make my own cables, sell them buy more gears and make more cables (out of Iove) and the only headphone I have now is my "first love" with Harmon EQ. The SHP9500 blown away Senn HD660s, Sundara, He400 SE, Ananda, and M40x out of windows. Great review and I fully concur with you. I have had many of those situations where I thought someone was knocking at the door when using them. I had to get used to not jumping up every time it happened. I really enjoy them and I'm glad that they exist as I won't go north of $100 for headphones and these are great for me. Especially in hot weather when closed backs turn your ears into steamed cabbage. Of course, there's still the 'Princess Leiah Effect" when wearing them and catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror, but I don't care anymore. May the force be with us.

Interesting, this is very different from my own listening impression. I find the bass to lack presence and detail, and I really doubted your comments about the detail of the 9500s, but I took them for another listen, and I've realized something: the detail that the 9500 provides varies largely from song to song. Some songs sound as detailed as my HD58x, and some are notably less so. Overall I think the jump to the K361 is a better value buy, but then again they're a different class.

If they get destroyed I wont shed a tear but they have proven to be very sturdy honestly compared with every other headphone I have that are much more expensive. They are perfect for beater everyday use. I dont need the best sound all the time. This I can recommend the for. I have replaced the pad with memory foam HM5 style pads and those add bass and make it more fun. If I want enjoy music, I use my HD6XX. If I want to watch a movie, I use Sundara. Hey Stu! I love you content bro. Keep it up! I also want to ask from your tips and advices about my current set-up. I just bought the SHP9500. I don't have an amp and/or dac. I play games and music from Spotify and Tidal HiFi from my iPhone 7 Plus and Macbook Pro 2017. What could I do to tweak the brightness and sibilance of the SHP9500? I can't seem to find any equalizer that's great. May you also send me your personal EQ on the SHP9500? If I get an AMP/DAC, should I still opt for the Fiio E10K or K3, despite only using the SHP9500 on my Apple devices? I remembered you said in your E10K and K3 comparison review that if you're on a phone, it's better to get the Fiio Q1. Also, I was very intrigued about the SoundBlasterX G6, but it's a bit pricey. In terms of AMP/DAC, all I want is something versatile, portable, rugged, and in further long run.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 года назад
Hey man! Thank you so much! For the 9500 and EQ, go with the G6. You can easily tweak the 9500 to your liking. Check out my G6 article/video: homestudiobasics.com/creative-soundblasterx-g6-amp-dac-review/ I'd probably lower 6kHz down a few dB. Other than that it's a near perfect headphone in my estimation. The G6 has come down to around $130 I believe. Insane price for everything you're getting. Absolutely a steal. I wouldn't hesitate. I use one daily and love it. Can't imagine life without it as I game, watch film, listen to music, and EQ with it. It's got the scout mode and SBX (virtual surround), you can hook it up to basically anything (I even used it with my turntable), and you've got the mic input for competitive. Can't really ask for much more. The E10K and K3 are good, but I find the G6 is just heaps more valuable, mate! If you want something versatile, portable, and rugged for the long run, G6 is it. Hands down. Let me know what you think!

Great channel and definitely deserves more subscribers. My advice is to set up the lighting right(you’re using “horror movies” lighting on your face currently😄, not saying nothing bad bro, just a well evenly lit picture with second layer of lighting will give that polished, professional look that it’s currently missing)and edit in more B roll object footage, that’s a very little thing to do, but I promise it will improve the overall quality drastically and, perhaps, drive in more subs to grow faster. And do not be afraid of using your creativity, as I’m pretty sure you have some crazy ideas, but holding them up. That is your charisma and personality man, that what makes anyone stand out in a crowd, not thorough review of a device, but the way you present it in entertaining form, and my advice would be capitalize on that. Love your channel, wouldn’t have spend my time writing this if I would not truly believe that you’re a potentially really high level top blogger worth millions. I truly do believe you can achieve it quite quickly, but you have to listen to your audience. Some will be haters, but none advice, either good or bad, should be thrown away. Good luck to you bro!

Hey man thanks! Trust me I've been hearing that for a while. The new camera setup and gear have been in the works for some time, it's just a matter of getting all the gear now. I really do enjoy the natural lighting from the window, but agree a second light would have helped a lot. I have for sure outgrown this setup. I would just upgrade the lighting and keep everything else, but the camera body (D3200) is severely outdated and will hardly even focus now, even in perfect lighting conditions for B-roll *outside*. This camera was really never meant for video, as I've primarily used it for taking shots with the 35mm prime - really an amazing lens www.amazon.com/Nikon-AF-S-NIKKOR-Focus-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0 As for the other stuff, these videos are shorter and meant to be in a series of quickly going over why you should or shouldn't buy a product. If you check out some of my other shootouts and longer comparisons, I implement plenty of B-roll/images/design/transitions in those. I understand what you're saying, but when a person watches 1 video and then comments with something like that, it's kind of an insult considering how much work I've put into the videos. Definitely not throwing away advice and never have, so no worries! I've always listened to feedback and used it to improve the channel and videos or I wouldn't even be where I am today. That said, I mostly use analytics to determine what's working and what's not rather than any one particular comment, as I can gauge much better what I need to keep and get rid of. This is why my retention rate on videos has gone from 20% to 65%. I appreciate your constructive criticism/feedback! And yeah! I do have some ideas for a "different" type of review. Def stay tuned for that :) I wanted to wait until I got a better camera because I really want those types of ideas to be of a higher quality. Hope to chat again soon in the future!

@@HomeStudioBasics thank you very much for your answer! I’m truly sorry I made my post look like I watched only one video. I watched like 15 your videos on the gear I’m interested in, especially I liked your dac comparisons and reviews. I can tell I like your flow and style and prefer it to many other much bigger channels. I just accidentally came across your subs count and immediately got myself thinking that those numbers just don’t suit your efforts and quality and I started to think, how may I make input to sincerely help. I found that only one thing is lacking(and when I said lacking, I meant to get to top bloggers high level, not in any way it’s bad, it just a small step left to make your channel top quality) is lighting and light depth to the picture and beautiful B rolls. Unfortunately, RU-vid algorithm did not have me any recommendation on your longer reviews, so I assume this, more short videos are better for consumption and your short videos are near perfect. It is rare that people lack something technical, usually it’s lack of creativity, ideas, sense of humor etc. and it’s way harder to fix. But your case is different, you’ve got all it needs and a little small technical and lighting improvement will make a cherry on top, and I hope boost your channel rapidly. Please don’t think that was an insult or critics, it just my wholehearted wish of better to your channel, as your videos are awesome, content is great, it’s highly entertaining, and you’re ona right way to success, but I would love to see the picture lighting quality to be improved and grow faster, as it is not complimenting your great content at all. People make suggestion to watch further or to shut off the video judging on 5-10 seconds of the video beginning. I’ll be watching bro anyway, but truly wish this channel to get its deserved subs count. Wish you a good February btw:)

Thank you so much man! I really do appreciate your constructive feedback, esp. considering some of the nasty comments I get here. Truly a blessing! I def agree - my lighting has always been just okay. Some days it's better than others depending on the sun (I like to try and record at the same times when I know the angle and lighting is good), but you'll really get a kick out of the fact that Tonor just randomly reached out to me wanting to send a RING LIGHT for review!! Haha! Of all things. Didn't ask, didn't even know they were going to email me. How awesome is that? Just one of the many reasons why I don't believe in coincidences. So I'm playing around with it, and now I can finally record at night! Hope you stay tuned for some demos with it. :) That plus the new camera in the near future should really make the vids look more professional. I think a big part of it is the old camera motor/body as well. I've tinkered with so many different setups trying to get a great shot. Sometimes I can get it, other times not so much. My dad got me that D3200 in like 2013 or something. Still great for photos with the lens, but meh on video. I really hope to chat with you in the future and thank you again for your kind words of encouragement and genuinely helpful feedback. You should see a marked improvement just in the coming next few vids! :)

@@HomeStudioBasics I really did not expect to get so detailed answer, much appreciated bro! Really glad to hear you get the ring light! Try placing it right round your camera, I heard that what works best for the look:) or you can place it slightly above you on a left upper corner. Also I’d advice to drive it to the maximum brightness and as close as you can, but out of shot and as low ISO as possible. I’m pretty sure you’re must become already a pro on camera setup and picture settings, you’re must be already using ND and polirized filters and the lowest iso possible with low aperture settings, by my experience it’s gets best picture possible. Very decent picture quality on D3200 BTW congrats, that a great present from a father, coincidentally my father also got me a dlsr back about 8-9 years ago also. Was a Canon D550. But I never started my RU-vid channel since then I was planning and trying to get perfect on everything. By the years I’ve been collecting equipment, trying to find a good equipment is a true hassle here in KZ. But since then I’ve got a two Blackmagic Production 4K cameras, 8mm Samyang, 10-22mm canon, 16-24 Canon, 50mm Canon, another Canon DLSR for backup, several wireless lavalier systems, cam slider, flycam... I was tied in this equipment race I’ve got myself into and forgot about making actual channel. I was very scared to start and was focused in building safe environment to do RU-vid because of that. But truly another coincidence that I am now starting my videos tomorrow and promise to stay committed to it no matter how hard it will go, I’ll just try to do my best and post daily interesting videos that have meaning to them. That not a joke:) I was so afraid to start I talked my friend into doing this together. So he quit his full time job(he was quitting from November btw:)) and this Monday he signed his last document and quit completely and we start tomorrow☄️ Dont really know why I am saying this to you bro), maybe I just wanted to share with it with someone experienced from RU-vid community) I’ll post again as I come up with any idea that, I know what really works and would not be hard to implement:) Have a good day bro!

I use Tidal Hi-Fi and Spotify Premium and I'm mostly listening to Indie Pop, Hip-Hop, Electro Pop, that sort of thing with some Jazz, Classical, Ambient, Metal, etc. thrown in for good measure. Check the playlists! Any of those are going to do really well with the 9500. I'm currently listening now with them + K5 Pro! open.spotify.com/user/stubearblack?si=NZLn5gB6S_CN3DOQaxspow

Always tempted by these on AliExpress when they are on sale for a knock-around home headphone. I use KPH30i, PortaPro and KSC75s for that at the moment but I prefer an over-ear to an on-ear. Worried a little about that peaky treble.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 года назад
Just buy it man! Lol. I have KPH30i and KSC75 now, but I still keep the 9500 around. It's truly valuable to me. I do think the 30i outclasses it slightly because that sound signature is flawless, but I've been listening to the 9500 again since yesterday and it's still a magical experience. I'll explain why. The detail you'll hear is quite astonishing. I actually haven't used one in awhile because I've been testing out other headphones, but I'm listening to many of the same songs. The 9500 is amazing because 1) Vocals become a bit clearer. 2) You WILL notice things in songs you never thought were there. Since yesterday it's happened at least a half dozen times in songs I thought I knew everything about. I've said this over and over in videos and never once wavered in 3 years. I have heard things with the 9500 that I haven't in any other headphone. Without fail. It happens every time. Something as subtle as a voice in the background, or an instrument that didn't quite come through before. This is why I believe it to be just as good as any mid-fi offering you can think of. I've also said from Day 1 that this is a $200 product without question. Some snobs would argue, but they're LYING! XD 3) Is sub-bass. You may not think from a graph that it's anything to write home about, but like I mentioned to someone else in this thread, less is more. It's like by not overemphasizing the bass, you can actually feel and hear those notes. The rumble is just spectacular. It has room to breathe and be what it's supposed to be. 4) The treble can be peaky, yes. I think the 9500 does best with modern Indie/Electro pop type stuff. Electronic music if you will that's generally recorded very clean. I still like it for other genres, but this is what it excels beset with. For older rock, motown, etc. I'd take the K240. The 9500 with the right genres is just heaven man. Straight up HEAVEN. LOL. *redneck voice* SO WHAT'RE YOU WAITIN' FOR!!! *asian voice* HUTTY UP AND BUYYYYY!!!!

@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 года назад
Hey man! Just ask this guy: ru-vid.comvideos He loves the 990 more than any headphone. I've heard the 990 and like it. It has a more elevated bass and a bit of a lower mid recession. It's not bad or anything though, pretty subtle. I really think he's got a great point about the 990 if you think about it. It's pretty much a perfect signature from a technical standpoint. crinacle.com/graphs/headphones/beyerdynamic-dt990-pro/ The 9500 can get a bit peaky/essy at times, but still it's an amazing sound, loads of details, etc. 9500's bass rolls off quite a bit below 40Hz but I've talked with people about the sub bass rumble. It just sounds so good. Not emphasizing it somehow makes it sound more true to life, more articulate, more textured. As if it actually has room to breathe and express itself. People have complained about the 990's treble as well. It's actually been awhile since I've heard a 990.
@HomeStudioBasics
@HomeStudioBasics 3 года назад
Exactly right below 1k .Above? Yeah there are problems, but man it's so close to perfection imo. I actually do believe in burn in to an extent after reading Tyll's experiment with a fresh out of the box Q701 vs a burned in Q701 after around 200 hours or so. He measured both and they were almost completely different. His conclusion was that there is some truth to burn-in, but it's partly in our head as well. I would link the article but the site is gone because they suck. LOL. Nah jk I think they migrated a lot of his stuff to Stereophile but it still sucks that Inner Fidelity is gone. I'm actually going to buy a 990 for myself because of all your videos lol plus I'm getting back into beatmaking and it will be nice to have for reference. I really want to do a deep dive. I've demoed it before but not for any extended period of time. It's interesting - a few days ago I went back to the 9500 after a hiatus away. I didn't notice hardly any brightness over my 3-day session, but it could have been the tracks themselves. It does best with well-recorded electronic music and hip-hop. I think it's flaws become more apparent with badly recorded mixes and masters, but it's a bit of both. There are peaks in the treble area, and it's certainly far from a perfect headphone. The 990/9500 comparison that I'm gonna do will surely be a scream!

Yeah I think so. My phone doesn't do too well with it either. A bit too low now that I revisit it. The farthest I'd go with the 9500 is an E10K/K3 but I DO like the hip-dac because it completely balances out the somewhat hot/bright treble issue.
