@@HomeStudioBasics It really is! No matter how good the gear, the real thing is always better. Timbre is really important, especially when you know exactly how the instruments sound, as is soundstage and imaging, to tell apart members of an ensemble. The 600s (and 6XXs) are timbre kings, especialy for classical guitar and piano, and the Anandas have that amazing sense of space and detail. So I use the 600s for small ensembles and the Anandas for orchestral works ;)

Yeah man! I think the DEVA and K702 are timbre kings personally, but 6xx is right there as well. Great choices. Ananda does have an incredible sense of space and detail.. sometimes mind blowing in it's retrieval of detail.

Hey man thank you so much!! What a great price on those lol. That's awesome. Improved Soundstage? I'd probably go with something like an iFi Zen CAN if you're wanting a bit of extra SS width. Really any iFi product that has that 3D feature is golden for the 600's. I love it with the XCAN, XDSD, and Black Label as well, but those are a bit out of budget. Another option is the Creative SoundBlasterX G6. Scout mode really helps to open up the Soundstage on the 600's, plus it comes with a ridiculous amount of features for the price. I had the HD201 and gave it away along with the 202 around that time after using the 202 quite a bit, but then bought the 201 again and liked it (remember the review I did?) Then sold it again because I didn't really use it.

Hey man! I actually do think that it was an upgrade considering the 4XX's poor QC and build issues. I also don't like it's essy treble, but it's still a good headphone overall. I just think the 6XX is a much better long term investment. For your specific usage, I think it will be great! The 6XX does tend to portray the Soundstage a bit better than an HD600. I would personally never use a 600 for gaming, but the 6Xx and 650 both worked very well for me (with Film as well). Keep me posted on your impressions!

My personal favorites are Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Gustav Holst, and Sergei Rachmaninoff to name a few.

@@HomeStudioBasics I listen to older music. Beethoven, Haydn and further back into Baroque. For rock music I have an old set of mid range Sennheiser HD350 (I think that’s the number).

@@HomeStudioBasics Sorry if this explanation is too long! It's not really a simple answer but here you go. If I never tried the HD 660 S then I'd pick the HD 600 course.. and I'd be happy with the HD 600 for just music and especially with tubes which I've been longing to try but haven't yet. For overall use I do prefer the HD 660 S.. It's kind of a curse to own the HD 660 S but I do think they're better than the whole line up once your ears are accustom to them. The HD 58X has a signature I like but the bass seems muddy and just not as articulate as I'm accustomed to now in the highs. (especially not something I'd like to use every day now that my ears are used to higher end.) So in short I would pick the HD 660 S at the end of the day based on my experience even at $500 even though I don't think they're worth that price..I don't agree with the comparisons between the HD 660 S and HD 58X.. The HD 660 S has noticeably clearer highs and a clearer presentation. Tbh if someone had the power I'd pick the HE4XX over any of the Sennheiser 6XX line.. I just prefer the Hifiman signature strongly. Especially with the right power. (Maybe I'm just in love with planars?) I feel like you can get much more bang for the buck with planars even if the experience is a little dryer or a little more boring sometimes in comparison to what a dynamic can provide in the $300-$500 range. But the detail and staging is unbelievable and more enjoyable IMO with correct power. I'm a detail lover.. for example I love my TIN P1 IEMs. But really for a planar I do prefer them in headphones. Sorry if this explanation was too long! So yes if I had to pick.. it'd be HD 600 for tubes and HD 660 S for linear amplifiers. Currently using a THX 789 w/ SMSL SU-8 balanced and I always use 2.5mm TRRS with a balanced adapter at my main desk. The Hifiman Ananda maybe a little less impactful but the detail and sound staging and imaging is beyond what the 660 S presents to my ears so I prefer it. + They never hurt my ears during long play sessions.. they are very forgiving on my ears and provide the staging I prefer in my headphones.. Almost speaker presenting the Anandas are.. When they're on my head they sound very similar to my RB42s at my desk. This is why I main them over everything else... but I do really want to get into tubes one day with the HD 600. This is why I'd prob pick it over something like a HD 660 S or 6XX in those circumstances.

I know it's kind of dumb They're so used I don't think they're really worth selling.. more like giving away maybe to a friend one day. I could revive them with some better pads. Do you have any Dekoni material recommendations? I heard the HD 660 S is one of the only Sennheiser 6XX line headphones that you can change the pads on and not negatively effect their sound.

@@dillacorn_linux Yeah I heard that many times about the 58X now. Still going to demo it and give my own impressions but it seems to be a consensus. Spot on about planars man. I like the 4XX, but I just find the treble on it and the 400i to always be a bit bothersome. It's just too essy and needs some EQ. Even with that said, planars really do tend to outperform dynamics in the all important instrument timbre category. There's just really nothing like it. What's interesting to me is that a K702 comes eerily close to being as good as a planar in that regard, which is awesome. Like I kind of prefer the DEVA over most headphones, but I still can't get over the sound of the 6XX and still think it's going to appeal to more people (especially beginners) because of how right it sounds. There's just not much else that really compares in terms of an overall package. With other headphones you can nit pick and find different things to complain about quite a bit. With the 6XX, there's really nothing to complain about. The people that do are elitist snobs. 😂 Anyways, it would be interesting to see how the 660S stacks up for sure. Hope to get that one here soon. I love the Ananda as well. That's a headphone I could see myself owning, and one that has to me has always represented an actual upgrade. It's also come down in price recently so more sensible for someone who desires that.

WOO!! Yeah man. 6XX is the easiest purchase one can ever make. I wish I had access to it back when I got the HD600, but it's okay because I have an original made in Ireland HD600 and that to me is timeless.

Amps with a (not over the top) bass-boost are a great compliment to the 6XX. I have an XDuoo XD-05 and a tiny little Topping NX1S (wouldn’t recommend the Topping), and on brighter sounding recordings and bass-heavy genres the bass boost gives them a nice little nudge.

That's pretty cool man! I never got into DJ stuff (still want to get into scratching), but I sample from vinyl and there's really nothing like it. Best feeling in the world spinning records in any capacity. Another guy I knew way back from RU-vid when i was uploading beats there and later Soundcloud (Slumson) actually just popped by recently and was talking about the V700's. That's really neat. I haven't ever listened to those. I will keep the Fostex in mind! Have you seen my other K5 Pro articles and videos?

@@HomeStudioBasics yeah those V700 where the thing in DJ world at that time. Imagine, they were capable of handling 3watts of nominal power and was on a head of any known dj in the world. All the big guys, Paul Van Dyk, Van Buren, Oakenfeld, Tiesto were blazing on posters with those making us to want v700’s so much) Yes I saw all your reviews on K5Pro and comparisons with it, it’s a clear winner in functionality I totally agree and they pack a real bunch of power. I was listening and comparing them in the store with my headphones for a while, and it didn’t took me long to choose Fostex I found the highs and mids to be crispier and the bass is feels faster a notch. It may highly be probable of low impedance of 56Ohms and how controversial Z7M2’s are and how they sound. I personally fell in love with them as soon as I heard them. Also k5pro and HP-A3’s cost is about the same in stores of my country and nothing to choose from, regarding dacs. So Im very interested in what your opinion on the hp-a3. I know it’s lacking hard in functions, but is it good in the sound afterall.

That is extremely accurate man, and in part why I made this video. I've demoed over 100 headphones at this point. I still think the 600/6XX/650 (whatever your cup of tea), are the best for the money. There's simply no other better recommendation to make in the hobby for those starting out.

Hey man! It's actually pretty significant. The 598/599 can sometimes have a bit of trouble keeping up and neither respond well when you really try and push them. Their bass can sometimes get clammy as well. The 600 series does a lot better with Amplification and just sounds better. Snappier, crisper, etc. For me it's night and day. 598/599 will be better for gaming and film because of the Soundstage but yeah. The 500 series to me is still like dipping your foot in the water whereas the 600 series you're all the way in and there's no turning back. LOL. Proceed with caution my friend!

@@HomeStudioBasics Thanks for the response. I feel my audio technicas m40x were dipping my toes in and the hd599 is like having body half way in. Huge difference in detail and sound stage over the m40x. What's your opinion on the hd598 vs hd599. I hear people prefer the hd599 by a decent margine.

Hey man! This is a very interesting comment. I was telling Marko the other day about a new experience I had with the HD600. So I've been listening to somewhat brighter headphones lately, while the HD600 hasn't gotten much use. I went back to it (as I normally do) and it actually did not sound good to me at first (but usually it does). It was exactly as you described in your comment - a bit too dark/veiled, congested, no sparkle or air. I finally understood why some people don't like it. But, as I kept it on my head, my brain became accustomed to it and I started loving it again. Now, this is a really interesting phenomenon that I plan to make a video about. Is the headphone actually bad? Or is it just a matter of being a different type of sound that not everyone enjoys? Because I still like the headphone a lot. I think that what happens is our brains get used to a certain type of sound, and anything that deviates from that norm tends to sound weird at first. The HD600 vs. a bright headphone is a great example of that. Going further, also consider this: When I first put a HIFIMAN DEVA on my head, the treble was much too bright and I had to EQ it down. Sounded great for awhile. Then I started listening to it again without EQ, ignored my initial impression of "OMG I have to EQ this down" and kept listening. The issue went away! I think this speaks volumes about the phenomena I mentioned. My brain simply got used to the essiness, and it started sounding less bright the more I listened. I can still hear it on some tracks, but it's way less noticeable the longer you have it on your head. I firmly believe this is a testament to the power of the concept. As for your questions: -Your reaction to the mid-range is very normal. The mids on the 600 are too forward for sure. I'm glad you pointed this out, because some people will argue with me tooth and nail about it. It really shouldn't even be a discussion. Those types of people are die hard fan boys, nothing more. -Your reaction to the treble is normal coming from brighter headphones, or even just headphones with no treble roll off. Perfectly understandable. The dark sound is not for everyone. -I would remove the EQ and just listen for a long time. If you decide that it's not for you, than that is perfectly normal. I tend to prefer somewhat darker treble nowadays, but again, it's not for everyone. I think you will either have a light-bulb moment and go "Oh man these are amazing" or you just won't. Most people are in the former camp, but there are always exceptions. -As for your mid-bass gripe, I would say that is the one exception. I don't believe it's bloated and have never felt it necessary to EQ that range down. Very interesting that you found the opposite to be true. I personally believe the bass is done very well on the 600's, and most people would tell you that it's actually not enough for them! I hope this sparks a nice discussion. Let me know your thoughts!

@@HomeStudioBasics Actually, right now, i love this headphone. On the lower frequencies, at first i EQed it down by 2.5-3.0, but recently I found myself decreasing it to only -.50, same on higher frequencies, plus . 50 only. So yes, my impressions changed as I listen to this headphone. Right now, that super thick vocals impression changed to rich vocals, although there are some still few tracks that are still too thick for my taste, but the number of those tracks are becoming lesser and lesser. And I really appreciate the vocal presentation, like yes, buttery as they say or for me a yummy thick rich soup. On the bass, i don't know. I'm new to this, but i guess that maybe i prefer tighter/ pronounced bass. Maybe I'm looking for the bass the way my IEMs do it, most of them are U or V shape I guess, something that is pronounced and stays in place. On the higher frequency or ill just call it the cymbals portion, i think im adapting to it. It is there. I think my impression right now is that that part is just "enough". Compared to the vocals which is superb, i believe that higher frequency is just "enough". And also as I EQed down the 3k and 5k to -2db (per comments). At first, i thought there's something off on the vocal parts that I think should be louder ( i think these are the parts where the singers belts the song), but then as i listened to it more, i find that EQ more pleasing and gentler. But as you pointed out, yes. I think it's true, impressions change. My impression changed and i learned to love it. Interesting topic though as you pointed out. Is the headphone bad? I don't know what is the criteria for this. If it is my first few days impression, I'd say it is bad that EQ is needed. Is it right though to judge it on that short amount of time? If it is the impression after a week/ couple of weeks, then I say it is good headphone with excellent vocal reproduction. But does it count? because you might have just like it because you adapted to it. Is this what they call a burn in? (since the product is new) Does burn in affects the product or the brain? If burn in affects the brain and not the product, then does it mean that there's no such thing as burn in?

@@almagcope3569 I know it's been a very long time since you wrote this comment, but I really like the analysis that you show off in your two comments. A lot of headphones need some mental burn in during your listening session to be good. Which is probably why you didn't like the HD-6xx initially and why A/B testing headphones is pretty misleading. I own HD-6xx, HE-4xx, and DT 990 Pro 250 Ohm. For me, the DT 990 Pro always seem to sound the best to me on initial listen, but 30 minutes into the session, HE-4xx and HD-6xx will always outpace the DT 990s in enjoyment. On any given day, my favorite of the 3 can change (most of the time, I find that I prefer the HE-4xx). I wouldn't say that there is no such thing as burn in however. I have heard of some headphone getting better over time, but have yet to own a pair of headphones where that is noticeable.

Hey man, thank you! Still 6XX. To me it's actually better for metal because it sounds crisper and livelier than a 600. No, the difference isn't huge, but it's there. If i had to do it again in this current climate, I'd buy the 6XX in a heartbeat and save money. I actually prefer it more than a 600 although I will never get rid of my 600.

I can def see why you'd say that coming from an amazing AKG. To be honest, I listen to my K702 more than most of the headphones I have lying around here. That said, I haven't heard the 660S specifically.

@@HomeStudioBasics I tried both the hd 600 and 660s and they both are very similar. But it's always hard to differentiate something if you not already used to it. That said, I changed to the hifiman sundara because it has more timber and structure but also soundstage. I think it could have more highs but in the end the sound is even more enjoyable than the AKG.

@@gehteuchnichtsan7911 Always have loved the Sundara and def agree about Timbre! The planar sound does tend to outperform dynamic headphones, although the K702 comes eerily close to having as good of Instrument Timbre as a planar. It's very very close! That's why the brilliance of the K702 can never be understated. It's such a great product.

For you, I think the BTR5 would be more ideal as the 6XX does require a bit of extra juice, and the 5 has more power. What do you say? NX4 or DF Red are also great options, but I think the BTR5 is super convenient and highly portable. Just an amazing product. It also utilizes the ESS Sabre chip found in DragonFly products which is my preferred dac chip for sound!

@@HomeStudioBasics for me, it's sounds more fun yet still having that sennheiser sound. Tiny more in every area, the bass, the treble, and with grsst sennheiser mids, the sound signature is jsut right for me. I don't know if its the lower impedance, but it's loud even directly plugged into my phone or laptop too. I think if it's possible it would be great if you can do a review on the 660s especially with the wide variety of dacs on your disposal.

HD600 scales up very well to amplification. From Cmoy all the way up to Apex Teton! Invest in an amp first and then DAC, as amp has more impact on overall sound than DACs. I have heard many excellent chains like Sr009+kgsshv+soekris dam 1021, HD800s+ RJM Sapphire V4+Yggdrasil but prefer HD600 over most headphones: driven from both solid states and tubes.. What is your budget for amplification to start with?
