Got me a diamond disc, yep, good kit as you said. How long it lasts will not bother me as the reduction in evil dust getting into my welding machines etc is worth the xtra. Also consider metal blades for your jigsaw- I get ok results for shapes. Plasma is the business for fast profiles/shapes/letters etc, to cut set up time, I would probably get one with internal compressor next time. Finally I just zipped thru some Al-you-mini-yum sheet -2mm with the hackzall and "Duct" blade, it cut ezy and straight. I made a stand for my portaband to convert to vertical for small pieces, but hey guys, when starting out, the 110/125 mm angle grinders are great and can be had fairly cheaply to start out.
Same here Buddy! I love the "no dust" from the metal blade! I agree about the on board compressor. If mine had one I would probably use it more! I have a quick review of my plasma going up Friday. What is this mystery metal you speak of..."Al-you-mini-yum"? we don't have that here ;) - Take care buddy and I'm glad your liking the metal cut off discs.
I would say that if you're going to be cutting in your shop more, the dry cut saw is a way better first investment than a portaband. There's nowhere *near* the learning curve with the dry cut saw to make straight cuts, and most people are going to start with things like old bed frames, drops from other shops, and cheap pieces of angle & flat bar from somewhere like Lowe's or Home Depot. So, one of those dry cut saws with a good blade, and a grinder with grinding wheels, flap discs, and cutoff wheels, and the majority of the beginner's cut and prep tools are good.
Good point buddy. I'm considering buying a dry cut saw but I'm still torn because I think I'm probably faster bringing the saw to the work, but for someone starting out, there is a learning curve doing that, like you mentioned
@@BrandonLund For a lot of the stuff I've seen you do, the portaband is perfect. A lot of those things like hitch mounts, pipe with welded flanges, and such wouldn't fit into the dry cut saw square, anyway, and a lot of what you do seems to be repairs. But, for things like square tube, pipe, angle iron, shaft stock, bearing stock, and bar stock, that you cut from new lengths to build a frame or something from scratch, the fitup that you get off the dry cut saw is WAY better than any portaband or chop saw, and is much easier & faster than lining everything up using cutoff disks. Plus there's the fact that the dry cut saw makes chips instead of dust, which I absolutely love because respirators aren't exactly comfortable. *PLUS* the dry cut saw will cut aluminum perfectly, which my shop works with a lot, and it saves a lot of time on cleaning up edges & removing contamination. Now, I will say that for someone who does a lot of repairs, or does a lot of mobile work, or is very limited on space, the portaband can definitely be the better choice at first, but there will always be times, no matter which one you get, that you will wish you'd bought the other one. I'd say get whichever one you want, and then save from a few jobs for the other one. It's like any other tool; one is good, but more is better. That's why we all end up with more than one grinder. Speaking of grinders, I don't know if it's in your area, too, but the Airgas locations near me have had a deal on 2-packs of Dewalt 4 1/2" paddle switch angle grinders; $100 for two! They're lucky I left them more to sell.😂
I've got both a vertical and a horizontal bandsaw but I didn't get an angle grinder until I started welding a year ago...now I don't know what I would do without it or survived all these years without it.
D Rickard have you tried the metal /diamond blades yet? If not, your going to love them! I just bought one and I'm so impressed I'm doing a review for my viewers. They say it will make 1000 cuts! I've yet to get that far though. For 14 dollars and no dust it's awesome!
Brandon Lund I have and they are great just really unforgiving if you don't keep it perfectly straight in the cut...I'll also say name brand makes a difference. They'll flat tear through a bunch of wire shelving. Those shelves were going through the fiber disks like crazy. I especially like that they stay the same diameter.
well I have to disagree on band saw versus reciprocating saw, but my reason is the throat depth, if you ever find yourself cutting out a floor on a car / truck, truck floor, or anything with more than a few inches deep, a bandsaw wont cut it. but with that being said, it will be next in line. a grinder, that uses a 7/8" center hole, with a 5/8"X11 thread in the USA is first choice, and for budget minded people Harbor Freight makes a reciprocating saw with coupon for $19.99 that's a good starter. as for the cut off saw, I do have one, but it is used some, but I do go for easier methods when I can. & I do have portable bandsaw, but it broke a few months ago & not replaced yet. it worked fine, until I lubricated it, & now blade pops off as soon as it touches anything to cut
Yah for autobody a bandsaw is a no go. I havent tried the HF reciprocating saw... is it any good? For the work I do a bandsaw is my go to. Thanks for the great comment! Cheers
well for side money I do autobody, & last year I did a couple clips, & shop had a HF reciprocating saw, & I used it for my rough cuts, 1 was cutting floor out of truck & donor cab to put in good truck, & this was the "cheap one" & I love the handle that can be rotated, was very convenient for the different angles, so I had to buy one I was so impressed, but I had 2 Porter cable brands, & my old one uses allen wrench to loosen blade, my newer one was first desigh to have a blade twist lock, so they are a bit old, but also heavy, so now my lightweight HF one is my go to, lol. unsure how it will hold up I the long run. but for now I am happy with it. I am going to start a build on a welding truck, & I will have a porta-band on it, but I will probably grab a reciprocating over band, out of habit from decades of use, & my band that broke, I found used a decade ago, & around Sept last year I wanted to "clean it up" before I put it in my truck, & after I lubed it, blades wont stay on, & I been told parts are worn, so time for a new one. it was also a porter cable brand, but I never grabbed the band unless heavy wall, & sure it was faster, but my normal uses was building parts for cars, trucks, or trailer frames.
Make sure to specify C25 not pure Argon-it will weld-but not as nice as C25. Bandsaws v Abrasive chop saws- B/saw- thinner kerf, no dust or sparks, and way less NOISE. I'm not in the US but I get my bottles (tanks) on contract, and on mine, if I want to change to a smaller bottle for site use I can, or get a bigger bottle for shop use and so on. Over here, we have the "smart top" bottles which come with their own regulator - I've never used them but might be worth checking out. I have the Milwaukee portaband deep throat (behave yourselves) portaband- great tool, and I have their "sawzall" which excellent- don't be fooled by the YT tests into thinking its a demolition tool, it cuts steel/aluminium and sheet just fine with the right blade. Jaques Daniels My hair is out if control! Thats why im always wearing a hat now Jaques! Have you tried the new 4 1/2" diamond blades? I just picked one up to cut metal an it is super nice...no dust! 14 USD and they claim it will make 1000 cuts. I'm using C-25 but I think I referred to the gas as Argon. I do have a bottle of straight argon for Al-lou-min-e-um ;)
I forgot about those diamond disks- gonna get me one today, the no dust is worth the extra, plus for newbies, the risk of a fibre disk breaking is a consideration, so the diamond discs should be both cleaner and safer. For any newbies- discs shattering is fairly rare now, you can wreck em if you don't keep em square to the cut, so always be careful - resepect em but don't be scared of using em.
Excellent advise Jaques! Your gonna love that diamond disc. For 14 usd, It's advertised as 1000+ cuts...well see. if i get 500 cuts, I would still be happy! They cut really nice. I might do a quick video. I completely agree that this is probably a safer disc for someone who is just starting out that might not have good control and have a risk of pinching the disc or getting scared like you mentioned. I had a wheel explode in my face when I was around 12 years old. A piece embedded in my eye and they thought I was going to loose my eye. Fortunately I never lost my vision. I remember my hands getting bit by the grinder a lot as a youngster too. All my injuries were because I was always too confident that injuries would never happen to me so I never wore the appropriate gear. YOUNG AND FOOLISH...and VERY lucky.
