My analysis based on the video: The Tiger is a more versatile tank, able to handle many different roles depending on its layout. The IS-2, on the other hand, seems like it has a very specific playstyle: heavy artillery, able to stay on the move and soak damage where it can, yet deal precise damage when allowed. The IS-2 works best when either in the hands of a skilled operator or when in a team configuration. The Tiger offers more flexibility, and can be modified to fill any assault roles required, be they anti-tank, scouting, or heavy support.

Two heavy tanks known in real life to be very tough and hard to destroy due to heavy armor - in WT: don't count on armor in either, it is very easy to penetrate and will help you only if you are very lucky. No tank's armor was designed to withstand hits from 50 meters and this is standard engagement distance in WT maps.

In my hundreds of battles in the tiger, I've never once penetrated the lower plate of the IS 2. And I've definitely tried.

It wasn't even a contest, IS-2 was developed from studying a captured Tiger I. IS-2's BR should seriously be at least 6.0, but Gaijin will never bump it up due to Russian bias.

German tank: shoot anywhere, and it's a one-shot kill. Russian tank: you have to shoot at specific places in order to pen. We see this behaviour *regularly* throughout this game, in several different tanks. It's an *absolute* advantage for the russian tanks. *How is this balanced???*

Fun fact, the IS-2 was one of the only relatable heavy tank during WWII. The tiger couldn’t even reach the battlefield without breaking down.

Being able to fire the Tiger main gun nearly 3 times for a single shot from the IS-2 is still quite an advantage.

The Tiger is a 1942 tank, the IS-2 is 1943 tank. A more apt comparison could be made with the IS-2 1944 and the Tiger II (P). Even then, though, the IS-2 and the Tiger aren't that far off from each other in War Thunder. Comparing the two in terms of three important characteristics (and some of the less important ones)... 1. Mobility Unlike on the video, I think this one goes slightly for the Tiger's advantage. Yes, the reverse speed of the Soviet tank is quicker, but my feeling is that the Tiger can probably maintain speed better while maneuvering, and speed on off-road conditions matters more than top speed on paved road. Neutral turn also often isn't the fastest way to turn a tank around, and you can pivot a Tiger around pretty fast by slamming on the brake on one of the tracks. That said I wouldn't necessarily give conclusive points advantage to either in terms of mobility. Maybe half a point for the Tiger? 2. Armour This is where the Tiger's earlier design becomes a vulnerability. Undoubtedly it's weaker than the IS-2... at least in equal situations. It's chassis is basically a box with minimal angling. However, the IS-2's weird hull design negates some of the advantages of angled armour, and shooting through the upper hull is a simple matter if it's exposed. The turret is tougher to penetrate, though, so if both tanks are hull-down, the IS-2 has a definite advantage. Point for the IS-2. 3. Firepower This is where the different philosophies between Soviet and German tank gun design start showing. The Germans preferred guns that had good reload, flat trajectory, good accuracy at long ranges, and excellent penetration. The Soviets tended to sacrifice reload rate and accuracy in favour of more destructive shots. The IS-2 is no exception, and this makes it difficult to compare its gun to that of the Tiger. The IS-2's gun is undoubtedly more modern than the Tiger's gun, which was adapted from the (in)famous 8.8cm FlaK 18/36/37 gun into the 8.8cm KwK 36 L/56. The flak gun had been used as a portable anti-tank gun in the African campaign, and its success in this area basically started the design of a tank that would use it as the main gun: This eventually became the PzKpfw.VI "Tiger". In terms of historical comparison, the 88mm gun was known for being exceptionally precise and feared for its great penetration even at long ranges. Its relatively swift reload also meant that a Tiger could put shots down range much faster than an IS-2. However, at close ranges the IS-2 with its larger caliber gun could devastate tanks like the Tiger or the Panther, and especially in fights where terrain constrains the fighting distances (like brawling on towns or cities), I would say the IS-2 probably had the firepower edge over the Tiger. However, since the guns are so different and have their unique advantages and disadvantages in different battlefield situations, I'm not awarding any points for either. They are different, yet more or less equal in effectiveness - the Tiger excels at long range, the IS-2 comes to its own at close range engagements. I would also point out that the shell with highest penetration is not necessarily the "best" shell to use. In most situations, the PzGr and PzGr.39 shells are your "bread and butter" in the Tiger and the effectiveness of the tank really depends on these two shells. One has slightly better penetration, the other has slightly more explosive filler. Both are great shells. On the IS-2 ammo, you get a similarly decent selection of APHE shells. No big difference here honestly, aside from the Soviet shells having more explosive filler due to being significantly larger caliber. 4. Gun handling, survivability, and other factors The Tiger has better gun handling due to its eight degrees of gun depression. That's five degrees more than the IS-2 has, and makes a substantial difference in how far you have to climb a hill before you can shoot over it. In terms of survivability when a hit penetrates the armor, I would actually rate the Tiger better due to it having more crew members and more spaced out in the box-like chassis. In the IS-2, all the crew is pretty close to the centerline and very vulnerable to a single shot piercing the fighting compartment. The result is that I tend to see a lot more IS-2 tanks get OHK'd than Tigers - with the exception of ammo explosions, of course, which are pretty equal for both. This in my opinion is worth half a point for the Tiger. The total point score is... One point for the Tiger, and one point for the IS-2. Resulting in the usual conclusion that the tank's crew and commander are what really matters!

Tiger is giant big box with 10% area of indestructible bouncing driver port. IS-2 is small and well angled with only a 7% driver port on the front which can be easily penetrated, but might also bounce. Yes the Tiger is great if the enemy gun is disabled or just keep shooting your bouncy driver window until they run out of ammo.

Tip: throw smokes at every corner that is near an enemy strong hold

Can you please fix battle rating ? do you know how frustrating to grind the German tanks ? i keep getting in matches with my Tiger and Panther D against the british FV4202 and Caernarvon AND Centurion MARK 3 all 6.7 br wich has better armor that 88 cannons cant pen also FV4202 and Caernarvon HAS WAY MUCH BETTER cannons with over 220 pen ... ITS SO BROKEN AND I END UP QUITING THE GAME AND NEVER PLAY WARTHUNDER for the next MONTHS . FIX THIS PLS

I say give the Tiger an extra point for it's reload speed, but this assessment is, truly, right.

The IS-2 tank was armed with a slow firing main weapon the D-25t gun. Ammo for this weapon was in two part : the cartridge case and the shell itself. The loader had to deal first with the shell, later on with the cartridge itself, making the loading procedure slower than that of the Tiger tank. There was another problem: The IS -2 carried a modest load of only 28 rounds vs about 68 rounds for the Tiger. Also the sights of the Tiger were better, giving the opportunity of better aim shots. With such poor ammo stowage capacity, the Is-2 was always under the logistic nightmare of running out of ammo for its main gun.

Tiger H1 should be the same BR as IS-1!

Even though their battle ratings are same it doesn't mean their comperable :P the Js 2 has 122 boom stick and better armor which should place it on higher br like 6.0 or something for balance :P *Note Don't forget Stali will guide Js 2s shots :)

I love both of them.

As a large Tiger and is2 player I can say thr tiger can be very difficult to penetrate while angled and can easily take out the is2 but its the same for the is2 the is2 can take out it easily as long as its not angled and is at close range. The tiger is better at range then the IS2 but the tiger is also ment to be a flank vehicle it seems. However if you pen a tiger most players with it dont know what they're doing they take the most ammunition possible and with a 8 second reload there is no way you're gonna even shoot half of those rounds before the battles over. My advice take 22 shells it makes it much more difficult to get ammo racked and without a doubt will save you. Unless you're a incredibly bad shot you aren't gonna run through all 22 rounds.

The thing is depression is more important than elevation and 16 degrees of elevation is plenty. The Tiger's gun is better and should have won that point

I find with two bad players, the IS-2 will win however with two good players the Tiger 1 will win. The tiger one is harder to use however like most german tanks if you understand how to use it properly it is a wonder and can dominate the battle field.

You forgot to name that if you face the IS-2's back to any enemy tank, the transmission, engine and everything else will litteraly absorb all enemy fire, making you unkillable if not shot in the turret.

I remember playing IS-1 in 2015, when you are constantly matched only against tigers and panthers. They got like 90% win rate

I had both tanks , played them ALOT and i fought against both of them ALOT .. i would take the tiger over the IS-2 any day.. If you know what you are doing, the tiger becomes a beast.. IS2 on the other hand ... not so much. IS2 it's all nice on paper and in this video but ingame .. it's another story.

i like how they describe a 'heavy' tank by saying "if an IS2 hits you anywhere, you're a goner". i would also add that most engagements are decided after the first shot: the is2 can certainly 1shot the tiger, with a chance to survive a hit even if the tiger shot first. put it this way: even though they have the same BR, the is2 clearly has the advantage in firepower and armor. i don't think smoke is as effective as an extra 18mm of angled armor, and when 1 shot is all you need, the slow reload is not a factor

I have 1800+ hours on Warthunder and I have to say... It's all about playstyle and how smart you play the tank. Both have their strong sides and bad sides, but overall the tiger I is the tank I enjoy the most and perform best in. :) My combined stats: 409 battles in IS-2 and IS-2 mod. 1944 win rate: 54,65% Kills: 596 465 battles in Tiger H1 and Tiger E win rate: 61,9% kills: 754 The kill count really shows how good the tiger I's firerate is. :D

The ergonomics part was left out. Usually the tank that can see its enemy first wins. The tiger had good a view and the IS-2 very poor sights. The Tiger was roomy inside so the crew could work together better, the IS-2 was very cramped to the point, that it inhibited proformance.

If the Tiger player is smart IS-2 won't be a problem. Angling your armour effectively can make even the 122mm bounce and Tiger's 88 has no problem penetrating the IS. Just shoot the cheeks and the IS Is dead. Tiger's 88 Is also very capable of 1-shoting most tanks.

Is-2 no gun depression and that entire area under the turret is 1 shotter's dream.

This is only more interesting since these two goliaths actually met in combat.
