Moog.. please do an electric conversion.. yourselves, show us. Something cool. I know that you know cool. Im a tiny channel that found RU-vid because of MCM. !!! Ps your music is the best sunday music ever!
Lol nice job beating them by 3s on the lap mate (I mean on the stock arguably that might be harder and im sure they have more experience with the modded one anyway)
The HR31 wins, because for me it's all about the nostalgia. Cars like that are time machines.. they'll take you back to a particular point in time and let you experience it through all of your senses - sight, touch, smell, sound and taste (if you're keen enough). Modified cars have their place and are great too, but as soon as you modify a car you lose a little bit of what made it so special in the first place. Great video ✌
Absolutely with you on that one. The drawback is, (there are always drawbacks) to preserve that nostalgia (and its value) you pretty much have to keep it in a garage, under a blanket. Which is kinda sad coz the car wants to be driven.
Finally someone with some R31 content! It’s one of my five most favorite cars and my absolutely favorite Skyline! Thanks a lot, guys! You just got yourselves a new subscriber 💪
The HR31 HICAS was super novel by 1985 standards, but in 2022 the bushes in the subframe need to be replaced and the HICAS deleted. It fixes the floaty rear-end situation like you wouldn't believe. The NICS RB20 on the other hand is beyond saving, and needs an ECCS Red top or later silver top at minimum.
The 2 door HR31 was homologated by Nissan in 1987 for Group A racing as the GTS R with factory Garrett To4E, big injectors, new ecu and huge intercooler. Gibson Motorsport added 22psi boost & a Hollinger 5 speed creating the 500hp RBDET-R race car that flogged all of the other Group A V8 Ford's and Holden's at the time in the hands of Mark Skaife & Jim Richards
Flogged is a massive exaggeration. They barely finished a race in 1988, and managed three round wins in '89 and '90 in total. What the HR31s did have going for them, as they were much less competitive against the Sierras here than they were in Japan, was that they were simple and reliable, and easy to drive. They were always outgunned in a straight line.
Sierras were 100kg lighter and had more HP so hard to beat with the Nissans. CAMS got rid of the turbo cars in favour of supporting 5litre pushrod ford and Holden V8s after the Godzilla Nissan's changed the sport. This was the start of the end for the Australian car industry which ended as an in economic mess in Australia in 2017 as to he race on Sunday sell on Monday touring cars was a bet on the wrong cars.
@@Glynbosisto1 I would label that yarn '...based on a true story. Fact is we were second to last worldwide abandoning Group A and it would have had more to do with the lack of any other new homologations since 1986-87, crowd desertion, spiralling cost and lack of manufacturer interest than the GT-Rs (which were STILL beaten by ancient BMWs and Sierras in 1992, even after a proportionally harsher weight penalty to the M3s). We lost the automotive industry in a trophic cascade once the Abbott government cut off the support Holden had relied upon since 1936. Of course this was completely unnecessary as every car manufacturing nation in the world heavily subsidises their manufacturers and logistics channels.
Scotty drives the HR31 like James May then gets in the foe doe and the Dick Johnson comes out! Race car drivers names are incredible! Dick Trickle always made me giggle when I was a kid and others that I can't think of right now.
Definitely the GTSX, racing heritage, they look awesome, IRS. Easy to swap out a bigger cube RB later. In saying that the Ti is a very cool and quick car for such a basic setup.
Loved this video alot, I laughed when you said this is the car the grandmas drove around in, so true because I bought my 31 TI from a grandma! Awesome content
Love te TI! . Just love the Sedan vide.. I had a Opel Vectra A 2000 4x4 2.0 16v turbo (c 20let )back in the days.. Damn i mis that car.. Thats why Benny's Creta is my alltime favorite! And just alround love for all you Aussies😛.. Much love from The Netherlands..
Well said James, I have owned both the GTS X coupe & R31 Shilouette GTS 5 speed - standard vs standard GTS X is far better all round performance package👍🏼
The HR31 is on some 15-year old Goodyear Eagle LS2000, so no wonder it was sketchy. I think it would have been better on some newer rubber. But great video nevertheless, love both Skylines :)
@@haltech They are indeed impossible to find. The world was a different place back then. Probably a good thing I didn't become the owner back then, as I'd have probably ruined it with tacky mods being young and naieve. I'm now the proud owner of a Series 3 late model Soarer with a Supra 6 speed and 400rwkw, so life isn't all bad.
@@haltech I did buy an auto for 5k as a kid, Put a manual, Bigger turbo, intercooler, ect. blew the motor. Now I’ve just kept it in the garage and after seeing what they are asking for them I don’t know what to do with it because what I want to do I might be afraid to bend it
Epic video.. I agree 100%. I could never own that coupe, I can't not mod cars so for me I'd take the 300k+ dirty old sedan to keep my conscience in check and leave the purity for the purists..
Which one would YOU rather have? Tell us in the comments! In this video we pit our Project AW35UM against its high-class counterpart to find out how does a pristine JDM classic Nissan HR31 GTS compare to a more pedestrian R31 Skyline Ti of similar vintage but modified with a fair bit of modern tech? Oh, and we've invited a special guest to help us decide:) More on the R31 Skyline build: R31 Skyline Wheels, Tyres, Suspension: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uEiNMUXtvEk.html R31 Skyline Fuel Level Setup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GsB18_C_Huo.html R31 Skyline Build Series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HRM4nnh6AYY.html . 15 years ago I had the opportunity to buy a HR31, wasn't confident in it keeping its then "high" price of $12000. Hindsight is 20/20, and I'm just glad these classics are being appreciated as much as they should be.
I was lucky to find a GTSX coupe about 12 years ago for 5k. Had already had an RB25 + 5 speed swap done. Mine has the best of both worlds I guess, old school charm with modern power. R33 steering rack, R33 4pot calipers and discs, solid Z31 subframe bushes - Hicas is binned, 300kw and TE37s with sticky rubber. Always kinda wanted to build a retro HR31 Z-tune kind of build. Owned all models of skyline, the HR31 I'll always keep.
Love r31's japanise and ausdel so glad to be seeing them more in videos. Love both cars but anyone that knows anything about suspension knows a well set up solid rear beats a bad irs any day and hr31's are swing arm irs so I know what I'd prefer.
I have a soft spot for both R31 and HR31, but I can tell you it does not take much by way of suspension work to bring the HR31 right up on track (I have one that I turned into a track car years ago, from a really nice road car!) Ironic given the comments in the vid but one of the first things is to disable the rear steer and lock it up tight. The rear just squirms and moves around otherwise. Cool and nice on a road car driven at six tenths but on track it was an answer to a question that didn't need asking. I would love another HR31 as a nice weekend cruiser again.
Moog said the back was stepping out constantly, but I think it's just sloppy hicas bushes giving that feeling - mine literally fell out when I undid the rear subframe bolts on my GTS-X. I owned a 31 sedan with a locked diff as well, so stepping from that to the coupe with IRS and hicas feels immensely different back to back
Great video. I wish you would do more content on electronically controlled transmissions/automatics. I’m putting together a Toyota dual VVTi engine swap mated to a U340i/U341i. I’m potentially looking at the Elite 1500. What would also be helpful/informative, if you talk about what kind of inputs, etc typically are married/divorced between a Haltech and the OEM ecu
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!!! PLEASE! PLEASE!!! PLLLLEEEEEASE! Do a FULL rb24det stroker engine!!!!!! I have a 20 block sitting here with a 26 crank I wanna put together. :) Would be cool to see a nice build.
Thats why i have a few, s2 silo, s3 cams/ma logbooked, etc with a Heap of Autocross wins with N/A. . Fist car was 16 and reshelled 3 times etc. love my Nissan's
The purity for me... I would like to know are you running the same tyres? As 1 final comments stated, tyres. It be reasonable to think that with aftermarket wheels would come with newer better compound tyres, and they can make a massive difference.
Put some RE003's or Michelins on the GTS and would probably increase it's road n track manners by a fair whack. Still probably has 30yr old bushes all the way through it though 😉
The power output wasn´t that bad back then. The R31 is one of the best Skylines - especially the hardtop versions! All the features you could have in these back in the day! Yes this generation was more about comfort and luxury but with a sporty note.
Wondering if anybody knows if you have to get an engineers certificate once you add a turbo to the r31 skyline in order to get it registered? Reason i ask is since the VL turbo has the same engine and in Japan some of the r31 skylines were turbo maybe the R 31 is considered already turbo ready and so wouldn’t need an engineers certificate. Not sure if state to state the rules are different but I have a TI series 3 skyline and it’s turbo over her In melbourne and Would like to get it registered one of These days. Wondering if it’s as simple and getting a roadworthy then registering it or it needs to be inspected by engineer first?
have you actually weighed each car? Where'd that number come from. swear my r31 was lighter than 1400 0_o mine wasn't a Ti though. maybe that's the difference.
Kilowatts, lol sounds like they are talking about ac house electrical. Its horsepower or brake horsepower. Its like saying my car makes 240 volts look, how about yours.
