This was always my favourite looking pickup. Great job!

My '94 Dakota has the Dodge wiring gremlins as well, and I have spent $700 dollars trying to make it run right. No more. I am rounding up all the known parts needed to put a carbureted 5.2 magnum in it. Manifold, vacuum distributor and a fuel pressure regulator among other things. Will be fun to drive a smooth 318 with a 5 speed stick and 3.55 gears. Thanks for your video!

What dizzy and carb did you choose? Just picked up my 4x4 5speed 318 that I’m going to turn into a SHTF/haul truck. Want it carbed so it’s reliable and don’t have to worry about possible emp frying it. (Definitely a bit of fear mongering, but better to be prepared than not)

That's badass dude. I'll have to keep this in mind if I ever want to do something like this on my 2nd gen.

Love it, man! Im actually doing this to a 1997 Ram Pickup with a bunch of other suspension mods and goodies with a perfect body and interior Im future proofing. It will have some pep in its step though since its got a 5 speed and is getting a performance intake manifold, 600cfm carb, headers, some head work, and already has the block work done to the 318 magnum. Trimming the wire harness down some so I can still use the computer for gauges and some data with what sensors are left, just enough to help with tuning and diagnostics. You best believe Im going to document the journey on my channel.

So how would I go about converting the 360 magnum to carburetor because the la and magnum are different
@hilljackzack7284
@hilljackzack7284 3 года назад
So basically we got a 1980’s LA intake manifold and lined up the intake ports with the magnum heads and we drilled bold holes into the heads to bold our intake manifold down. We’re building a 360 for this same truck now since we didn’t spend enough time on the 318 it turned out to be gutless and we think it was really only running on 6 cylinders. Also if your doing this swap a 727 trans is a must since the rfe transmissions are all pcm controlled.
@TheJohnwall12
@TheJohnwall12 3 года назад
@@hilljackzack7284 yeah that’s what I planned on doing because they are the same tranny except one has a computer the other doesn’t I can’t stand all the electronic crap on the truck so I was gonna rip it all out
@scottcroney1703
@scottcroney1703 2 года назад
How can I carb swap one of these and keep it clean and organized? I'm kinda a perfectionist myself lol. I wanna still be able to keep the tach and everything working on the dash. But I wanna get rid of that fuel injection system.
@hilljackzack7284
@hilljackzack7284 2 года назад
Do you want the short answer or the long answer? The short answer is just don’t. The truck you want is imaginary or you need a classic. The long answer is you’ll have every light on on the dash but keep the pcm for the cab and dash gauges. You’ll pretty much need to keep all the other electronics except for the current fuel system itself which will have to be remade entirely. This truck is a work truck for a hillbilly I know and didn’t really need the fancy ass gauges due to him being an experienced mechanic. Oh also you’ll have to 727 trans (if not then manual) swap so that you have a fully mechanical transmission for your now fully mechanical engine.

You are in luck. Im going to be doing a video on just what you are looking for. Doing it super clean and even including a fuel system and electrical simplification how to. Best part is Im doing it on the every man's budget, so it's something a regular working Joe or Jack, can take a crack at. Trying to keep the whole job at around $1200 bucks out the door.
@volatile2805
@volatile2805 Год назад
Now the best part about the way Im doing it is I found a way to leave the majority of the sensors on the engine intact yet are not required. They will just be there for data logging and so you can read the data with a scanner, like the tps, temp, alternator output, oil pressure, rpm, o2 sensors, etc. This way the gauges in dash all work but also you can view your temp, o2, ignition timing, MAP sensor (vacuum) and ASD status. Mainly the o2 sensor readouts will be useful for carb tuning and carb diagnostics. Also since the ECU wont be doing injection or ignition management anymore, it will never fail since those are the only parts of the ecu that tend to die and even if the ecu dies, the truck still runs no problem just the gauges get the derp. Also, no more feeds for warning lights other than oil pressure and charge so no worries of your dash looking like a christmas tree. Im an ASE Master Tech and Ford Super Duty Specialist by trade but I love my old Mopars.

There are aftermarket carbureted intakes for the magnum. Guessing you drilled the bolt holes? The 80's L.A. intake has a different bolt pattern and the ports are different. Probably lose power and run like crap. Plus the auto trans won't work right without a controller. The in tank fuel pump has way too much pressure for the carb unless you use a regulator and return line.

I'm doing that conversion and i started it from the Chrysler distributor hooking a Hei module externally but it doesn't run well. Can it be mandatory to change the distributor to a GM style?

I think he ended up switching to a Chrysler one again but it was from like the 70’s that he got at a swap meet.

I have a few shorts but nothing quite like this one. Even then the truck itself and the guy that owns it aren’t around here anymore, he sold the truck to another guy and moved out to Washington state. Also we didn’t document this as good as I wished so I can only go based off memory and this video. We went through 10 cases of beer just to get this together and spent an entire spring and summer of late nights on this. It was a nightmare to say the least.

Is that stock trans an did u get it we're it driving right? I didn't think those trans would shift unless computer told it to also curious how y'all are running a coolant temp an gauge
@hilljackzack7284
@hilljackzack7284 Год назад
The trans is a 727 out of a 1st Gen and the tcase to the 2nd Gen bolts right up no issue. And the coolant temp is just a guesstimate really. I would also suggest running the LA heads as well if your doing the same build. And yes this thing gets up to about 70 on the highway which is the fastest he drives it anyways.

@@hilljackzack7284 why la heads aren't they oiled different cause I have considered that but haven't really studied the oiling of them but I know they r cheaper to get an seems like every magnum engine I get almost has cracked heads but I am doing sorda same build I got a 5.9 an a 5.2 5.9 with a comp extreme energy cam an is carb ax15 trans an I'm considering running la acceries an lift pump

@@k.d.8924 we used the 80’s la manifold and while the air holes match perfectly the bolts don’t so we drilled holes into the heads and threaded them with a tap n dye kit and now it bolts right in.
