We pulled a 5.2L multiport fuel injected motor from a 1995 Dodge Dakota for our 1989 Dodge Dakota. The catch? We want to convert if from an EFI 5.2 to a simpler carbureted 318 style engine before it goes in. Today we start to tear down the front of the engine and take some oven cleaner and a power washer to it to remove 25 years of collected mother earth gaia and liquefied dinosaurs

I buy the dollar store oven cleaner, a buck a can. The cheaper it is then the better it works. The no fumes formula is weaker. I use the stuff to clean the inside of the engine blocks and heads. Got a whole series of vids on it.

I used the purple stuff worked just fine. I dont know why I pulled a motor out a 4x4 the mudd was thick. My truck was gonna be a junkyard build but kept finding good deal for parts on craigslist and Facebook. My pump was trashed so got a reman one. The cam bearing no good found a purple cam and m1 with all the works for $500 was gonna reuse heads but just got new ones just cuz I need to replace springs for cam hopefully it comes in Thursday then motor to the machine shop. I already spent more money on the motor then I paid for the truck I'm trying to do the RU-vid thing just as not as motivated as I want to be. Loving the swap man you're keeping motivated to finish my build. Cant wait til you pull the v6 out

Easy outs are not easy, nor do they take out broken bolts! For me they did exactly what yours did, break in the bolt making your life harder! Mine was a exhaust manifold bolt so I had to be careful when I drilled out the easy out and not go full gorilla! I felt your pain!

Easiest way to clean an old engine is to put it in back of pickup and drive it through a car wash! At 16:36 it starts looking like an actual engine! Keep up the good work!

Ditch the Colman tank and get map gas instead !! A good presoak of WD before removing any more bolts and will hold the moisture back . Don't forget the free sports have to come out and replaced with brass ones before painting the block .

@@DEInTheGarage I got mine at AutoZone for free by trading in a few car batteries for a core and they gave me a debit card , $10 each one and it was only $12 bucks for the mapp gas so I had $30 total on the card. And @Dan H . One was a optimum battery 😂 aka junk !!

Some brake fluid is great for breaking up rust. I usually save the old fluid from doing brakes.

Doug, congratulations on the efforts. Best to heat up the exhaust manifold bolts to cherry red, and remove using a 6 point socket. If they shear, slide off the manifolds and use torch to heat up the bolts again, don't cool the bolts with WD40 or penitrating oil, just twist them out using vise grips. I've been there..

Yea buddy. As soon as this video was done I sprayed all the exhaust and intake bolts down and am going to hit them every night until I get around to breaking them off. Thanks for the tips

@@DEInTheGarage Oh, btw after removing the Intake, are you planning on removing the cam? If so, I highly recommend you holding onto the lifter guides for the roller lifters. They are not available anywhere, they've been obsolete for some years now. No aftermarkets available.

Try using super clean 8 bucks from walmart in a gallon and u can dilute it. Works great. Cant wait,to see the build start

I use castral super clean. Not purple power or the others on a motor I’m going to paint. Castral doesn’t leave any film behind. The paint goes on much nicer without having to use so much wax and grease remover. Make sure not to get it on polished or bare aluminum. Oh and if your going to dump the AC either moroso or transdapt 318 brackets should save you quite a bit of room on the front of the motor by pushing the alternator out from the block and back. As apposed to stacked on the front of the motor. Since your cutting the harness new maybe longer wires won’t be an issue. Also what are you doing for a distributor after all the controls are gone. Good project love the videos have fun.

I also use the purple stuff, to help with the scrubbing I use an old toothbrush and an old shower back scrubbier (looks like a big toothbrush). The best extractor I have ever used look like a tapered square. Keep up the great work and I feel you about the wife wanting yard work done have been tilling our backyard getting ready for sod and trying to work on the ZJ truck.

Doug, you really oughta bite the bullet and get yourself a cordless nut rattler. The percussive blows delivered by an impact wrench are great at breaking up the rust and corrosion, and it applies a straight twisting force (no side loading of the fastner) and is therefore much less likely to shear bolts/studs. You can get a Ryobi unit new with battery and charger for around $130 from The Hodiepo. I bought one when I was working as an RV Tech and have found it to be pretty darn good. Rated for 300 ft-lbs, but it will actually do a bit more, and I don't know of any fastener on a passenger vehicle that needs even close to that.

@@DEInTheGarage LoL, think of it like a health insurance plan specifically for your knuckles and sanity. It will easily pay for itself within the first few uses. Carry it, a charged battery, and a 19mm (also an 18mm if some of those razza-frazzin' lugnut beauty caps have come off) in the Jeep at all times, and you'll never have to worry about not being able to break the lug nuts loose should you need to swap on your spare. Not to mention it will get you off the shoulder of the interstate a lot quicker than the O.E. lug "wrench".

I would go with a older set of pulleys and brackets off a old 318 to clean up the front.

I have this question as well. It is on my to-do list to research it. Uncle Tony's Garage seems to have used old style brackets on the 5.9 he just built and converted to carb

Only suggestion for cleaning years of neglect is a firm brush and some elbow grease. But you're doing an awesome job.

Cool. I’ve always wondered if you could do this to a modern engine. It would really cool to have like a new old engine if you get my meaning. It would also have less things to go wrong (if done right) You’d have to make some proper modifications though

I think this project is dead but I get what you mean. The big American V8’s are still backwards compatible to their ancient origins before electronics got in the way. The 5.7 Hemi, 6.0 LS, and 5.0 Coyote can be converted back to a carburetor and distributor. It just takes a lot of knowledge how to make it work and fabricate the missing pieces. I want to do this to a brand new Ram 1500 5.7 someday as my “forever” truck. It would still be able to get good fuel economy and pass emissions if you tune it right. I would love to have a 6 speed manual and dashboard full of analogue gauges.

@@foggler I’m not entirely sure either. I think you can leave the injectors in the block disconnected. Everything else will need to be custom.

I admit that I did consider the implications of Hemi Orange in a Blue truck, but I was leaning towards Mopar Blue....the possibility of naming the truck Ditka may have just pushed me over the edge in favor of Orange.

I'd soak it down with DAWN & TYPHOON IT AGAIN. Easy outs, " MY ASS " ANYTHING BUTT. Those exhaust manifold bolts SCREAM F U I'M BREAKING OFF. Soak those bad boys for at least a week & tap with a hammer every so often. I use Acetone & ATF for soaking bolts & nuts to be removed, 50/50 mix in a spray bottle. YES, You got it, different types of metal cause corrosion & BOOM PROBLEM. I use so much Anti Seize anymore it's not funny even on my lug nuts.
