♨ Carbon Monoxide 🌫💀 Back Drafting💨 at water heater
• ♨ Carbon Monoxide 🌫💀 B...
Back in the 1940"s & 50"s home owners could not afford air conditioning so they would install vent grates in the basement on the cold air return of the furnace. During the hot summers they could turn on a auxiliary switch for the blower only and it would draw the cool damp air into the cold air return forcing it out to the upstairs areas. However, not realizing that having a water heater installed next to it can steal the fresh makeup air that the water heater needs at the flame shield area below and the draft hood area above. If the cold air return and blower are in function while the water heater turns on that can improperly pull the byproduct exhaust gas out of the water heater draft hood and/or flame shield distributing carbon monoxide in that direct area or throughout the house. This method can still be used today to achieve cool air in your house as long as the vent grate is not by the water heater.

So what is the fix for this type of situation 90% efficiency furnace with central A/c?

@@davidbleigh4646 Simply cap off the vent with sheet metal. There's other cold air vents throughout the house. No real need to have one in the unfinished basement. Thanks for the question and for watching.

Thanks. I tried a window and the only cold air return. The draft improved but was still blowing out while the a/c was blowing. It appears there are 2 chimneys in the basement one is sealed off near the new 90% unit. The hot water tank is sealed about 8 foot away on the other stack. The rings on top of the tank are slightly melted. And I checked through the old service metal door on the bottom of the stack. It is still blowing down. I suppose the next step is to check the roof access

@@davidbleigh4646 Ok. Now from that description it sounds like your water heater was not converted to a "B- vent liner" when the furnace was removed from the chimney. The old original chimney liner cannot draft the water heater out properly. A B- vent liner helps assist the drafting up the chimney. Look up B- vent liners. I hope this helps. I hope this helps.

1 WEEK AGO- my basement starting getting COLD drafts. As in I went from wearing a shirt, to 2 sweaters PLUS a winter hat. I can feel the breeze. Even upstairs main level - -- I feel some cold breeze. BUT....my heat is working! There's warm air coming from vents. I've felt every vent in the house - NO cold air from there. I do hear a 'thud' once in awhile I assume it's from furnace. Based on these clues - is it possible the furnace or HVAC is responsible for this sudden cold-ness in my house? BUT if so - and cold air isn't coming from vents ---where the heck could it be coming from? Appreciate any opinions...maybe it's not furnace and it's something else but this is weird, just started a week ago.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I get a lot of strange questions about homes and they can be tricky to figure out. So here is some info that may help. 1st: temperature can't be seen and people remember that heat "rises" to the highest point in the home but they forget that cold air "falls" down to the lowest point. (Basement/crawl) "Thermal Imaging" can be done to physically see the source of where the cool air is coming from. You can find someone locally to hire that has that equipment. Such as an insulation company or a private home inspector. 2nd: To me it sounds like if it came on suddenly then something may have been changed or altered. Example: Attic hatch cover left open, window left open on any level, basement with a crawl space that has cross vents that are not closed up for winter. I hope some of this information helps. Good luck and thanks for the question and for watching the video.

Can a cold air return be installed if the gas water heater is in the complete opposite direction? can that still cause backdraft?

Thanks for watching the video and sorry it took so long to respond. If the water heater is installed on the other side of this furnace, it would be more least likely to cause the back drafting because of the large open basement. However, the rule of thumb is to not have a cold air return in the same room/area as the water heater draft hood. Cold air return vents have also been known to blow out pilots on water heaters and you may also notice that cold air vents are not installed in kitchen areas because of the same reason. Hope this helps. Thanks again for watch.
