Here I talk about possible causes of backdrafting and the signs you can look for to see if you have a backdrafting issue in your home via water heaters or HVAC systems. Backdrafting is the reverse flow of gas in the flues of fuel-fired appliances that results in the intrusion of combustion byproducts into the living space. This is a serious issue as it could cause harm or death to the occupants via carbon monoxide poisoning.

You are spot on in your diagnosis. The flue being too close to the roof probably isn’t harming this unit I realize it’s not code. We always line the chimney with a 4” liner when pulling out an 80% furnace and installing a 90%. The return needs to be blocked off and the furnace should have the air intake put to the outside.

If a venting flue is installed to go up and through the roof, it will always be 'too close' to the roof. Also, isn't this guy in the basement of the home he's looking at in this vid?

there should be enough makeup air in that size room. I'd take out that return duct at the bottom though for sure.

I think the main issue is the immediate near-90 and then that long 3 inch horizontal run. Not nearly enough vertical there right off the top. There should be enough makeup air in that size room to accommodate although that return duct at the bottom of the stack isn't helping that situation either.

Major one is the size of the exhaust venting. Those flies need to be appropriately sized to the appliance and 4” into that much larger flue can cause issues of no draft especially when cold out

I too am trying to learn why my water heater is back drafting. And thus, my question. In my mind a new furnace replacement should not cause the existing pipe to be too big as 6 months of the year the water heater only is using that pipe. Is it a cold pipe that does not draw in the winter?

I dont recommend 90 degree elbows straight off the top of the hood vent , maybe a 45 but not 90 unless you have some kind of fan sucking the exhaust out . Second i know they say 1 inch of rise for every foot of distance but i recommend way more rise on that 3 inch pipe .

So, it's not definitive that the water heater flue setup is causing the backdraft, correct? You mentioned it could actually be a couple of other things related to the furnace setup.

Oh GOSH really!!? Oh I'm glad I'm trying to learn!... thanks you are a STAR! (I'd entirely missed yr menttion that the hot water heater was a natural gas appliance. (I'm used to electric hot water heaters.) Was the carbon monoxide alarm going off :o (or did you just notice the water? leak above the 2 melted seals, the seals - which alerted you that there would be a carbon monoxide leak and confirmed what you thought, after you saw the outside 1 ft exhaust, too short, roof exhaust pipe? And esp that the exhaust pipe was now too large to successfully eliminate gases after the furnace was replaced.) So the furnace and previous one are/have been running off natural gas also I yake it right?) Gosh! Seriously well done that you spied 4 things that could lead to a major dangerous potential outcome!

I put the responsibility of this on the furnace replacement they should be held accountable for the fact that the flue pipe after the furnace has been changed is now inadequate for the appliances going into the chimney

It was working fine until the Hvac unit was changed. Pipe that make up air outside and or change that water heater to an electric one. Cover that return register. Turn the unit off and see if the direction of the air in the hood changes first off.
