Star rods S7000 teardown and review comparing it to the Penn 704Z
Looking for a new surf reel or general duty saltwater reel?
I don't think I've ever owned a fishing reel at this price point that left such a bad taste in my mouth so quickly.
With the Spheros, Slammer III, Clash, Spinfisher, Daiwa BG,
Finor Offshore, Being readily available. The is no reason to sacrifice this much performance.
Do keep in mind though. I am just one person who fishes a certain way. Guys fishing mono or heavy fireline may not have issues and may like the way their reel performs.

Penn 704z re released: amzn.to/2icaCuK
A list of awesome gear that I have used, enjoyed and have faith in.

Keep in mind guys. Watch this video from Zeno. This reel's street price is in the same tier. And the Penn Z in this video can be fished in the same manner as well. Which is what made it so special. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GAtKpIy-5ns.html

Tackle Advisors so if this reels gear ratio is a 3:7.1 does that mean that it's supposed to be faster then a 704z or 706z if it's the S8000?

I don't think anyone is going to flame you for this video here. This is why I subscribed to you. Break them down and show why they suck or are reliable. In todays market this is useful. My old fishing gear is the most reliable stuff i have. My son learned to fish starting off on a 40 year old zebco reel. still works great to this day, new zebco reels might not last a day however I have one thats 40 years old and is great. He then graduated to a mitchell 300, mine are 50 years old! They work great new mitchell 300 are garbage.. In the past you could buy middle grade equipment that was reliable. It wasn't the best but it was reliable and got the job done. Half a century later they are still in service. Everything these days is designed to be disposable but yet we have all types of business trying to be "green" yeah right
@aarondavis8224
@aarondavis8224 7 лет назад
Also Penn is the reliable budget gear, it isn't the best but go on a big charter boat all their reels are Penn.. Cheap, reliable and can be repaired.. Theres much better out there but for a budget fisherman it gets the job done

My concern is lawyers. I can take comment flamers. I'm an admin at stripersonline.com which is the largest fishing website on the planet. I deal with stuff like that all the time. It's fun :) The one thing i left out which is purely speculation. These china import reels rarely if ever supply parts. The Z has had parts (and all classic penns) for decades. When you need a line roller or bail wire. How long are parts going to be available for. Often parts for these reels come in the form of fully assembled reels. So if the don't sell well and star doesn't order or have any more built. What happens then??? Stainless, bakelite, bronze= PENN tanks :) Too bad their < 150$ spinners all suck.

My god I love your videos! Your tear down of reels to the bone plus sarcastic humor is why you are imo the most reliable source for reel reviews. I bet star left that reel with a big hole just so that they make more money from guys having to constantly buy new ones after their other ones break. Thank you for an honest review and you are nowhere in the wrong for reacting that way.

My Star S7000 just broke last night where the foot comes up and forks, poor metal casting grain structure consistency from a metallurgic standpoint was the ultimate cause. Liked my S7000 but had many of the discussed issues in this video, time to move on to better equipment.

Man your vids are awesome. No one else out there produces content to this degree of detail and informativeness. I'm not a surf fisherman myself but I do some light inshore fishing from time to time. I'm partial to baitcasting gear and am planning to take my curado 70 out to target mangrove jacks in the estuary this winter. What would you suggest that I should do to my reel before and after fishing trips to prevent issues with saltwater from occurring? Any product recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I did buy this reel and grease packed it. I found that the grease pushes out the gap sealing the reel I will let you know how it works this season.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 4 года назад
Here's what you have to watch out for.....since it incorporates a one way clutch bearing......you can't let the grease get up into it....This is a problem when packing all mondern reels....and why the Penn z was able to function as it used a dog ar. Best of luck....they were selling at the shows this past spring for 40$

Thanks mark. I expect to get quite a bit of push back. Whether it be from people given the reels to test, or just people that don't know what the z was all about. Or from just people that may have received a better model. These reviews take a ton of time. Makes no sense to BS after 499 takes and 50 hours...lol

I'm mostly a freshwater guy being in North Alabama, but love your channel, your to the point and honest. I just ordered the Lews Mach Crush combo primarily because the 20 lbs. of drag, helps with catfish, the external lube port, wish more reels had that, and the double-shielded bearings, figured I could use it lightly when inshore down at the gulf. Not sure if the model is a big deal in the spinning version, got an older Shimano 2000fd I use that I still love. Quick-Fire trigger spoils me.

Miniature bearings don't cost much, but when you bearing gets wet with salt water let it rust grease the outside and use it like a bush. It might work.

It almost looks like a lot of the Star components may be existing parts of other reels retrofitted to fit this housing. This happens a lot more than you think. It saves a lot of money in designing and set up procedures. Im actually shipping out a custom rod tomorrow built for a Star reel similar to this one but in a green and yellow camo pattern. He ordered the rod with massive guides (customer is always right) that may very well add to the casting problems. What size stripper guide was on the rod used for testing? BTW....you probably have the most unbiased, and most knowledgeable rod/reel review videos on the internet.

I think you could have a great niche on youtube by rating reels while breaking them down. Start making a personal rating system. For example, a rating of 1-10 in different categories 1)reliability/ quality 2) performance 3) Value (especially value because i feel your perspective is very fair) 4) so on and so forth. You can really help people make informed decisions and save us money plus head aches! Knowing how to spend for example a $100.00 on a new spinning reel would be very helpful. With your arsenal of reels and rods you could start making recaps of each one to produce a lot of useful content and link your previous videos that feature these items else where on your channel. I'm sure there will be viewers that will send reels into you(as i have seen already) for breakdowns as well for material for you to rate as well. Creating a playlist of these specific videos would be easy to share and digest by new viewers. Sorry for the long post, i hope for the best with your channel. Tight lines!
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
Thanks Joe. Don't be sorry :) the long winded ones are the ones that deserve the most respect!! I remember when tackle tour started with a rating system. And i've seen others do that. Unfortunately. 90% of whats out there would rate as a 7. And that can be misleading. This reel if you took Gears and rated them a 9 (old torque spinner 9.5) Simplicity 8 (penn z 9.5 shimano stradic 5) Price 7 (daiwa bg 9.5) etc.....Those numbers even with 5 other general categories would be misleading. Know what I mean. (And where did i get the numbers from :) That's why I do the side by side thing. People are going to buy what they want to buy. Often no matter what the number rating is. And since every reel is a mass produced widget designed for profit. Each sample may be different. So as always your mileage may vary. Are you familiar with Alan Hawk? He and I in the past used to constantly go back and forth (in a good way) to bring out more in each of the reviews either of us did. I really wish he would turn to youtube. That's also why these reviews take so long. I'm not taking a reel apart and doing a voice over. I'm talking while screwing and unscrewing and trying to get everything in focus and in frame......I swear The "hey whats going on guys.......bla bla bla" and the 60 seconds after that. Take 300 takes....lmao.....My voice is shot by the end of the day.

Thank you for the reply, In my heart i knew this was the answer but i had to see if maybe i might hear something else. From my moderate experience (32 years old) most of my options work for me (inshore fishing Louisiana)such as Shimano, Penn, and Daiwa. The perfectionist in me wants to pick at everything, to micro manage my tackle, and figure out what is the most enjoyable bang for my buck. Keep doing what you do please because your work satisfies some of my tackle junky itch. Tight lines!

@supremekarate1
@supremekarate1 6 лет назад
Just and FYI: I know a number of surfcaster's who have the Tsunami Shield 6000 and one common problem they are all having is the bail system. After a while the bail does not close? This reel has a automatic bail but eventually the bail will not close when you crank the reel? you have to use it as a manual bail system, where you have to manually flip the bail closed in order to retrieve your line. I guess this is not a major concern? usually it's the opposite situation that's a problem. If the bail prematurely closes on you during a cast, resulting in a snap off (losing a plug). You won't lose a plug with this reel but it wasn't meant to work this way either? Just thought you should know since you are going to tear down this reel and review it. Look at the bail system. You have great videos and done a great service to fishermen by sharing your thoughts on all this gear. Thank you,

No hate from me but I am a Penn guy but only vintage Penns. I’m retired and took up collecting and restoring vintage surf spinning reels. I’ve been into it for a little over a year now and have around 50 reels in my collection. I’ve learned a lot about reel design, materials, and construction. You are so correct about this Star reel. It is junk. Almost all my vintage surf reels are far better! I have my original Penn Zs as well as the different styles of 704s and 700 Greenies. They are all better than this Star. Your analysis was spot on. Thank you for speaking honestly. You probably saved a lot of folks from making an expensive mistake! Even though I don’t use modern surf reels I love your RU-vid channel. You are very intelligent and insightful.

Sure return the reel lol... In all seriousness you need to add the o rings and cast with the spool at the top of the oscillation cycle. That may help. But I had the same problem and have owned a bunch of Zeebaas dual pickup and vs reels

A friend of mine at shimano told me the best way to lose a million dollars is to invest a million dollars in the fishing industry :) I have tons of designs for new lever drag funtion, to drag designs and spool interactions to pinions plus the use of silicons and electro magnetism... All of it is worthless without money for design and 10x $$$ to market it :)

I was going to. But I haven't put any real time on the nasci. Additionally. Alan Hawk's review. Left nothing out. Right now the US market bg is the best 100$ saltwater spinner on the market. Unfortunately it ate quite a bit into the Saltist sales as I don't think people saw Mag seal, CRBBs, and smooth bail wire transition a worth while 100$ price jump. Beware overseas market bg's They aren't the same reel. In the US it would be a step down. Hex keyed handle shaft vs thread in is a big difference.

I own a 704Z and used Berkley 15LB test Green Big Game on the reel and the reel spooled mono evenly with a manual bail. I tried to spool the reel with 20 LB Fuse and the line lay was uneven and left a large gap under top lip of the spool. I stopped using mono and don't fish with the 704Z anymore and started using fuse & brad line on more up to datespinning reels that are braid ready.The Penn 704 & 706Z Reels are antiquated dinosaurs and Penn reissued the 704 & 706 reels, but failed to upgrade there design for todays modern day fishing line, they could have at least put some vent holes on the rotor and added an AR clutch, it makes no sense that Penn reissued these reels without improving them..The bottom line is that the Penn 704 & 706Z reels are heavy old clunkers made for people who have the need for a nostalgic connection to a USA product made in the past, and we'd all be better off using the 704 & 706Z's as door stops rather than for fishing !! The Morel Of This Story Is The Penn 704 & 706Z Reissue Is An Antiquated Reel,And The Star Rods S7000 Reel Is Junk !!!! And You Can't Polish A Turd !!!!!!
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
The thing about the z...it's the closest thing to a van stall that you can get...Just shovel grease in the body put the sideplate back on and squeeze the grease out.....No instant antirverse clutch to worry about getting grease on.....and you can swim with it. An s shaped traverse block would have been a nice addition for sure....but 14-lb test fireline and up while it doesn' t look pretty performs great. That's why they reissued it....lots of surf casters demanded it....(but they brought the price up to 200$ which is near double what it sold for new 10 years ago...it' s not a nastalgia reel ....it's a bullet proof budget reel (buy it used for under 100) for serious surf casters who don't want to be left stuck with a dead reel...not my cup of tea...but I get it. But yeah the start is junk...I gave it to my friend who loaned me the z for this video...he sold it and ended up giving me the 100 bucks lmao
@franktheo2055
@franktheo2055 6 лет назад
Yep, I agree both the 704 & 706 Penn reels are work horses and you can't kill them because they have those brass gears inside them and have a very simplistic design, and are easily maintained. Penn should have made some cuts on the rotor to vent out the sand like the VS it's not the water that will mess you up on the surf, but when sand gets inside the rotor it'll jam up. I own an old model 1999 VS 200 with the same drag shoe setup as the 704 Penn and I have a 2000 model 150 VS with the sealed drag & the counter wait is inside the rotor, the problem with the older model VS's that I own is when you spool them with line they cone like an hour glass. I stopped using my VS reels around 2011 because I had multiple issues with Zebco repair I always kept my VS's in warranty, and when ever something went wrong with ether of them where I had to sent one back they'd hold the reel hostage for a month and asked me for a large sum of cash, where I had to show them proof of warranty and tell them to send me back my reel and to back there bleeping warranty ! Anyway, I bought the Sargus 5000, than two Conquers 5000 & 7000, the V5000, Battle one 6000, Conflict 5000 & 6000 and one Clash 5000 & recently I won two separate bids for two CFTII5000 reels, why Penn you may ask ? Because I'm Crazy !!! No, because Zebco pissed me off enough to go back and buy and fish with Penn reels. Penn reels are relatively inexpensive and are easy to repair, & after Zebco bought out VS there customer service has never been the same. I've been following you on SOL & I've found your factual none biased study and reel product break downs on RU-vid very helpful especially when it comes down to deciding what new cost effective quality spinning reel to buy, and your tutorials are very helpful not just to me, but to someone new to surf fishing. I see you're a big fan of Daiwa spinning reels and I've read a lot of great reviews for the Daiwa BG it looks like a good a maintainable reel for the buck.. FYI, that Star Reel resembles Whistlers Mother's Singer Sewing Machine ! LOL !

Very very nice review, pleasure to see. You can test brass and stainless steel gearing with file and I sure it will be good quality. Thanks. Maybe red background a bit strange for focus.

Tough to try and replicate a classic but they sure did a lousy job of it. I've got a couple of the Penn Z reels. One for use and one sitting next to a Penn Senator 1/0 (yes 1/0). Awesome reels for crappy weather, big surf, going for a swim, etc. Load that bad boy up with corrosion x before you go and remove it when you're home. Classic.

As a Penn reel nerd/repair guy, myself, the exposed pinion is completely DISHONEST. The prices of reels has proportionately gone out of control because people are willing to overpay for them. That creates sub-premium markets for the economy lines to fill. But for a Mfg Co to remake a 704z with a FATAL FLAW by DESIGN, is unforgiveable. The reel should be named, "Sham S7000." Manufacturers know the average customer will not "get it" about the exposed pinion, but WILL bite on the ball bearings and unlimited anti-reverse... to capture your $200 cash. F'ing disgusting form of greed and is rightfully exposed. The engineers who said "yes" to this intentional flaww were paid well, by you, the customer. And they knew we would. (Until now?). Good work TA. BTW, I think the line roller is further from the other in order to create better balance as the rotor beats around. PS the main gear looks to be of that aluminum/brass you commonly now see in garden hose nozzles--just gold enough to look like brass, just cheap enough because it's more like aluminum, and far more corrodable. This real is a one night stand who's proposing marriage at full price. (I used to repair reels for a tackle shop since I'm 14.). I'd buy reels with no clear intention of fishing with them--I just thought good ones were marvelous. Still do.

Funny thing about this reel and its pricing.. I worked a booth this spring at the big surf caster show... The shop was blowing these out for 40-50$...I'd share my experiences etc... I think we sold 4 out of the 20 at 40$...not a bad boat and mono reel... That's about the only use I felt comfortable recommending it for...lol..I was also contacted by the new star rep a year after this video came out... He thanked me for pointing out the flaws and offered anything they make at no charge as a thank you... I passed on the offer.

Great video as always. Which sub $110 reel would you recommend? I am interested in starting surf fishing. I was looking at the tsunami shield.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
Thanks Rtuite. I started a thread on SOL about the Tsunami shield asking for some user feedback. It wasn't all that great. The United States version of the daiwa BG right now is the best 100$ reel for the surf. There aren't any seals. But it will hold up to the fish your after. The 4k will handle the majority of plugging applications. ANd hold a perfect amount of 30 and 40lb braid. My suggestion if you want some level of sealing. The street price on the penn spinfisher is about where you looking. Grab a US market shimano Spheros if you can stretch your budget. That's the best Lower/ Mid level priced saltwater spinner out at the moment. ((((( I bring up US market because overseas/ japanese market versions are of lower quality/ offer less in terms of features)))) BG amzn.to/2iQgKwY Spheros amzn.to/2z0t3uD

Thanks man! No problem. Friend of mine beat the snot out of his bg. I thought for sure it wouldn't last a month....Blew my mind that it finally shit the bed last june. I worked on it last november. And it was it great shape after a few thousand lbs of bass blues. Pulled out of a 3kt current. (anchored in a saltwater river) What surprised me the most was it was the 3500. Which is a size down from the 4k!

Good video here's some information for your viewers I have used Shimano reels for years surf fishing here on the treasure coast of Florida regardless of how well I clean and rinse the reels there is always a failure after a couple years normally a bearing or bail failure, I just send the reel back to the service department in Ca they call me within 2 weeks and charge me $ 25 then they never fix it they just send me a new reel. I tried several times to take apart my reels but got confused or my hands at my age don't work with tiny screws so I have sent back the reel and parts in a baggy with a note saying that it was my fault they just charge me $ 25 for service and send me a new reel sometimes an upgrade only Shimano for me.
@riccardocarbo2479
@riccardocarbo2479 4 года назад
They DARED to invoke the embarrassment... and got it! A reel like that must cost less than $20 to produce. It's a disposable reel. Remember disposable cameras? Well, that reel is made so cheaply, likewise. Keep in mind, you can go to the hardware store and get a brass faucet costs 7 bucks. And it's water tight. If Penn made a faucet, it'd $99, the SpinFaucet painted, black and gold.

Yeah. When i reassembled it i filled the gap with grease. Sanded down the spool shim a hair. And put the bail back on. WIth a hair more grease on the internals. It actually feels better than when it was new.

What brand and kind of grease and oil do you prefer to use in your reels?
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 7 лет назад
For general purpose Corrosion X grease and Yamalube marine grease. For my fancy reels I've been using kryotox mixed with tungsten disulfide. Oils, I use tsi 321 and corrosion x oil (sometimes mixe with tungsten disulfide) I have them listed here (all but the tsi) www.amazon.com/shop/influencer20170928932

100 bucks and it's yours!! Probably work great with 17lb 20lb mono with the bail on! The lightest drag setting is really light. (I think i mentioned that) many reels don't get that light. Great for live lining from the yak.

Not for nothing.. Penn Z reels have the longest proven track record for harsh environment longevity of any spinning reel made. No other reel comes close. Go to Montauk or block Island.. And they're all over the place landing big fish all the time.. High and dry and underwater

I’ve watched this ten times just for a laugh and all the sudden I thought “but j and h are still selling these things for $18”... I’m not sure if I owned that business I’d still take customers money for this product knowing what it is. There are bad reels out there but this is just disrespectful to market a reel with a hole in it as saltwater.

I'm surprised looks alone didn't steer you away from the Star spinning reel. It would have kept me away. It may well be the ugliest "modern" spinning reel in the last decade. Sorry it turned out to be a leaker as well. Any reel that ugly better be a top performer to have a chance in the marketplace. Given the designed in leaks, I'd say you are under reacting to it.
