I've had the Penn slammer 3 5500 for at least a year and I've used it in the surf it's been banged on rocks, fallen in sand. All I do is wash the reel to remove loose sand and continue to fish. I've never opened the reel for maintenance because it is still as smooth as when I first got it.

I now have two very full seasons of fishing on my Slammers on Jetty, CCC, Surf and Boat: 4500, 5500 and 6500HS. They've been dunked, splashed, soaked, dropped in the sand and on the jetties and with minimal maintenance have had no problems. Perfect. I can't speak for the 'gosa, which I'm sure is a good reel as well, but as for the Slammers, they are butter-smooth tanks. Love the drags as well(I've avoided coffee grounds)

Penn has really stepped up their game over the last few years. I use the Slammer III 4500 for snook fishing where I would usually use a reel at least one size up(4500 etc.) It's the truly waterproof and that amazing drag that sold me; 3500, 4500, 6500 and a 8500. And I used to be a die hard Shimano reel fan too. Also the new Clash series are great Inshore reels. Star Seagis or custom made rods... And I work part time at Bass Pro Shop, Daytona Beach and have many other reels to choose from with my employee discount. BPS brand products, I get a 47% discount on BPS made products. So you know where my paycheck goes lmao!

I have 30 trips over last year from boat and beach on SL3 4500 almost 200 hours. Just a spray rinse after and oiled a couple times. Has been dunked has been sanded. Performs better than new. Definitely do not notice back slap. Also can pickup on Amazon or eBay at $180. or less if you are patient. One of the best value reels I have bought. Great review. Have a saragossa 6000 and 8000, I really am losing faith in penn their reels last a while but they are never buttery like the shimanos, line lay is wackadoodle, and I always get wind knots. I wish shimano put a deeper arbor on the saragossa because it just does not have enough line to back up its beefiness. I’d go with shimano they are just better quality and you dont need to worry about getting a “bad batch” like the penns.

Own both gosa 6000 sw and slammer 3 4500. Gosa hands down for me a much better surf reel. Effortless cranking in big tins and fish. Slammer is smooth under zero load. Cranking in big tin or fish requires much more effort and has a slight coffee grinder thing going on. Gosa upgrades...got rid of the factory egg handle knob and swapped out with sustain 10000 circular Eva knob, saving over an oz..and solves for the odd oem egg knob. Also, swapped out factory grease after first season with corrossion x grease and oil., Slammer pluses...looks better, higher lock down drag, and has great line lay.

Great discussion here, thanks. I got myself that 2500 LL. I really like the reel, overall but I can't get over the spool sitting on such a tiny "shelf" washer on the shaft--as you said, all that pressure has to pile up right there, narrowly. I minor problem I'll say Penn overlooked was the angle of the line roller to the spool of line, particularly when full. It pays off off the spool at an angle wider than the line roller is angled for, so it runs tight against the sharper edge of the roller just before it guides on to it. No likey! That could feasibly fray line or rumple it. My reel lays line biased on the lower part of the spool, even after removing the most shims possible and reeling in tightly. My 2500LL's drag locks DOWN. The only way to take adavantage of that degree of drag would be 60lb braid on a Tuna stick, which means getting spooled after 30 seconds of Blue Fin fury since you haven't the yardage to give it. Impractical as that all seems, it's nice knowing it's there!

I really like my slammer III's. I have 4500, 5500, 6500 and 8500. Drags are just bad ass. Never had any issues with line lay or internal grinding under pressure... And i clean them after every use so sand is never an issue. Goosa's are fine reels as well i just prefer penn...

But none of it is actually relevant. For example, ALL reel designers choose to make a sound emitting from the object. Not once do you reference the sound. The user IS concerned with sound. Feel is also extremely important. Designs can be futuristic. You're Supposed to grow into the product. Clearly you're uneducated and unwise. Nowonder you're antisocial.

It would be really interesting to find out for any of the guys that had the drag knob melt on them during a fight how much drag pressure was applied to the reel at that time...I mentioned this on a few videos that compared reels in the same class both in cost and size...It`s impressive that you can spend $349 on the biggest Penn Slammer and it`s rated for 60 lbs of drag...When the 25000 Saragosa is $409 and is rated for 44 lbs of drag...So most people would most likely go for the Slammer because they`re getting more for their money but how much of that drag pressure is really effective within that 60 lbs?..And how long would it last before it breaking down?....If both reels were put through constant pressure of say 25 lbs of drag the Saragosa could still possibly be a better reel because it would last longer than the Slammer even though Slammer is rated for much higher drag pressure..I believe I brought this up with the Stella vs Dogfight comparison video.
@iamajames

Fin nor offshore 9500 also has 60 lbs drag but at a lower ratio, also much cheaper all can handle tarpon grouper sharks. Seems like a trend to use giant spinning reels to replace conventional gear

I completely agree and in reality a lot of guys and in most cases aren`t even going to use close to 40 lbs of drag on spinning reels. This video however has convinced me to buy the Penn Torque II for my 80 lb class but I can understand why guys would stick with the Slammers since they have the same drag system as the Torque with this exception of the drag knobs.

If I may clarify: At 50:40, you mention the rotor play as being related to the ratio. I'm quite sure that the play comes NOT from the space between the gear teeth (which makes the gear ratio a non-factor) but has all to do with the amount of rotor travel required to actuate enough resistance from the anti-reverse mechanism. So, the handle is not an accomplice. You'd be right about the "six times more play in the rotor than the handle" IF the anti-reverse were under the main gear whereby the rotor's reversal rotation is transfering torque from the pinion to the main gear, THEN you'd get that sort of play, which was true back in the Z-days and lighter SS models of yore. But since the anti-reverse is at the pinion gear, the main-gear-to-handle train bears no guilt in crimes of the un-reel. I appreciate your deep dive with the mechanics/materials. I've been fixing reels since I'm 9 years old and still can't overcome it. Any tips? :)

Maybe I’m lucky but I haven’t had a knock on either my 4500 or 7500 Slammer 3. Personally, I like the feeling of a Penn spinning over Shimano, something about it feels very sturdy where the butter smooth shimano just has no feel at all. People love the smooth feel but I like a little feel.

Interestingly I now own a Saragosa, Slammer III and a Daiwa Saltist. Different sizes slightly but similar.For what it’s worth I’ll be selling the Saltist and Saragosa and purchasing another Slammer III in the 3500 size or 4500 size. I’ve owned a lot of reels in my life and I’ve never been in love with the Penn spinning reels but the Slammer III is the best $250-$280 reel ever made to me. I personally think it’s a better boat reel by a long ways compared to the others. I’m not a surf fisherman so I can’t comment but the Slammer III for my style of fishing is amazing.

Own 2 Penn slammer 3 5500 and been up to my chest with 40lb stripers and the reel taking a swim. No probs ever. no corrosion no anything other than the Penn slammer bail closes a tad stiffer which actually helps in the long run if tossing lures. No premature bail closing breakoffs. Fishing bud actually owns a saragosa 5000 and it fucked up on a nice 35 lb striped bass which burned line and locked the spool up. Also noticed that my friends saragosa had damage on the line roller. Penns drag on the 5500 40lb. Hooked a 110lb white sturgeon by accident and the Penn had problem controlling this beast. Penn indeed has no rotor lean. Had ideas that the Penn might be less than penns old standards but pleasantly have found the Penn is solid as hell. Also have had waves splash the Penn over and over and no raspiness? not sure what happen to this one but mine gets put through hell and has never had a issue.

It really is a very good reel. As is the Gosa. After penn sent me the new spinfishers. I found one that was missing the hydrophobic coating. I asked penn if it should be there and if mine were retail release..and they confirmed it should be there and that they're pre retail......But 2 out of 3 had the coating....I say that because when i had that slammer....I thought I had messed something up...but I've now seen some penns with a barely there coating...and that slammer i think it was as missing as the one I have here. And that will allow water to get into the ar clutch area and kill that pinion support bearing which is what happened. The day it was dunked..all was good.....same with the next day not fishing it..the third day is got noisey... (saltwater) Penn replaced the reel and it is in tip top shape and back in the og owners hands. Quality control....every companies most important aspect..can be penns problem at times....Vids like this go a long way to push them to focus...(I know they are watching me wit the upcoming spinfisher vids i'm shooting...and when I launch the vid this week focusing on one of their november launch reels. They may get a tad nervous...But it's for the benefit of the consumer..And I don't recall in the history of a retail release anyone has done something like this

In the end, it's preference. I have little to no knowledge about saltwater fishing and only get to do it when I'm either in Greece or when the time comes and I'll be able to go to Sweden or Norway (European dude). So, even as a Shimano fan, the next bigger salt-proofish reel I might well get will be the Penn. Feels really comfortable to me looking at the knob too and since I can definitely run into AJs in my favorite area in Greece, that's reason enough to me. Since I lost legit all of them so far. Also, what I was wondering - you talk about your hands being not too big, so how big are they? Mine are about 9in long and not particularly wide and never had issues with big knobs at all.

the truth It’s great bro. Really good. The thing is, if you’re used to catching Spanish mackerel, small yellow jacks, or anything around that size really.. you need to lower the drag alllll the way down or else the reel is overkill. The reel is so strong, when a smaller fish gets on you almost can’t feel it on your line because drag isn’t being budged whatsoever. Definitely a secondary reel for boats/inshore/offshore. If you use it as your primary for Shore/beach, it feels great but it’s overkill to anything that you can catch. I.e. Don’t use a gun to kill a spider when you have a perfectly good shoe you can use

Just for the record, I love your videos man but I got a question. I watched this video a couple times and I noticed that you were talking about the slammer and how far you got it in saltwater and u said it almost got above the spool but for the most part it wasnt dunked much. Is this the same slammer you were using in another video, because I remember one of your reels in your videos had a seal broken on the rotor near the main shaft im not exactly sure of the location where it was at, but dont you think that would compromise the sealing of that reel if it was dunked with a messed up seal? Trying to decide between these reels and a shimano spheros for a surf shark fishing trip soon. I guess my question is if you used that slammer with a broken seal during testing and if you believe an unbroken seal would've greatly improved the slammer's sealing. Thanks for what you do for the community. Team Shimano!
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 6 лет назад
Yup same reel same torn o ring under the rotor nut.. And on top of that.. I thought I messed up the hydrophobic seal. Which I recently found wasn't applied correctly and almost completely absent. (it's missing on one of the new Penns they sent me) which got me thinkin that there wasn't an obvious coating there on the slammer 3. The top bearing failed on that slammer and was replaced. Just last week the owner of this slammer told me that the latest replacement was the worst of the now 3 replacement reels...

Hi, I'm choosing reel for inshore spinning and rock fishing. Most of the time will be working with around up to 2oz stickbaits and jigs. Currently considering shimano saragosa 5000sw and biomaster 5000sw. What would you suggest ovee those two reels? I know biomaster is alot lighter but is it as rigid as saragosa?
@vjabonador1067
@vjabonador1067 6 лет назад
For a budget popping setup used for GTs, Dogtooth tuna or Kingfish either offshore or from the rocks, which one would be better, a Saragosa 20k or a Slammer 3 8500HS? The Penn has better drag (on paper), a bit lighter, a higher line capacity, a faster line retrieve and is a bit cheaper (though I can find deals online for the Saragosa 20k at $250-300 if I look around a bit). The main issue that I know with Penn reels is that they're generally too heavy for working a popper or stickbait all day (aside from the Torque), but the 8500hs seems a good compromise without going full Stella or Saltiga. Since the Saragosa 20k (or the old 18k) is generally considered the minimum for GT popping (weight-wise, drag-wise, capacity-wise and reliability-wise), I wonder if the Slammer 3 8500HS can do it a little bit better? I'm saving for a decent, not top-of-the-line popping setup for GTs here in the Philippines (we don't really have a lot of 30-50++ kg monsters you'd see in Oman or Australia, more like 10-25 kg, but there are some), and my local tackle dealer stocks more Penn stuff than Daiwa or Shimano. I'd most likely have to order online for the Saragosa if I do go for one. What would you recommend? I'll also be using the reel for offshore jigging.

@vjabonador1067
@vjabonador1067 5 лет назад
@@baku7478 As far as I know there's no problem with either method. There are good jigging spots off the coast of the town of Oton with plenty of trevally (mamsa/talakitok) and grouper (lapu-lapu). Trolling usually gets you spanish mackerel (tangigue), trevally and tuna from what I've heard. My personal recommendation though is to fish in the neighboring provinces of Guimaras or Antique, they have cleaner waters and the fish are less wary. You might even find dorado/dolphin fish/mahi-mahi offshore.

First of all, great, in-depth video comparison! Yesterday I was talking with a guy at my local B&T shop who was annoyed that he couldn't get his beloved 7 year old Shimano repaired because Shimano no longer has parts for it. He bought a Penn Slammer instead. This was not surprising to hear about Shimano -- they do the same with their cycling parts. I guess that is what they refer to as planned obsolesce. Shimano makes some really good stuff, but they're constantly changing things. There is certainly something to be be said about change for improvement, but I think Shimano changes just to change -- and then they market that small change as a huge improvement that you can't live without. I have both Shimano and Penn reels. In this case, I opted to go with the Slammer for surf fishing because it is a very competent reel and I want to be able to fix and service my reel should southing go wrong a few years from now.

Hey bud happy new year. Really appreciate your in-depth reviews on gear. I'm considering both of these as an option for surf plugging here in the Northeast but did hear that the Saragosa's have an issue with line slap against the rod guide in some cases because of the design of the reel foot which seems was designed more for jigging. If this in fact is the case I'll likely lean more towards a Slammer, Saltist or Spheros. Can you elaborate on this? Thanks.

It depends on the guide layout. In some instances there will be a bit of line slap due to the parallel reel foot.

@rabidgp 3 года назад
@@gonimysh The gosa is more powerful, smoother, and the consider that the two reels are not the same size. Surf fishing from the beach I can retrieve a 4 oz pyramid sinker and rig effortlessly, where the 4000 takes more effort. One issue with the gosa is to be careful to not drop the spool, I dropped the reel once from about 3 feet and it dinged the spool lip which I had to lightly sand so it wouldn't cut the line. The aluminum was softer than I thought it would be.
