One thing I love about your channel is that I find out about movies that I didn't know were based on books. Usually I read the book before seeing the movie, but now I'm reading books AFTER seeing the movies . . . Update: Love your outfit!
In the movie Sally moves back in with her aunts after her husband dies, they don't go over for a drink they already live together. Sally also doesn't call the aunts to save Jillian they come bk from their trip. Sally calls the women on the phone tree
It's been a very long time since i saw that movie, but i remember just being obsessed with the house that they lived in. That witchy aesthetic was everything. Love the top in the video. It's gorgeous!
Discovery of Witches is both a book trilogy & a TV series. It leans more paranormal Romance complete with time travel so if you like historical fiction it scratches that itch too.
When I heard in the audiobook that they left that beautiful house to move to Long Island, I metaphorically threw the book against the wall Sidenote OMG RINGO!
The Alice Hoffman book The Rules of Magic is the best in the series. It’s about the aunts and their lives. There’s more magic in it too. Practical magic is actually the weakest of all of them. The whole series is really great expect for Practical Magic. The prequel about Rebecca Owen’s is good too.
I have the novel and have read it many times since first reading it when the movie came out as a teen in high school. I also have an early draft of the screenplay and it's very different in many ways. I'm friends on Facebook with Alice Hoffman and she's as lovely as you would think. I highly recommend the three other books in the series: Rules of Magic (about the aunts as young women in the 60s), Magic Lessons (about the Owens ancestor Maria), and the most recent one, the sequel Book of Magic, which is being made into a film. At least I HOPE that's the source material they are using.
Honestly, I read the book as well, and thought it was good but different. I wonder maybe if I read the book first and then watched the film how my perspective would be...Always loved the film too! Yet, I feel like women and witchcraft is either romanticized or considered something dark, when in reality, women for thousands of years were herbalists, spiritual healers. Not all were considered witches (depending on the culture). Some women were considered shamans and sometimes could connect with those who has ascended to the spiritworld. The story is a good steppingstone, but only the tip of the iceburg.
Yeah Delicate Condition touches on witches being a type of doctor. I would love to read more books that show them in a more realistic way like that! But I also love the fun, supernatural ways they are shown like in this movie.
The movie is definitely better than the novel. I also think if you see the movie before reading the novel you will definitely be disappointed. The novel definitely has some smooth lines but nothing really happens in the book. The movie is classic with a great soundtrack
Ringo is an adorable rabbit. Much cuter and I'm sure a better drummer than my rabbit Pete Best. Enjoyed your Ripley video yesterday. Left a nice comment and RU-vid deleted it. Don't understand why. Watched Practical Magic on a plane years ago without sound through the crack between seats of passenger in front of me. Enjoyable !!!
Oh weird! Did you watch the show Ripley? I'm curious what you thought! And that's funny 😆 SNL had a sketch recently that was about watching other people's TV while on a plane lol
@@WhytheBookWins Watched first episode of Ripley over weekend but just wasn't in mood for a slow burn drama. Will watch remainder seven episodes one rainy day for one reason....Andrew Scott. 1999's Talented Mr. Ripley is in my Top Ten of all time. Can still hear in my head Phillip Seymour Hoffman voice saying "Tommy how's the peeping". Miss that guy so much. Fun Fact: I haven't stepped inside a row boat now for 25 years since seeing that film. 😎
I have read all 4 books in the Practical Magic saga. I agree, the 1st book (I mean 1st published, not the order of events) could have been soooo much more. Not a bad book, but SO different from the movie and other books. My least favorite. On the other side, the movie is a master piece. I have the feeling that the author saw how the public received the movie and changed her way of telling the story. Even the way she writes after that is completely different, almost like another person. The other 3 books are way better, I think you'll like them. The precuel is good. It is more historical fiction and has witchcraft. Then comes the book about the lives of the aunts, the Rules of Magic. This one is by far my favorite. It broke me. It is so heartwarming and yet so sad. Grab the tissues! Then, the last book, which would come after the movie... It felt a little rushed. It is more on the adventure side. But it was fun.
Thanks for sharing! That's interesting to hear how much her style changed after the movie. I need to catch up on books for book vs movie videos, but once I have time I will definitely be returning to this series!
This is one of my favorite movies & I didn’t know it was based on a book! The movie definitely sounds better, especially since it has a more witchy/supernatural element which were the best parts.
I watched the film adaptation a few years ago it was good I really enjoyed sandra Bullock and nicole Kidman as for the book I read it last year I didn't enjoy it the authors writing isn't as strong like in the two prequel books those are really great I need to read the final book to me the movie wins
Witchy recommendations. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. In the Company of Witches by Auralee Wallace.
Another Great video !!! Thanks for sharing Loved it. I would adore if you’d could review “bones & all” I just finished reading the book. Would like to Hear your feedback/review on it from book to movie :) !!! Thanks so much.
Thanks! And I definitely want to cover that! I'm currently reading Call Me By Your Name, so maybe I'll do that as well and have a Timothee theme going on 😆
Ok, So Sallly does live with the Aunts after her husband dies in the movie- she does live with the Aunts in the movie- look at it again. When she's married she lives with her husband. She moves back in after he dies. Quite frankly, the book doesn't sound better than the movie. Different but not really better.
I thought this was a good film. Do you have any thoughts about the upcoming sequel to this movie? Side note my name is Dave and for some reason RU-vid is not using my name.
Hi Dave! I saw the news about the sequel, not sure if it is for sure yet, but I read that Kidman and Bullock may return for it! I would honestly be thrilled if they made a sequel, I know we are getting so many sequels/prequels/remakes lately, but this is one I would love to see.
I mostly hated the movie because of the dumb decisions. Sally made this man is drunk outside the vehicle but yet you’re still being held hostage just drive away. He’s not in the car.
one of my favorites movies since i was child, i usually watch it with my mom 🥺, i always knew there’s based on a book but i can’t have the opportunite to read it, i hope find it soon and reed it. By the way, in one of the AHS seasons, Coven, they had an episode to homenage the scene with Sally andd Jilly trying to resurect Jimmy 🫶🏻🖤
@@WhytheBookWins yes pls!!! i mean, it’s not bassed in any book but takes historical characarters and treat the witches stuff very very cool ✨🫶🏻 by the way: love your channel since i found it with the AHS Delicates video, i hope u make a video about Grady Hendrix becasue i love him and i reed that he is gonna make his own universe with his books and movies and series ‘cause he wasn’t like My Best Friend’s Exorcism movie
