In this livestream, I’ll be sending SMS, email and app to app messages from the ZOLEO messaging app on my tablet via Satellite on the ZOLEO device.
As you recall in my previous video, ZOLEO uses the same iridium satellite network as Garmin inReach, but the ZOLEO messaging app always checks if Wifi, cellular or satellite is available in order to send the message the cheapest way. This is great when you travel in & out of cellular range and don’t want to use up your message allotment.
When you register a ZOLEO device, you are assigned a dedicated SMS number and email address. But you can send messages to any SMS number or email address. Sending messages app to app give you the biggest flexibility as you can compose up to 1000 characters to other ZOLEO messaging app users; even to those who are using the ZOLEO messaging app but does not have a registered device, or is loaning the device to someone, they can still continue their message threads.

I cant figure out how to send an SMS to a contact that has the Zoleo app. I want to send an SMS because my contact will forget to check the Zoleo app and is not seeing my messages when Im in the back country. In this demo you send a message to contact with all three methods: SMS, email and Zoleo app. On my app, if the contact has ZOleo app, SMS is not an option....

Great video thanks. Have you set up Element/Matrix/Synapse messenging? I am trying to host my own with freedombox and am not finding any current detail info on configuring Matrix/synapse on the freedombox.

Haven’t worked with freedom box but that have to be a future project with my raspberry pi. But I ended up doing an unbutu install on a cloud server and it was smooth as the guide I followed and the only troubleshooting was to open the ports on the server. I haven’t tried getting the integrations working yet, I think it still has some work to do there. Using the Element app on my iPhone an seems to be doing a good job.

Hi! New to your page. Watched a few of your videos on the Garmin watches. Thanks for those they were very helpful. Just wondering if you'll be doing any on the Garmin Venu? I'm new to Garmin and still trying to figure out features. Your videos on the other watches have helped with learning more about the Venu, as features are pretty similar. Thanks in advance

After a year of usage with the ZOLEO and getting a “sneak peak” of features coming in the messaging app; I think ZOLEO is my choice. You have the flexibility of using whatever GPS device you want to use (handheld, smart watch, smartphone) for navigation. You can receive messages when the device is turned off in the truck over Xmas holidays ;) and combined with Gaia GPS or other app you want for mapping - kinda hard to look at inReach the same way especially since it uses the same satellite network and has all the same functions for SOS, check-in & weather.

Zoleo is better its user friendly plus they use the same satellites as Garmin

Hi Great info Jim, i have been looking at the Zoleo for some time.Question? I use UTM on my GPS and that's how i read a map( old fashion lol) anyway is there any way the OK and custom messages's can send out and received in UTM cord's or is it defaulted to Long and Lat. My Spot X can not have not found out if in reach dose that's next greatt video thanks again

Super good question. From the messaging app when you tap the map pin icon to send your current location you can’t change format it only shows as 44.1234,-63.1234. Too bad there’s no easy way to flip it to UTM right now on the ZOLEO app

I tried a couple of things like using Gaia gps to do the cord conversion. It’s a pain unless you write out the cords and have a converter on your phone. That would be the best way right now
