Welcome to Isle of Wight Archive .
The home of unseen amateur Isle of Wight cine film from a golden era .
Maybe you remember those days when the sun seemed to shine constantly and the steam trains ran throughout our island ?
Well Isle of Wight Archive is here to bring back those memories .
These vintage films are taken from the original one off reels and scanned to digital formats by myself .
I also do sprinkle in some modern Isle of Wight film of things happening at the moment .
I always welcome your comments and memories associated with each film .
This is a hobby project and labour of love .

Just found this; the hovercraft hangar at East Cowes still says "British Hovercraft", which was renamed to Westland Aerospace in 1984 (so wikipedia tells me), so no later than that, presuming that the name was changed on the hangar at the same time! (Used to live in Shanklin and then East Cowes, and my dad worked in the office at BHC, but we came to Australia in 1971).

I would say 1980 too, the Metro being centre of the shot suggests that it was something of note. Cheers !

That will be 1980 or later...there's a red Mini Metro in the film, and they came out in 80. Great footage!

The Crab Inn @ 0:51. King Harry's Bar (out of shot) @ 1:16. Nice pubs! The lovely Arreton Manor at 2:06 before it closed to the public - I never did get any pictures! it's now a private home with accommodation. I went on that chain ferry a couple of times but then couldn't find any reason to go to either Cowes or East Cowes! The nearest place of interest to me is Whippingham.

I Was in Ventnor last week, really hasn't changed that much since the 70's. Sure the faces have changed, many buildings forgotten but compared to other countries, it's still very well preserved and still close to what it used to be.
