They failed to mention the most important factor: He uses short pips rubbers which lets him largely ignore the other player's spin while returning the ball with the opposite spin from the opponent's point of view. It also lets him largely plant himself near the table which means he won't have to run, which is what limits older players with orthodox styles.

Short pimples are not reverting the spin that much, compared to long pimples or anti-topspin rubbers. Also the ignoring of the spin is mainly field of mentioned low-friction rubbers. He Zhiwen is using rubber with spin 70. The first attack is quite difficult with short pimps, you cannot use much power because of lack of own spin (more spin curves the ball down faster, so you can hit harder and still manage to place ball at the table). His play is based on fast blocking at the table (totally agree with Melinda on that), returning in wide angles and thus forcing opponent to play further off the table and making errors. Also short pimps are very good for flat striking once the ball is high enough.
