Welding Tables are often times one of the first projects that new welders like to take on. It costs a lot of time, effort and money to design, come up with a bill of materials and go out and buy everything to fabricate your custom table. Not only is it time and labor intensive, but it is very difficult to make it 100% flat.
We recently found a manufacturer of "build your own" welding tables, called Tab and Slot. These tables are not only very affordable, but they are all laser cut with tabs and slots so there is no distortion while you weld, making the table perfectly flat when you're done welding it.
In this episode, we are going to show you how easy it is to build this welding table.
If you are using this video as a guide to build your own table, here is a chapter list to jump from step to step:
Step 1 - 1:24 - Assemble the Framework
Step 2 - 4:45 - Attach & Clamp Down the Outside Framework
Step 3 - 7:37 - Fasten the Table Top to the Framework (with Bolts)
Step 4 - 9:19 - Tack the Slots Around the Outside of the Table
Step 5 - 12:26 - Tack in the Corner Stiffeners
Step 6 - 13:48 - Weld the Framework Together
Step 7 - 15:22 - Flip the Table ... Then, Tack & Weld the Table Top to the Bottom Framework
Step 8 - 18:15 - Weld the Slots Around the Edge of the Table Top
Step 9 - 19:34 - Remove the Bolts, Flip the Table and finish any remaining welds.

Just a tip on flipping the table over, use an engine hoist attached just off center so when you lift it, it flips its self.

I know this is an older video, but love watching and especially listening to him talk. Loved the fact when he said you might have to get a couple kegs and invite 6 of your buddy's over to help flip it. ...lmao, good things their building a table cause before they got it flipped I'm sure they would all be pass out on top of it. Great video and did like the ghosting part.

Rules for assembling a pre-cut fabrication kit of any kind: 1 - grind off flash, blobs, and bumps flush, 2 - de-burr every hole and corner, dress all edges, 3 - dry assemble and check for fit and alignments (square, parallel, flat, etc) 4 - correct any deficiencies found, Then go on to assembly. Among the attrubutes of good workmanship is home-built equipment doesn't shred, maim, scalp, draw blood, scrape, grate, or slice up its user or his overalls.

I scored a 4 foot by 8 foot table with two 3/4 inch plates with a 3 inch honeycomb sandwich between both plates. The top plate was ground flat as well. Probably weighs over 3000 pounds. Just about blew out my tires on my 1 ton truck taking it home. Cost $400. I love it. That's my ultimate table.

I followed this exact procedure on the same table. My table in the middle came out crowned by about .050. I am wondering if the welding process for the top caused some distortion. Maybe do one tack in the middle then the outside and back in. Double check your top when it’s flipped over before welding to top plate on. Thank you for the video it was very informative.

Been in many fab shops as i chased money and overtime+living agrangements. In Metro detroit u see only 2" to 3" slabs that ranged from 4 x10ft. to 10ft x 30ft either Blanchard groung or using 8" cutter head grinding to super accurate. In ship yards on the East coast u stsrt to see the open usually 3 x3" patern holes still grownd to super accurate. 37 YEARS in the bis.

ours down south for farm equipment/API vessels were usually 4'x10' with "hardy holes" like on anvils cut and hard surfaced into the corners. having not only the large surface area, but the holes/tooling came in surprisingly handy when we got custom orders in.

I believe it is a 36" x 48" and the model number is FB3648. I was at their website just now looking at one. It is their largest model that I could find there. It's around $900 without shipping. That is just for the top and doesn't include the leg kit and casters. The leg kit is another $245 and then you have to buy the accessories for it like the angle brackets and bolts and such. You'll probably be into it for about $1,200 when your done.

im not very familiar with welding tables, but does it need to be this sturdy, heavy duty?
@scottmcelhiney323
@scottmcelhiney323 6 лет назад
These kits are not very thick, but the lattice stressed structure makes it stable. Most welders go with the thickest table they can afford/move for the least distortion due to heating when welding and so they can tack things to the table and then grind the tacks back down for years to come. This is for investing in clamps and fixtures rather than tacking your work to the table. I built a 2' x 3' table with a 5/8" top and legs out of square tubing with big bolts and nuts as leveling adjusters for under $200 in materials... but no laser cut anything and a lot of millscale to grind off. I've been thinking about one of these for months, but will have too also invest in clamps and other fixture tools to go with it.

Best way I found to skin this cat is buy plans ($29) from MakerTable.com, have local fab shop laser cut ($800) steel ($400) from local steel supplier. I used 3/8" thickness top and 1/4" thickness for webbing. I paid an additional $90 for 5/8" threaded rod, washers & nuts to make 32 clamps for assembly. Top sits on a pallet conveyor base, which I bought at auction for $25. I also purchased full-locking 5"dia. steel wheel casters (capacity 900lb each) for $80 from hywproducts.com. Prices are what I paid for a 4x6ft table in October 2019 in Charlotte, NC. Total cost $1,400. But I sold conveyor rollers & motor for $400, which helped offset cost. Best, @HoneyOnWales

Nice design and concept but at $5200, and you still have to assemble it yourself, somebody thinks their shit don't stink. For that price I can go buy a 6' x 12' x 3/4" plate plus another plate that size of 3/8" stock for all the backing plates and pay a skilled fab man $35 an hour to manually mill and drill every slot and hole even it takes him a week to do it.
@scottmcelhiney323
@scottmcelhiney323 6 лет назад
Definitely NOT a $5200 table, the ads under the video do not lead to what he is building. I believe he is building this 36" x 48" fab block kit. weldtables.com/products/certiflat-fb3648-fabblock-u-weld-kit-modular-welding-table

Man, that was a piss poor job of trying to make the math work to prove your ridiculous point. You aren't getting that level of precision for $35.00 an hour.
@mrsqueakthecat.8061
@mrsqueakthecat.8061 6 лет назад
How about showing your math and proving him wrong. Where I am at a good fabricator makes far less than $35 an hour which makes his $35 pretty generous for what is remedial metal fabrication work. Plus if you think welding work is or requires high precision you're daft. There's a reason it called welding table and not a machinists assembly table! Which are actually made from solid precision ground stone and actually cost less than those $5200 welding tables do. Starrett sells a 36" x60" x10" solid stone machinist table for ~$4150 and precision ground to +- .0005" dead flat.
@02lb72500HD
@02lb72500HD 6 лет назад
Mr Squeak The Cat. Well its a 1000 welding table used for easy setup and fixturing. But unless you use a cad setup for plas table the chances of actually getting all the holes lined up exact are probably pretty slim hand drilling. If the fab guys are that much under 35 an hour something is wrong. But those machinist stones are freaking killer tho. They had 4 or 5 at the company i used to work for and it took me forever to figure out what they actually were lol
@thecustodian1023
@thecustodian1023 6 лет назад
Pretty sure you don't need holes set to 1000'ths of an inch tolerances for welding fixture set up work. +-1/8" would be plenty accurate enough an I've been around professional fabricators and machinists for near 40 years and I don't know any who make $35 an hour that aren't overpaid union hacks. But I do know many would knock that table out to
