Bob so right, even if you weld for years you always have to practice processes that you do not do everyday. I can TIG weld for weeks or months then have a bunch of jobs come in the shop for Stick or MIG if I did not spend time practicing I would get out of practice and then have to spend a few hours getting back into the grove. Hi Bob, Your comments are spot on. Same with so many things. Reading all the books on a subject might give you an understanding and the theory, but not the physical execution skills. And you need to keep doing it to maintain those skills over time. It's like reading hundreds of books on playing a musical instrument, and then picking up that instrument and expecting to perform at a professional level. It just doesn't happen. Thanks for the continuing great videos.

Haven't heard you give the camera guy shit in a while but he deserves it on this one! The camera work is almost always impeccable here on but this one was a fail. Topic was arc length, but because of the angle it could not be seen at all also the exposure was too high so shot was more washed out than normal. I know I've been spoiled with amazing arc shots in the past from weld . com and I still got the point of video. Thanks Bob

Steve just Steve I agree, the camera work and quality was very disappointing given topic. Watching someone weld a lap weld from an angle where you can't see anything isn't good. It makes the video unfortunately almost pointless, which sucks because I love weld.com over any other weld channel.

Can we get some videos on running 7018 with AC? Maybe strength of the weld when it is done with AC vs DC. Or different uses for each one?

Like these videos on Everlast welders. They seem to be good tigs for the money. These videos got Everlast a sale. Got a 200dv on order. Got for the adjustments for the pulse. Want to see more on pulse on this machine

How about doing some tig welding without a foot peddle just using a button start and a wheel for adjustment of amps. We don't all have a foot peddle. Also a foot peddle is a problem if you have to walk around welding different corners on a large project.

Well Crap! His blown up weld is even better than mine.. more practice... Bob, I would love video finely dissecting arc initiation, esp w. aluminum. All these vids start an arc, but on my (AHP) I can hit the pedal and the arc will start no where near (like a bead width off) the joint. My heat input goes high trying to get it going where I want. Once going, it goes fair. Problem is worse welding diff thickness material. IE bracket to a tube. BTW, this struggle is with perfectly clean material best I can, new ground tungten (blue), etc... Thanks for teachings as always!!

Hi Bob, may I ask you a question that makes me crazy ? I saw that you give big importance to work in a save way and maybe you can help me. I use 2% lanthaned electrodes. I have red somewhere that also those are slighty radioactive (apart the thoriated that I knew to be dangerouse and I do NOT use them). Is that true that also the lanthaned are radioactive ? As I have a family at home I am scared to bring radioactive dust home. Can you tell me if I should be worried about the lanthaned ones ? On the package is written "NOT RADIOACTIVE" but on the web you find that there might be "slightly" radioactive. I love TIG welding and I have learned a lot from you. But this is really putting a lot of doubts in my mind. Thanks a lot for your patience.

Alpha radiation does not penetrate the skin. That said, do not breath the dust when you grind your tungsten and you'll be fine, thoriated or lanthinated.

Hi, thanks for the reply. So does it mean that the Lanthaned one IS radioactive ? I feel that it is allmost impossible to avoid particles of dust, even if you are carefull. Even if you have a suction some of the particles surly will "escape". I mean, even one radioactive particle is dangerouse, isn't it ?

Just wear a mask if it bothers you that much man. I've got a 3M mask with the quick latch drop down mechanism and highly recommend getting one with that latch. I don't wear for grinding tungsten rather mainly to prevent black boog (and prob lung) when from plasma and general grinding. Honestly, I bet your exposed to 100 times the radiation on 3hr flight.

It means that it is radioactive at a level at or below a cell phone or a microwave oven. In other words, it's not dangerous. If you are a hobbyist you will likely not have much exposure not matter what. If you weld every day and grind a lot of tungsten wear a respirator. That is my understanding of the level of radioactivity. If you are still worried about it, go to ceriated and avoid it all together.

G'day Bob I keep sticking the filler wire ahead of the weld puddle any pointers on how to stop that or what I could be doing wrong. I noticed you have a very steep push angle on the torch I am more up and down then that what angle should I use thanks Bob

Love starting my morning with coffee and your videos......... Hey, what model air-cooled torch is that? I have a big 18 water-cooled torch and I'm looking for a smaller air-cooled torch with a Dinse 35 plug that will "bolt" right into my Everlast 256Si combo machine........... THANKS!!

Ken A The only air cooled torch thats physically smaller, is a wp/ck sized 9 torch, or a 24 series which is smaller still. Thing is, a 9 series torch cant handle much heat only around 120amps max (i think, dont use them). A 17 sized torch is a bit better at around 150, but same size torch as a water cooled 18 or air cooled 26. The only torches i use at work are 18's, and if access into a joint is an issue i use 4series consumables, ie the stubby gas lenses and shrouds and a short back cap.

Watching your torch hand, I noticed you pivot your torch hand rather than slide. So you can only weld about two inches then have to stop and restart. I've never been able to slide my hand and thought pivoting was a bad habit

Jason Marcinski I'm going a couple of inches to demonstrate various welds. I can weld way farther by sliding, rolling, pivoting. Whatever it takes.

I know you weren't addressing this to me, but as I am also a highschool student (3rd year in my welding class) I can tell you that if you keep scrolling through the comments until you read one by Gallagher Metal Works, that's essentially the biggest issue I've encountered. So if you're planning on welding as a career, never neglect any one style, type, process of welding; and always experiment, try out different positions and techniques, see what works for you.

Mr. Moffat, while you were honing your welding chops I was honing my musical chops and only a few years ago started melting metal. I really love welding but find it way too expensive to pursue as a hobby and I couldn't imagine taking on the cost of it to go into business. There is nothing inexpensive in the world of welding today and I would like to ask you if it has always been this way? Could be part of the reason no one is going into the trades anymore!? I would really like your thoughts on it, thanks in advance!

lolz larkin not exactly what I was talking about! Stick is a great start, and everyone should have a buzz box and know how to use it to get himself out of a pinch but even getting an Oxygen Acet. rig is pretty pricey and just another $700 stepping stone towards mig and tig welding. That's where I'm at. Making custom hot rod and motorcycle parts, altering m/c frames, tanks and fenders, the occasional home decor piece for the wife or as a gift. You know, the good stuff! Don't get me wrong it's not like I'm sitting here making all this stuff, but I would if I could afford it! Think about it if you did each discipline, $500 for a stick rig, O/A $500 for a decent regulator/ torch kit plus $XX for a 2 tank lease and refills, Tig machine complete plus all consumables and another tank lease, Mig machine with consumables and yet another tank lease the sky is the limit!!! And just as no one Gass is good for all processes, no one process is good for all situations! Funny, it seems to be a rich man's game, but I don't know one rich guy who can weld! Maybe one day I'll meet one!

Oxy acetalyne can do just about anything mig tig or stick will do, just a lot slower. $500 for a stick welder is you pampering yourself, a lincoln tombstone off Craigslist can be snagged for under $100 if you watch the listing a for a few weeks and will do a fine job putting down metal. Mig is totally frivolous if you aren't looking to put down more than 10 pounds of weld metal an hour doing a run of several identical parts

Cost of welding has nothing to do with it! Actually tig welding has gotten cheaper with inverter machines. In my state, the schools have cut out the traditional shop classes in junior high and high school. The schools are preparing students for one thing College. This is why no one is going to trade schools.
