SNS 215: Everlast Powertig 200DV, Shaper Vise

We get the new Everlast welder hooked up and run some test welds in preparation to using in on the new ZTFab welding cart. I'll show the unboxing of the welding cart in this video as well.
After getting the shaper vise trammed in I decide to make a cut on the fixed jaw to get it trued up.

Actually, I have to say, it's hypnotic watching you work. You and some of the other machinists you know and others have shown and taught me a lot of techniques that do come in handy, as a machinist myself. Thanks Abom79! Keep up the good work.

Hay Adam cool to see the new technology of the welder in the same video as the old technology of the shaper, a contrast that can be appreciated.

Adam, the shop is looking great. Being in the shop should be fun, and its a lot more fun when you have the space for a big project like the G&E rebuild. All of your patience and hard work on the shop improvements over the last year or so have definitely paid off. Your dad would be proud to see what you've accomplished. Thanks for letting all of us spend some time in your shop each week.
@Abom79

Yes I really enjoy all of the improvements, and the addition of the shaper. Thanks!

Adam, I want to thank you for your videos, especially SNS. Last Thursday, I lost my wife of eight years to complications of the Flu. The last two weeks have been a nightmare. Having an episode of SNS to watch gives me a sense of normalcy. Thank you for that. Life is uncertain and short. Treasure every single day.

As a non-machinist, I find all of the content on the channel informative but the shaper videos are special. It's a nice thing to see old machinery being brought back to life and usefulness so if you keep posting posting videos on it I will keep watching them (in addition to most everything else you put up).

Impressive result on the shaper vice - Surprising finish, especially considering part of the cut was interrupted across the mounting holes, but the finish stayed true. Kudos on bringing a "Well used" tool back to useful life. Anxiously awaiting some projects that use the shaper to full advantage.

Great video - I use 2t with the torch switch quite a bit. The 2t settings on these modern machines do most of what you would actually do with your pedal, especially for steel. For setting up and tacking it is great to be able to move around without worrying about the pedal. You do have to think about your current setting before you jump in just as you would with mig. Before anybody gets excited, the pedal has some big advantages, no argument, but 2t with a torch switch on this kind of a machine is a good option for lots of jobs.

I’ve been using the 2T for all of the tacking and it’s been great! Really like it!

Another very nice SNS, thank you. Considering the oil dripping from the Shapers Ram - the way my shaper is designed, the bolt-on pieces that you used to put felt wipers inside are actually used as oil collectors with no wiper in them. The oil gets "scraped off" by the dovetail ways themselves, drains down into the bolt-on collectors and return to the main oil supply through holes drilled into the main casting. I don't know if that's the same way yours was intended to be used but I'd say it would definately worth to be considered since you can still adjust the oilers to give the ram a thick coating but get no oil leakage because all spillage is returned to the main sump. All the Best Adrian

A handy tip for welding thicker aluminum is to use a shielding gas with 75 helium 25 argon mixture. This gas mix gives about 30 amps extra heat. I use Air Liquide Blueshield 3 for welding thick aluminum.

Not sure that welder has it but up-slope is also a great feature to play with Adam. You can start the arc at about 20 amps and when you let off the button, it will ramp up. Great for pipe welding and aluminium etc, Gives you time to put the arc just where you want it before pumping up the heat. Great vid!

No I don’t think this one will, but in 4T you can set it to start at a very low amperage, and once you let off the finger witch it goes to the set amperage.

Hi Adam! Are you sure that was a drill bit, and not just a big, springy, curly chip? 😆 Looks like something that would come off of that big lathe you have at work. Also, there’s Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, and Natural Bridge caverns here in Texas, should you be into that sort of thing. It’s great that you’ve got the G&E shaper up and running, but don’t neglect you’re other tools, like your Monarch lathe, or your horizontal/vertical milling machine; they need TLC as well!
