I never took a G1 test plate but it's good to see how it is done. So many welder fail trying to do a g2 test plate or g3 test plate flat when no one is looking. Thinking the weld was stronger flat just to find out that the penetration was poor in the flat position.

I really wish I'd had a teacher that could explain all the aspects of what was happening and WHY like you. Instead I had a person who just criticized without a corrective answer, just told you this is the way do it right never really teaching you what you did wrong. So yeah I had A LOT of bad habits I had to overcome because no one ever explained what I was doing was wrong and what happens when you do it that way. Just told you thats wrong go fix it😑😧 discouraging.. I hope a few of your students go on to teach. There will be a new generation of competent skilled welders that come out

My welding instructors in the 70s were boilermakers trained by the TVA Tennessee valley authority in 40s and 50s.They went from moonshine stills under pressure to pressure vessels, condensate units and turbines.Same only different. In retrospect they were very fine welders. They tig welded the root on the boiler tubes in new construction. On repairs they had a lead splitted.A "Y"one boilermaker outside the wall of tubes one on the inside. They were skillful sharing the same machine they would break arc quickly around the far inside and the other welder would strike up quicky in the same hot puddle.Repairs were stick welded.8010 8018.Preheat post heat of course. In the rural areas at that time many were KKK members and they solicited new members on the jobsite..They understood pressure vessels and condensate units because they were already using them on their moonshine stills.WHAT A BUNCH OF CHARACTERS!When you "boomed out"[traveled somewhere]the first thing you learned was [by word of mouth]where to purchase the local moonshine.Usually sold for 20$ and in a one gallon milk jug.Luckily you were so busy during the "shut down"that there was little time or energy [even for a young man]to spend in idle stupid stuff]especially since the journeyman put all the hardest nastiest work on the apprentices.[and rightly so].There was a hierarchy in the boilermaker unions at that time complete with literally black balling apprentices [with white and black marbles]If you got a black marble you were OUT!And you would not even know who put the black marble in.There was a secret knock at the union meeting if you were late.I think they were tied in with the masons somehow.Anyway in the early 80s I felt the calling to go west young man -so I went back to Alaska where I had spent a few years prior. The rest is history I was a pipe welder for 42 years been retired for 2 years now. However I will always be indebted to a couple of fine welding instructors that are dead now so I guess I can say their names Roy Chaney and John Feltman. And a mention to the cantankerous old "Possum" Elrod who almost black balled me [probably ]because I made him get up off his lazy a** from the bucket he was sitting on in a confined space when I accidentally turned on the wrong set of oxy/acet gauges : the hoses of which ended with nothing on them venting to atmosphere .Once he smelled and heard that he was forced to get up off his lazy ass where he had been watching me work on a superheat header for two weeks.I had a lot of fun down there in Dixie.Back then if you were sent for an" A" cloth ie [asbestos cloth]you went and got it and got back on the elevator with a ragged old asbestos cloth contamination every one.Times have changed some things better most worse in my humble opinion.

24:00 i think they think the purpose of the bend test is to assure the welds integrity under fatigue and stress on a regular basis.... if im correct they have no notion of the destructive power of that little tiny ram in a box. that it could be used to systematically topple a skyscraper to the ground. that force would never ever meet a piece of metal in real service. the test is designed to make it fail with a 2% chance of not failing. if you can weld in that 2% range you have earned yourself one step closer to a state certification.

I am interested in seeing your technique in back feeding the filler metal using GTAW Process. Viewing the videos, I understand that is your favorite method in welding a root pass, either on pipe or plate in some cases. I would very much appreciate if you could show the "welders point of view", looking through the gap, while back feeding the wire, starting from 6 o'clock advancing to 12 o'clock. This is of course welding beveled pipe coupons. 6 - 8 inch schedule 40 or 80. It could be either a 5g or 6g position. Thank you for the educational videos.

Thank you on the root mishap, I never really understood why I got a divot on the back side of my root. Now I do have one question on the 7018 fill did you plunge grind the edges of the weld and if so how deep should one go. I ask because i was told to do this before, but every time i have tried, I either got pin holes on my cap or it would bust on the bend. The only way I could stop that was to not grind it but crank the machine up by 5-10 amps, and I've been told that it's not the proper way to do that.

Awesome video Bob. Don't listen to all the mommies in the comment section crying about your ventilation. The smoke isn't that bad, it's a fact of welding. Hopefully you left out the grinding part so they wouldn't be nagging you about a lack of the safety guard. It might kill them if they had witnessed that reality of welding right after the mean ole smoke.
