As a 66 year old recently started hobby welder I have no idea why I watched this but having seen it to the end I feel like it's an essential part of my learning how to weld. Great job.

Thank you for your very detailed and thorough explanation of exactly what you have going on in this weld. Many of us, young or old (60) are youtube learning here. Your covering so many basics that other good welding channels take for granted is much appreciated. Although I foresee never having to face a welding test and not doing anything but hobby welding, I am learning a lot from your channel. Now its time to head out to the shop to practice.

As a long time viewer from the beginning I would love if you guys could attempt to mig weld (RMD or stt) a 8” piece of schedule 10 stainless. Miller says it can be done in 1 pass with RMD. But other than them saying that I’ve yet to find video of anybody trying it

I usually take a soapstone and mark it about a 1/16" from the edge of the bevel and use it as a guideline for the edge of my cap pass. I try to avoid using a grind line since if you accidentally go to far over it will fail visual.

But some of my viewers keep on telling me to attach a running plate to my workpiece coz I usually do the same thing as your preparation in our practice. I want to clarify this by asking you a question about when to use a running plate when welding like this. Thank you for your response and keep the fire burning.

Really good video. The only suggestion I'd make is to see some additional close up when NOT welding (like you did at 15:40). Other than that was really informative.

wait ao you put a landing on the top of the groove for the cap?

should have shown us what the root pass looks like before grinding... or each and every pass... and maybe after grinding... that way we know what it should look like and what to shoot for.

What happens if you do a 7018 open root? Or use only one type of electrode on it?

Thank you, I got ideas for my test but there is something I dont understand: your root pass was 100 amps becuase is a 6010 1/8, your first pass was 125 amps becuase is a 7018 1/8, and when the plate is already warm your second pass was 135 amps, higher than the first pass? it is not lower for the heat effect, I mean second pass 110 amps?

Can you guys make a video of inconel and 309 stainless stick welding to this same plate. Might help some people. I just toom 9 plate test. 3 carbon, 3 309, and 3 inconel. Had no clue how to weld the 309 to carbon or the inconel. I did manage to pass all 18 bends though.

Would the temperature you are using here will it work on a 3/8 plate?

I have the same exact welder and I cannot figure out the voltage settings for stick mine is set at 86.6 Volts

For the root you use thinner electrodes?

Out of the dozens of weld tests I've done, grinding the test piece was an automatic fail. I also passed those said weld tests.

Where did you get that type of welding hood?

before attempting a test, be sure that you are allowed to use grinding discs. some tests allow only wire wheels/cups because they don't remove material.

What amperage are you at with your root? Still 70?

How do you know how many hot passes you need between the root pass and when your start your cap passes? Is the cap literally just the last few passes to get it flush with the top?
