It was a great pleasure to meet you both at Fabtech, and I would encourage anyone whom can, to attend this next year in Chicago. I surely will.

Please do more Alu spool gun videos! I have to weld old broken aluminum trailers/etc at work from time to time and would like to see some more tips and tricks, volt and wire feed settings etc. I use a miller spool gun with .030” 4043 running off a old Lincoln idealarc 350 and straight argon. It can be a real pain to get a decent weld!
@bbbiesemeyer1
@bbbiesemeyer1 5 лет назад
Steve Jones what kind of trailers? I fix western commodity trailers on the daily. I usually run at 21.5-22 volts and 5-6 on Wf speed. If you have feeding issues take the wire out and blow threw the liner if you have the tension to tight the wire will be spiraling out the gun and the aluminum chips clog the liner up n it can be a nightmare from hell lol. Just back the tension off then tighten it slightly tell it pushes the wire threw ur fingers. Also depending on the thickness warm the metal up with a torch not hot but 100 degrees or so it welds so much better.
@VortekXtiik
@VortekXtiik 3 года назад
I would recommend using 5356 wire, 4043 is commonly used for cast aluminum and not structural. Also try using 3/64 wire, it’s the most common and probably easiest to learn, set your voltage, then set your wfs, if it’s too hot still, turn your voltage and wire down, once you get the hang of it, weld coupons and keep those settings written down for the next time you want to use those settings.

That 5356 is sootier than 4043 but theres a lot of pulling going on. I like doing a little c shape weave on the first puddle to begin the weld. Seems to help get some heat in the part ahead of the weld.

Bob, it’s a bit confusing about which Al alloy to use. Mostly I use 4043 in my spool gun. But I couldn’t pass up a deal on 3 one pound spools of 5556, but I haven’t figured out exactly what it’s best for. But $15 for three new, sealed spools was too good to pass up. Were you using, what was it again, 5356, because it’s stiffer, or melts at a higher temp, or whatever, because it was overhead, or for some other reason?

Why do so many people think the correct way to weld aluminum is to drag with no manipulation of the puddle whatsoever, I mean jesus, turn the wire speed up!! You're too damn hot bob!! My perfect temp. For 1/4 with .035 is 21.5 and 460. Comes out amazingly every time, and navy inspectors don't seem to point out flaws that often, I guess it's just me. When you're taught to build boats, I guess you're just better with aluminum than everyone else lol. Btw, you want the crackle, the reason y'all have so much soot, is because you don't have enough wire speed, or enough angle forward, just a friendly tip. Keep on making the great videos I love it.
