Just wanted to thank the two of you for this channel. I'm a first year Beek and have learned a great deal from watching your videos, more than anything I've read. Keep of the great work, I'll be watching!!
Hey Kamon, I know you hear this a lot but I just want to add my thanks for sharing your experience with us. It takes time from your day to make these videos and I wanted you to know I appreciate it. Even after 21 years, I can see how much you still love working with the bees. I hear you say "I just love it" in nearly every video. Keep up doing what you do as long as you can.
I guess when you said “what a great girl “ you were talking about your lovely bride . LOL . Thank you BOTH for everything you do for the Bee keeping family. I hope you are having a great season. THANKS
Thank you! Going into my third winter. Wanted 2 hives have 10 now. Equipment isn't cheap. If I could make comb like this I could sell splits. This is gonna make all the difference in the world to a backyard beek like myself. Saw you interview with Fredrick Dunn. Your youtubes are a game changer and I have only watched three so far...Two I've watched twice. Thank you!
Hi Kamon! You showed us how to do this way back when........thankyou. I'm sharing this with my new beekeeper friends that don't have comb. It's a gamechanger!
Kamon! I am excited to get out there and split my hive. Your videos keep me going with the love of the bees and nutrition and the beauty they enhance❤ I am so thankful to be a beekeeper 1 full yr in May. I am proud to say I caught one of my swarms and it worked 3 weeks ago(1st ever) I have 4 hives now and hopefully I successfully split 1 more this week. 🙏. May God bless you and yours for all your hard work. P.S. I just bought the gloves, I hope its not forever I want to go without like you. Been stung about 40 times mostly bc I had difficulty with the smoker staying lit. Pine needles and burlap and wax. Hope wax in there is not a stupid idea.
Thanks Reynolds fam. 👍 Blackberry was light this year (likely rain). Pulled Friday and about to break out the barrels and get some comb. 😃🐝 Also totally agree with old(er) comb if you know its origin. Probably 4-5 tips from you guys made a big difference in our yard. Many thanks (until time to buy another ticket 😂).
I want to say I really enjoy your videos and all that you do to help other beekeepers. I have a question about virgin queens when they go on a mating flight do they come back to the hive at night or do they stay out for several days till they are finished mating?
Good stuff Kamon. I need to start feeding more to draw out comb. Have some old stuff I probably need to start cycling out. Can you maybe address how cycle your comb out and what you do with that old black stuff. Would make a nice video I think. I have burned a lot of my old comb in the past but maybe there in another way?
Don't forget about your use of miticide building up in the combs. Trace amounts of residuals can lead to resistance. Old comb should be replaced on a continuous basis.
Ha Kamon good video glad your flow is doing good not here and now it is over the weather has just been so bad here, I will be happy if I get any, honey. They had some and they were not able to fly for a week and they ate every thing. kamon when u feed to draw the comb do u use buckets or fram feeders I did some splits as well and the new queens look wonderful full sheets just like yours and I am feeding some with the buckets that I got from Bob Binnie they have the 6 holes in them, and some with the mother lobe, . fram feeder just do not know what way is the best to draw the comb thanks have a blessed day.
Can you tell me which of your videos to go to to learn about these buckets you put on top for feeding? YOUR videos are AWESOME... Art from the Great Shenandoah Valley !!!
Thanks for the kind words! I really think my friend Bob has the best videos on RU-vid when it comes to explaining feeders and feeding. Worth every second to watch in my opinion. Here is one of the videos on bucket feeders ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uf6kCFfXQcw.html
Kamon, I have been keeping bees for about 6 years, but have always had trouble getting comb drawn out. So you always put the frames that need drawing out on top? And you only bring one frame of brood up to that location? Add in the middle of that top box? Thanks. David
@@kamonreynolds I'm down near Pulaski Kamon. Our flow has been the best it's ever been in 5 years for me. There are some older beekeepers saying it's the best they've ever seen. Perfect conditions at my yards in Pulaski TN and Ardmore TN.
Second grafting fail none took again....any advice...I feel I have it right but when I flip the cells to put in hive royal jelly leaked out and I guess the larvae did as well? Am I using too much? Any help would be great...and kaymon...selling any queens? I'd love to get my hands on one or two and can pickup locally...
True. Those Chinese Tractor Supply frames are trash. I bought some because I was in a pinch the other day. They all had to be re-stapled... Some were literally falling apart... and recoated with beeswax. Plus they cost twice what acorn, pierco, or premier cost.
Kamon, up here in the north of Iowa where it gets down to freezing for a few months, where do I want the brood boxes to have honey, just one or two end frames each side and around the edges? Don't they need a lot of honey in the bottom box or two to help protect them from the cold in the winter? I know they 'move up', so although you keep talkin about the danger of them back filling, don't they need that honey down below to keep them warm? Or should I pull honey deeps during the summer and then throw them on the ends during winter? Is it okay to have bottom boxes with nothing but eggs and brood and no honey?
Hi Kammon, I'm a second year beekeeper with limited comb. I fed sugar syrup this spring to get my girls to drawn comb. The flow has really started here in central Kansas and I have a hive with the second box filled with sugar honey. Can I extract that and put the frames right back in the hive to capture the Clover and alfalfa nectar that is in full bloom ?, Thanks, Scott
Yes, extract the syrup honey and save it to fed back to the bees. Put your wet comb back on the hive, the bees will make repairs and back fill it with the stuff coming in.
KAMON im a new beekeeper and I started out with the bee jacket that most kits come with and I’m going to be upgrading and was wondering if you could recommend a suit im not sure if i should go with a jacket or suit
@@kamonreynolds I did roughly the same thing. I also moved it down the line so the foragers had to find a new home. I sure hated to kill her they were really producing bees and honey.
Kamon, I'm new so having trouble in one hive getting them to draw comb. About 2 weeks ago I found several queen cells so decided to do a split into a 5 frame nuc. Moved queen and resources to the nuc and left the double deep queenless. Bottom deep was fully drawn but the top deep was only about half drawn. I've been feeding 1-1 but they have not drawn more since the split. I inspected today and actually watched a queen working on emerging. I closed up the hive and let them be and hopefully she gets mated. Problem is most of the comb is being backfilled filled with pollen and nectar and there is not much open cells. Any suggestions? Your supposed to feed to help them produce wax but it seems their just storing the 1-1.
Hey Bert it wasn't. I am sure there was 10 more just like it. After a while you can tell when they are dry or when they are building them out even if ever so slightly. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Those frames packed with brood tell us that the queen is healthy and the 50% laying Queens you talk about, those should be put down. I don’t like them and I have some. Thank you Kanon. Seems like Tennessee is a good in making wild honey. Here in N Texas it’s not so good. Today was 100 degrees.
I have a double brood box colony that has charged queen cells. There is still room for the queen to lay. Why could this be happening? There are a lot of bees but there is still laying room. I feel like the only things could be that the colony wants to replace the queen although I don’t see a reason visually. Or they need to swarm. But again there is laying room. What else should I be looking for?
Beautiful frames. I'm having trouble with my combs ending up bowed or convex/concave. Some of it originated with warped foundation that i foolishly tried to use anyway. But other times the foundation seems fine and they end up curved anyway. It makes it a real pain when lifting frames, lots of rubbing. Is there a trick to getting nice flat combs that are even on each side. What foundation do you prefer right now? Thanks for all to excellent content.
i have noticed that some plastic foundations are taller than the gap they fit in making it look warped. They need popped out of the frame and the plastic foundation needs an 1/8 " trimmed off the botton then it will slide a bit and should flatten out.
@kamonreynolds can you advise be about wax life.. I remember at least one video mentioning 5 years but forget what you suggested for the wax after 5 years.
