Got a swam from 26 feet up a few weeks ago... THAT was fun! Used a bucket on the end of a VERY LONG bamboo pole, standing on a ladder, trying to dislodge them. Luckily I got the queen and a few bees on the first try. Stuck the queen in a queen clip in the box. The rest of the bees were still 26 feet up and I banged the ball a few times to dislodge them and get them to come down. It still took the rest of the swarm over two hours to get in the box... but I got them in the end!!!

I really don't want to have to catch my own swarms this year. I'm making splits in a few days and it's supposed to be raining until then 🤞. In Maryland we are still getting brood chilling so my colonies might not really be booming yet, but they do have adult drones, so.

So fascinating! I’m surprised by two things; that the bees go into the box without a queen in it and that they even move away from the queen into the box. I thought you would have had to put the queen into the box first to get them to go into it. What makes them march towards the box? I’m a first year beekeeper. We just did our first split from a swarm we caught last spring. Thanks for your videos, never get tired of watching and learning about the bees!
@tobermoryattraversiamo9575
@tobermoryattraversiamo9575 Год назад
Apparently it's the bees themselves that give off the signal pheromones to give the marching orders! This applies to swarming too. How one bee decides one day to start this signal which then begins copycat signalling from the others is anyone's guess?

i use lemongrass essential oil in an extreeeeeeemly tiny amount smeared just inside the top of the new hive box. This imitates the pheromone of the queen. I’m really new at this but so far it works!

I’m excited!!!! I just got done setting my first swarm trap of the year today , it’s my first using swarm commander ! Years ago I caught ferals with spearmint and lemon grass oil, it worked every year, at one time when I was younger we had 400 colonies and every single bee was caught, this was in harford county Maryland, most of my family is from Denton valley Tennessee and Bristol, which every summer in Bristol we would catch a couple swarms and take them back to harford , Maryland and keep the gene pool mixed up , we had great success years ago but there weren’t mites back then either and the bees were naturally hygienic back in the 70’s and didnt tolerate strangers in their brood boxes very well , I’m basically learning all over again after a 25 year break, but I never forgot my foundation for bee keeping , that’s a plus 😜

Have fun doing this when you are in your 30's! But at 65, this show ain't happening on top of a truck. I missed a small swarm Saturday in a willow tree at arm-length level. Got there a little too late, and the queen went from the swarm cluster to the air and I watched them with a tiny tear in my eye as she turned the corner around the lake. :(

Question. I see all be boxes are the same size. What if you made them bigger would the amount of bees grow? Like a fish adapts to the size of a tank. I see outside huge hives and think no way can that fit inside a small box. Has anyone ever tried? Or they want to keep it easy for them to just rob the honey 🍯 and forget the bees? We need more 🐝

With 2 swarms could one be a prime and the other a secondary? Or does secondary usually come few days later? Too , if one is secondary will one have a virgin queen or will she have already mated?
@carrollrhodes4050
@carrollrhodes4050 3 года назад
Dear TN, Here in SW Florida, I have been working with a lot of hybrid bees owing to the advent of the Africanized bees. The big surprise has been that there are a lot of virgin queens along with the old queen. Sometimes the whole 30 to 40 thousand population will leave a box. The virgins will be very active. The virgins and old queen out at one time. Here is tjhe deal. By the time the swarm gets to a new location they will still be in a swarm mode. This is when they will start dividing. The old queen will leave with a contingent to a nearby cavity. The next division will be the oldest virgin. fNot the newest mated virgin. She stays with the first worker-comb built by the originating workers. Then they will continue to to leave until the virgins all leave and ultimately are mated at their new location. I was stunned to find a swarm that ultimately gave 10 colonies. Yes the secondary virgin, and more will leave the area of the old queen swarm! Will the secondary have mated? Not at the first leaving of a colony. Even Europeans. These A-bees can be an eye ope;ner. I have been watching Canadian bk's and NC bks and one in TN and you are not quite in the real fight. You are all good bks and you won't have any problems with hybrids. I really enjoyed watching Kamon put those bees in a box!
