People asked me a lot about automatic transmissions from a VW Fastback Squareback Notchback Variant Type 3. While I haven't worked on the transmissions themselves, they are quite a bit more complicated when it comes to removal. This video should demonstrate the automatic transaxle removal from a VW Type-3.

Just seeing this now and I was wondering. What's your thoughts on making a trike with a square back. Seems that these type 3s are a bit more "complicated" than a big motor which is more typical in a trike build?

You are so right on on the distributor advice. And many insist on using the .009’s. The stumble on them is a problem because of the advance and some try to fix it by running too rich.
@DuckmanCycles

009 is just so damn terrible in a car. They're fine in a compressor or a generator though.... hell even in a tractor. But nobody ever wants to listen to me, even local folks. Every time someone brings me a car that has a 009 and tells me there is a timing issue, I just agree. LOL! And if you want it fixed, get a 034. I won't even mess with a 009.

I had a 70 squareback auto trans, same color as this one that I resurrected from the dead years ago. Loved the fuel injection and auto trans as I found out they were rare back in the day. I did have to replace the Vacuum Modulator on the trans as the old one would hold vacuum anymore. Being up in CT at the time, I used all new heater boxes and connectors for heat and defrost. tried using headers with Monza exhaust, didn't like the sound so installed original exhaust. Engine seemed to run smoother and cooler.

No comment on engine removal Keeping the front-end lower will help with the torque converter in place. Fuel pressure on fuel injection is 28 psi but the car runs better in southern states at 30 psi The transmission shifting points can be adjusted through the modulator vacuum port with a long thin straight blade screwdriver

My modern VW has a very crappy defroster too. you have to run the AC with Defroster to get it to do a good job? Right now my VW Jetta needs me to fix the fuel pump I replaced but it leaks on a brass nipple and Im too busy to fix it. I need some weather where its not raining and Im not going to the doctor or someplace. Seems I will never get it done. Then the transmission limp mode is stuck on what big problem have to take it to Fort Smith 80 miles away. I cannot fix the limp mode problem.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles Год назад
Seems most cars are that way, gotta run the AC with defroster to dry that air out to work as a de-fogger. My Z and my Acura before it would automatically turn on the AC when the defroster was turned on. I can force the AC off after it comes on, but the defroster doesn't defog the glass as well until it warms the glass up enough.

Where does the vacuum line that come from trans connect to ? I have a 69 it has a 32/36 and vacuum line is connected to the carb itself and also has the 009 might switch it to 034 but can’t find a spot for the vacuum line on the carb I’m also looking into dual carbs since the 32/36 on the car is a water choke one not a fan of the carb
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles Год назад
The vacuum line that goes to the transmission should be connected to the fuel injection throttle body/plenum. In this car, its been converted to carburetors so it should go in the middle of the balance tube or directly to the intake manifold. The 034 should be connected to the port on the carburetor, a 009 should never be used. We'll talk about this more in future videos. Hope that helps! Thanks for the question!

I don't know why you can't just custom make a aluminium pipe to fit the heater hoses. You just tig weld pie cuts together to fit. Then you would have to worry about the heater hoses no more. If the engine is no good. A Subaru engine would be a great replacement conversion.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles Год назад
Because I don't weld aluminum, that's why.... and this is Florida. Heat not needed, nor are the headaches (sometimes literally) with such a system. Heater hoses never belonged on here anyway. Subaru sounds like fun, but not my car, not my choice.

Hey Duckman. Do you have any experience in T3 Vanagons? My brother has a 2.1 auto waterboxer that initially we thought the engine had seized but after they took the engine out, it turned free so they thought it was the transmission but that turned free too. Reassembled and it ran fine for 20miles then after parking up briefly, he tried to start it and again the engine refused to turn over. Starter has been checked off the vehicle and the engine was still seized with it not mounted. We're stumped.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles Год назад
The flex plate on all VW automatics tends to be a weak spot and explodes, it can give symptoms of engine or trans lockups depending on how badly it blew out. I'd check that and see what you got there. I have also seen strange things happen when the wrong (too thick) starter bolt is used. But those are both guesses, ultimately I have no idea without seeing, but that is a strange one. Take it apart again!
@ro63rto
@ro63rto Год назад
@@DuckmanCycles Thanks for the pointers. The flex plate looked intact but i don't think he actually removed it. I'll tell him to do that and check incase it's cracked and not yet fallen apart. If it is it would be exactly like the rear hub on his Vespa PX200e. As for the starter, he did remove it a while ago and i think he said he inserted the long bolt the other way around to make it easier to remove next time. I wonder if that has had any effect?
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles Год назад
Backwards bolt probably had no difference... as long as it's the correct bolt. I don't know how backwards would be easier though lol! Probably makes it harder to reach with the nut around the front side tucked around the starter.

@@DuckmanCycles Short attention span impedes my listening abilities, had no idea a distributor could be used wrong. I know there are various types of distributors, like vacuum advance or electronic / thermal but generally they all work the same. I guess the points and the cam that activates them may be configured differently as far as gap and dwell but I’ve never heard of a distributor being configured for constant RPMs.
@DuckmanCycles
@DuckmanCycles Год назад
@@Mass-jab-death-2025 Yep, the 009 is a distributor is not intended for a lot of speed changes. They perform badly in a street driven car. There is a noticeable stumble or flat spot on acceleration, and the Chinese made ones today are even worse. The 019 and 010 that VW used previously on older cars was much better, they didn't have a vacuum advance either, but they had a better timing curve than a 009... nonetheless by the time the 034 came about it was a performance upgrade. There is no distributor that works better on a Volkswagen engine than a proper vacuum advance 034. Some people with certain carburetor setups don't have a vacuum advance port to connect to and often find themselves defaulting to a 009 because you can find them on the shelf just about anywhere. The answer for that is get better carburetors and use a 034 because a proper vintage 010 or 019 is going to set you back a lot of pennies and still wont perform as good. The only reason I keep a 009 around is for a spare backup distributor under the back seat. It might suck but it'll get me home and it's cheap for me, as I have a ton of them I've removed/replaced with a proper 034.

All VWs fog up, even with windshield defroster. We seasoned VW drivers keep a rag in the car for that reason... or a squeegee if we feel fancy! And the aluminum flex pipes are not easier. They break and come off without your knowledge and you repeat the problem we already have. They're not meant to be there, and they don't fit over those pipes properly.... again, this is experience.

But yeah, no engine/transmission removal is gonna scare me away, lol! Thanks man!

@@DuckmanCycles florida is extra humid but so is oklahoma like crazy humid. Kansas was not so humid as Okalhoma. in Kansas my bug had a great defroster and heat was able to run a guy out of there. the stations wagon bugs are pleaged with problems.

Oh yeah... you're right! The heat in my Fastback is 190°F coming out of the dashboard. WAYYY TOOO HOT! VWs having bad heat is a myth by people that don't properly maintain their heating system!
