Chai, I just want to say THANK YOU 🙏 for your awesome videos and the positive energy you bring to Cambodian and Thai audiences. It's disheartening to see negative comments, often fueled by irrational netizens with limited English proficiency, knowledge in the subject and influenced by harmful media. Here's what I want to address: Certain media outlets (or even skme political parties) might benefit from perpetuating this conflict. A solution is possible, but it requires time and commitment. Establishing a cultural committee with experts from Cambodia, Thailand, and relevant international organizations could address these issues systematically and peacefully. What Cambodians are trying to say is that Thailand didn't invent the word "Songkran" or the tradition itself. "Sankranti" is an Indian word with centuries of history in Khmer culture. The Khmer Empire moved its New Year celebration to the lunar month of Chetr (April) during the Angkor era for agricultural, weather, and astrological reasons. This may well predate the beginnings of Thai history, which could explain why some Cambodians feel Thailand "copied" the tradition, perhaps because of a lack of a more precise term such as "adapted". It's crucial to remember that this New Year tradition isn't exclusive to Cambodia or Thailand. Laos, Myanmar, and other countries share similar practices, each with unique variations. Pinpointing the exact origin is difficult. However, Thailand's government deserves credit for its excellent marketing - they've made Thailand synonymous with this beautiful tradition globally. Regarding "Choul Chnam Thmey" vs. "Songkran": "Maha Sangkran" specifically refers to the first day of the Khmer New Year, while "Choul Chnam Thmey" encompasses the entire three-day celebration. Cambodians use both terms, but "Choul Chnam Thmey" is typically used for its broader meaning. To my fellow Cambodians, let's acknowledge that if this tradition is a pizza, Italians invented pizza, but Thailand has the right to call their unique adaptation "Thai pizza." That's why UNESCO specifically recognized Songkran "in" Thailand. Let's enjoy our New Year tradition, celebrate our similarities, and respect our differences. Give respect, get respect. Peace!
Thank you for showing your appreciation and your well-educated explanation. I hope everyone will read this and understand your comment in detail. I could not explain it better. It is truly painful to see that my videos are sometimes used as a platform to argue. I hope my videos are more uniting than the other way around ❤️
Love Cambodia, Cambodians are the nicest people in the world based on my experience from traveling around the world. Do universal precautions when traveling whether you are in London, NYC, Paris, Rome, Bangkok, Tokyo, Phnom Penh…Just don’t believe in trolls… plan to retire in Phnom Penh… Happy New Year…From USA.
Happy new year naka
Water is for cleansing old year and powder is blessing of new year. Places to visit include Kratia ( rare fresh water dolphins), Mudokiri ( elephant adventure), Kep seafood market, Koh Rong Saleoum, 😊
😍So happy Chai, that you celebrate Khmer New Year, i love Cambodia since my first visit this year . Lovely people and they have a good spirit as well, Happy New Year to all❤🙏have a great feast !🎉🎉🌈💦💦
Great you tube video mate . Thanks for showing everyone a difference country. These days most you tubers mostly want to do you tube videos of Thailand . Great work chia .
I'm glad you come to celebrate with Khmer people. Khmer New year it's not all about playing water gun for the whole day like in Thailand. We have many many activities like going to Pagoda, playing traditional Khmer games, traditional Khmer dance during the day and around afternoon people will play water gun in specific location like Wat Phnom, or Pub street. ❤
How did you know that Thai always playing water gun? That just a part of Songkran, we have same root of culture of course we go to temple, we pay respect to our family and wish for our oldest ppl around of us, there are many choices to join and celebration. Its another level of festival time by time and earn money for good living life for Thai ppl. Poor your guy for ignorant information.
So I come to learn the origin of Khmer New Year or also known as Sangkranta: Moha Sangkranta (Khmer: មហាសង្រ្កាន្ត, Môha Sângkrantâ) or Sangkranta, derived from Sanskrit saṅkrānti, is the name of the first day of the new year celebration. It is the end of the year and the beginning of a new one.
(Sent to all Thai) The baby powder playing in Khmer New year , from the legend of Vishnu god born to Avatar baby Crisna celebration babay powder of blessed carved at Angkor wat wall 1122 AD , 12th century own version of Cambodia similar with Holi festival of India. Why Songkran Thai playing powder not know meanning ?
@@Chai_Travel I saw some Thai always comment Cambodia new year copy Thai culture Songkran to fools foreigners. Flower Shirts origin from Hawai island US call Aloha Shirts 1930s , Thai fools foreigners call Songkran shirts , why they never give credit to the owner !
Why do Cambodia chang New year Khmer name "Choul Chnam Thmey" to Song Kran same as Thailand? Previously 20years ago, Original Khmer new year doesn't have Water playing.
thank you so much for this video, i was busy working somehwere else during that time so now seeing this video makes me feel like i could still enjoy the holiday in siem reap. it means a lot to me. thanks.
Cambodia is mostly safe… I have been to Phnom Penh five times without any problems… just be careful not to go out at night with purse/ bag hanging out. Don’t show off jewelry and expensive things… safer than America, where I live…
Phnom Penh is fairly unless if you are stupid and drunk… been there multiple times… Happy Khmer new year… looking forward to more videos from Cambodia…
@@Nara-ou9zqPrime minister Hun sen just announced officially to rename from Chaul chnum thmey to Ankor Songran in Dec 2022. You can read from RFA.kmer (14 04 2023)❤That year he floated "kratong " in new name of Ankor Songkran celebration.😮 If Songran in Cambodia was celebrated for more than 2000 years ago, Why should Kmer prime minister to announce changing the name ?
@@DeedeeJ-yb4cm Maybe your brain has the problem. We don’t the name we call both Songran or chul Chhnam for long time before Thai was born. Angkor Songran the place for the big celebration of Songran In Angkor area.
UNESCO'S World Cultural Heritage- Songkran -Thai new year, we celebrate for 800 years. Cambodia never had Songkran, they've just invent the word Sankrati yesturday( in fact they try to claim Siam Songkran as their own ,but the world know who is the genuine Songkran festival.
Calm down bruh, why you so scare? everyone can use this world if we not allowed and then you UNESCO'S come and tell we stop it lol everyone have own culture we celebrate what we own too I didn't see the problem, what you should know is not this few word of New Years, just learn to improved yourself and know all the name of your ancestors first
Did UNESCO say to another country Don't use the word "songkran." I don't see UNESCO said that. You seem so scary, Just keep what you own; if it's your original, there's no need to care too much; everything is still in another country; they also have their own too. If we don't have the culture, We do it for what ?
I don’t know what to say. It’s not really my place to say anything about this situation. I hope everyone had a great new year and I wish everyone good health and prosperity 🙏
Chinese Wing chun... No .. Kalmar is Original Leatveal Berma ... No....Kalmar is Original Yong Chon ...Yipman No... Kalmar is Original Muaybolan by Tony jar No.. Kalmar is Original .... What Movie .... Kalmar is Original And starwar Avengers Vakanda Is Kalmar Original....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It would be better if you don't use Songkran about Khmer new year celebration. I have seen Thai and Cambodia people having cultural conflicts more than 10 years but this year is the first time that many Cambodia people using Songkran.
Aaa I see. I thought Songkran is the traditional new year celebration for Buddhist calendar widely celebrated across South and Southeast Asia in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, parts of northeast India, parts of Vietnam and China. I did use over and over Khmer New year for this video though:) I might have tried to say Sangkran once? 🙏 I’m very happy to celebrate anywhere in South East Asia
@@Chai_Travel I think that it should be called Khmer New Year or Choul Chnam Thmey. As a Thai, we don't use Sangkran so, you can call it. Moreover, I found out the Khmer New Year information reviewed in 2008 on EthnoMed website. The writer wrote about MohaSangkran but Songkran wasn't written in there.
In Cambodia we say Chol chnam thmey mean in English New Year and the word Sangkran is Sanskrit word. So use as you like. And in Cambodia the word Sangkran on the wall of Temple is in Year 910. I saw Thai start to claim this word Songkran 😂 It original from Sanskrit (India). Hope you understand, don’t mind and enjoy!!
Cambodia first acording from Cambodia national document, Khmer new year start celebration water throwing during King Suryavarman I of Khmer empire found Emerald Buddha from Sri Lanka he start celebration washing the Buddha Statue in 1040 AD, 11th century. Cambodia playing water throwing during new year acording from French 1890 AD untill Cambodia civil war 1973-1997, water throwing low little bit playing and resumed playing 2000s and some location water throwing baned by official 2008-2015 Cambodia politic crisis.
@Sastrakhmer Cambodia national document contain fake story which your goverment want to fool you. Let stop telling the fake story to the world. @Chai_Travel May I unsubscrbe your Channel. Don't want to see the pop up video while you are in this country 👋
Hey Chai, I would like to update you on general safety situation in Cambodia now, especially in Phnom Penh. Petty Crimes were so pretty rampant several years ago especially bag snatching, but in the last year or so it has been reduced significantly. Government and police has taken drastic measure in reducing this. Traffic problem may be still an issue especially at late night caused by drunk drivers but Government has taken various measures to reduce it as well. I believe in our new government and they are working so hard on this with collectively collaboration from our people and stakeholders. Serious crime such as murder, rape or kidnapping are extremely rare.
Hi hi, thank you for your comment 🙏 I hope we will see this continue to improvement over the coming year :) I really love it here. Phnom Penh I love too (even though saw someone getting his phone snitched last year during day light at the river side). This was only one incident last year. I'm happy to go back soon again. I never felt unsafe in PP.
@@cover2556all of Thailand was once a colony of the Khmer Empire. The people who are living in Thailand today are a colonized people that the Siamese stole since thr 12 century. “Thai” is only a nationality, not an ethnicity. All the people who live in Thailand are a colonized people who have turned into “Thai” and now they have forgotten who there real ancestors are.
Thanks mate Chai for another interesting video. I didn't know that the water festival is also celebrated in other Asian countries. Interesting fact. 👍Cambodia has among its vestiges having been governed with an iron fist by the Dictator Pol Pot who by the way died on April 15.😒
There is a word songkran in the 1000 years old angkor wat in Siem reap and Thailand only existed for 800 years so the word songkran is used earlier than in thailand
@@Chai_Travel oh… ❤️ sorry 😣 put it under the wrong comment threads. It was meant to be for another rude comment that said Thailand is a thief because they had somehow stolen Cambodia water festival. So we were thinking how can happiness from joyful celebrations inside a person heart be stolen and pity this person. Apology.
@user-ps6fk5cd8b thanks. I hope both Cambodia and Thailand will feel more united in the future. The people are truly amazing. There is only a very small group who are stirring things up🙏
I agree, i did Songkran, everyone was happy, smiling, even some apologize for throw water. General happiness. Back Europe everyone will be angry, fighting, stressed, thinking to taxes, past future etc, not living present. See the differences.
I see first guy said thai is celebrate for 800 yeah, even Thailand just born at 1300+AC, i don't know what history have they learnt but i feel bad for thai people. Live in the developed country but has no the real history for they people, Cambodia is born since 0AC it older than Thailand almost 1300 year, only thing make me hurt when I they said Cambodia is copy and Thailand is the real owner and they trying lie to the world with no reason, keep it thai someday you gonna know it
Thai people always bite on Cambodia when someone talks about Cambodia; they always tell tourists that Cambodia is bad...while tourists are visiting Thailand, so don't mind them.
Luckily it’s the minority and most Thai people I meet and talk to are very friendly also towards Thailand. Some Khmer people are talking bad about Thai people but likely this is also a minority.
@@Chai_Travel These group of Thais love watching Cambodian videos then jump out of their chairs and make a big deal out of Khmer little mistakes then report and sent it to Thai news so they can throw a party and have a nice laughs 😂😂
Cambodia has been splashing water before Thailand was even born. You mean to tell me that the hottest country in the world Khmer people only play hide and seek?
Its better than Songrakn wc is a copycat from Khmer. Thailand always copy Cambodia but they end up popularizing it since Thailand is more develop than Cambodia. Songkran is a cambodian word.
Where is your Chol Chnum Thmey? 😂😂😂😂 Songkran is famous Thai festival everyone know except Claimbodians.Because they are jealous and want to follow Thailand in everything. Thailand is often successful in promoting its culture while Cambodia is largely ignored. I feel sorry for and sympathize with those of you who try to create lies about foreigners to get the world's attention. But I'm sorry... people. The world is not as stupid as Khmer people. Today's Khmer are only fools people because all the smart people have been killed by Pol Pot.
@@Chai_Travel You deleted my comment. But did not delete the comments that created fake news about this Cambodian person. But you said you respect both Thailand and Cambodia. Should you be ashamed of your heart?

Claimbodia Just change the name to Songkrant in 2022 Why does claimbodia have a 2 name in 1 happens. Stop to make a fake story. And Songkrant script is locate in Thailand. This script do not explain how to play Songkrant. It explains the time is became changed a year only. Not talk to play water, not talk to do a activity.
Thailand promotes Thai culture until it is famous all over the world, such as Thai costumes, Songkran, Loi Krathong, Muay Thai, Thai food, until the foreigners come to visit Thailand is number one in the world. The Cambodia thought of claiming Thai culture as their own. Thinking that if foreigners understand that Thai culture belongs to Cambodia. It will make foreigners come to visit Cambodia instead Thailand and Cambodia will have a lot of income coming into Cambodia. For example, Water festivals in Cambodia has been called “Chol Chanam Thmey “ for a long time, but Cambodia just changed the name Chol Chanam Thmey to the name of Songkran like Thailand in 2023. and about costume ever since past to 2018 real traditional costume of Cambodia is Sompot Dress after Cambodian watch Buppasanivas Drama Thai in 2018, Cambodia changed Sompot to Thai Dress and said Thai dress belong to Cambodia, Thai copy Cambodia
