A dishwasher is an extreme environment for microorganisms, still many of them have adapted and are able to thrive there. I am going to have a look at some of the bacteria and fungi that I found in the biofilm of a dishwasher and then I will give some possible recommendations on how to reduce the bacterial load.

Ughh.. I've always been grossed out by kitchen washing utensils. You should check out water from a well-used kitchen sponge under the microscope.

What a happenstance, I've just cleaned the dishwasher last night and replaced the month-old kitchen scrub. As always, this was informative and helpful. Thank you! And I will keep your suggestion about what microscope-brands to possibly buy for my niece.

The one thing that helped a lot is keeping the door open when not in use. It reduces humidity. Never had a smelly dishwasher since then. Also every 3 to 6 months I use dishwasher machine cleaner, which is even more effective removing grease, etc. out of the pipes.

Sir, you shouldn't need to prewash your dishes in the sink. That is what the machine is for. You should have a prewash setting on the machine. It should be able to flush all of the food away really well. The can be released after the prewash water is gone. If you tell me the brand and the model number of your machine, then I could try to find an owners manual.

I use those dishwasher cleaning cartridge things that you put in and then you run a hot program, at least it leaves everything shiny clean and unclogs the filter.

After looking at ArchanelExile's post, I tried washing a ceramic dish with a "greeny" kitchen sponge. Needless to say, the "Greeny" lost the battle, and I had to resort to all manner of "grandma's abrasives" to get the dish clean.

What about using white vinegar and run empty dishwasher?

Vinegar is only a weak acid and it cleans only a little. But I am surprised how often it is mentioned as a cleaner. A toilet cleaner is more effective.

I have the water feed line to my dishwasher coming from the SDS pump on my Millipore Exlix 100. That helps keep the bacteria down.

There aren't anywhere near dangerous amounts of bacteria on the cleaned dishes and your advice just unnecessarily makes the dishwasher use more water than cleaning the dishes by hand, whereas usually it's the other way round. 🙄
