Voigtlander killing it recently. I currently have the 50 APO and 28 Ultron ASPH for my M10-R. Great price to performance ratio. Will be adding this next year along with the recently announced 50 f/1.0 ASPH

Matt, this is the best Christmas gift of 2021. Fine B&W photographs made in the snow in Poland. The VOIGTLÄNDER APO SKOPAR 1 : 2,8 - 90 is a must. With a Kodak Tri-X it will make the analog Leica CL a super camera.

For many years a 90mm Lens was my "normal" Lens which I used a lot, but for the last 5 to 10 years my most used Lenses are 60mm and 135mm, sort of "back to the future" as I used the 135mm when I began as a Photographer in 1979. I still have my trusty Tamron SP 90mm 2.5 Adaptall-2 which I sometimes use. But I have been looking at the Leica M 90mm Macro because it is so compact.

Plenty of great shots, and a solid review of the lens. I just bought a Summarit 90 in mint condition for less than £1.000. It's a perfect lens in a three lens setup,( 28-50-90). Keep on rolling!

Yes please, give the Hasselblad SWC a review. I like the Hasselblad SWC a lot though I do not like rangefinder cameras, I wish for a modern digital version with a very good EVF. I have used the SWC, but for myself I got the Zeiss Distagon 50mm 2.8 (Excellent Lens !!!) for the Hasselblad 2000FC which worked best for me.

Nice images; remind me the memorable time my family spent in Gdansk right before its lockdown in April 2020. Those lions must had been covered by the snow. As for the Leica 90 mm, I think the tele-Elmarit (thin version) is a bargain.

I liked your observations on this lens. I owned at one time a 90mm f2 Summicron that I sold mainly, despite having been CLA'd over by DAG to get it as good as it could be, still seemed to lose contrast at f5.6-f8. I suspect it was due to worn aperture blades. I am seriously considering this lens as I like the filter size the lens has. This will work well with my 35mm and 50mm summicrons I owned. Judging from your tests, I expect it to be very good. Thanks for the review!

Another tempting review, but I just got the vintage Elmar 9cm f4 in perfect condition including a hood for €90 😊. I think I was lucky with an unnoticed auction on ebay. I have an older LTM version without hood, but it flares so much. The "new" M version is perfect. But still, I saw the Voigtländer for €699,- not bad at all

Thank you! I did not have all APO lenses at the same time to compare. I think the 35 and 50 are probably slightly sharper at f2.8 but all amazing stopped down a bit.

The TTA is much softer. Can’t compare. If want sharp/ resolution/ calibrated get Voigtlander. For soft dreamy look and for non-M body get TTA (I’m not anti TTA, I’m testing a lens now and it’s great, video to follow)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom , I wonder if you experienced the same phenomena Jack Takahashi noted in his review... "My review copy did not focus correctly on my M10 (it frontfocused especially at longer distances). Fred Miranda states in his review that he tried three different copies, none of which were calibrated right on his M10-R. Other people have posted about similar problems on forums. Given this, many would conclude the following: Voigtlander is doing a bad job at calibrating these lenses, and they should be avoided. However, I tried my review copy on two different M11 cameras at the Leica store, and it appeared to focus perfectly on both. This, to me, suggests another possibility: There is significant variation between camera bodies in flange distance and/or rangefinder calibration. Voigtlander is making this lens properly, but unfortunately it may or may not focus accurately on a specific camera body depending on this variation. To get even more conjectural, it could also be that the M11 is more accurately calibrated than previous models, and that’s why my lens worked well on the M11 but not my M10" Thanks, Matt!

Hi, sorry i'm a bit behind on comments.. i've never noticed a problem with the EVF. You can use PAS mode to see in the dark anyway so it woould never be an issue.

Hi Billy, I fell for the same "trap" and ending up getting the lens too :) ..too good not to have. I don't use lens profiles as i'm used to shooting film. You could try the closest lens listed, a 90mm f2.8 Elmarit (should be on there without looking).

Putting cost aside, I assume you would still go for the Voigtlander over the Leica 90mm Macro Elmar since you note it is sharper than the Leica? I am looking for a small, optically excellent 90mm to go with my M11 for travel and general use, and was planning on the Macro Elmar, but now the Voigtlander seems like it would be a better choice. I prefer the smaller size of the Macro Elmar but you have to extend it anyway to use it, and if the Voigtlander is sharper I would prefer it, especially with the 60mp of the M11...

As you may have noticed I am going back in your video series to watch some older stuff I am interested in and I really dig your channel. I love your city B/W of this video and your editing (I am not a preset kinda person, I rather edit every shot from scratch although a patter is often to be seen) . Since 2015 I am in Capture One camp cause LR heavily disappointed me and although they manage to update LR to a more acceptable RAW convertor for the present time, it is still not my cup of tea anymore (e.g. LAYERS ??). The images are really creating a mood fitted to the old city, beautiful. I also like your taste of models (just for photography that is, although the eastern woman facial expression is sometimes very obvious ) . I have been to your site to look at the portrait shots with this lens but the skin of those woman scared the hell out of me. Female skin should not be in focus to mitigate the natural unevennesses . Have you gone wild on clarity. Allow me to advice you to go to Peter Coulsons channel and look how proper B/W facial editing should be done. There is a lot to lear there for everybody. Anyways, great review from this affordable lens, like always. IMO Voigtlander can be happy with your reviews and vision. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks RS. Yes great lens and thanks re city shots. The weather helped. Yes I open images in PS to use layers if I want to edit something to post to say Flickr etc. I don’t retouch the skin unless obviously blemishes so it won’t look airbrushed like others might do. I quite like pores on the skin but I know everyone has their preference. (Mine probably comes from shooting film, I’m not going to blur the nice film grains if I shoot a girl on film)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I ended up buying this lens and I did not regret. Focusing on stationary subjects are not that difficult at all and the rendering is quite outstanding. Even sharpness wide open is on par with my Sony GM lenses. Of yourse moving subjects are a different story... so I admire your portrait and model shots even more now.

I’m enjoying the Voigtländer 90. As compared to my Leica Pre APO Summicron 90 it’s much lighter and sharper but lack the Summicron magic.

One of my favorite 90mm lens is the Leica 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit R. I don't know if it's the same optical formula as the M version, although I doubt it since the R version is a retro focus design. It's very contrasty with gorgeous colors. My other 90mm lens is a Leitz-Minolta M-Rokkor 90mm f/4. It's a dandy little lens. Thanks for this video. The 90mm focal length for M cameras too often gets over looked. And my final 90mm lens is a pre-war 90mm f/4 Elmar. I bought it a few months ago for US$125. I haven't shot with it yet but it's a beautiful specimen of early vintage Leica.

The Nikon version looks so much smaller because the flange is longer. The VM version is the same, just with the added "spacer" to use it on a "mirrorless" camera, and rangefinder coupling.

Can you compare this lens to the Voigtlander 75mm f1.5 ? For B&W APO isn't a big issue. Its a 350g lens takes a 58mm filter, costs $1,000 USD. Its almost 2 F- stops faster. I would think shallow DOF would be better with this lens. Got excellent B&H owner reviews on both film and digital cameras, including CL where its 112mm FOV.

For portraits the 75 easily wins. I have since got that lens for myself after testing it a year ago. Very good lens and see the cover photo of that video. That answers your DOF question! :) I will use on M, SL and CL + S5.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom In the review you said you would not buy the lens since your mind sees in 50mm. I often say the same "not another lens" and then I cannot stop myself from ordering just another lens. They call that GAS it gets us all. Will the Voigtlander 90mm f/2.8 Apo-Skopar work properly on a Sony a7 series camera (E mount) when an adapter is used? Because Sony uses sensor stacking, will there be any image degradation (e.g., smearing, coma, vignetting, and astigmatism) in the corners at maximum aperture? Thanks?

Hi Matt, I’m very interested in buying this 90mm lens for close up wild flower photography for an ethereal soft bokeh look. If it produces more compression in DX mode (135mm FoV) that would be great. I was interested to hear you say this lens (or any lens) shows more compression on APS-C cameras than on full frame. I have a Nikon Z 7 (full frame) which has a DX mode whereby the Field of View is limited to the centre areas of a lens and halving the resolution of the sensor. Is this the same photo effect as shooting on an APS-C camera? I haven’t used the DX mode yet but I thought I understood that although the DX mode would limit the field of view thereby magnifying the image on the sensor, the compression wouldn’t change because the optics of the lens would be the same in both cases. Have I got the wrong end of the stick here? Many thanks.

Hi Christian, DX mode means crop in camera rather than crop on computer. Both give identical look. APS-C does the same but as no extra cropping you retain all 24mp say (vs. 50% crop results in giving 12 MP photos as comparison. I hope that helps! Matt

I'd like to think the Leica APO is better and f2 gives nicer portrait DOF. I use the older Cron 90 f2 Pre-ASPH which is even better for portraits.

Hi Matt, I don’t normally ask questions but I’m pulling my hair out, what hair I have left anyway. So here’s my question I just purchased said lens on this video for the Leica SL, but I can’t get focus peaking to work with it. It works with my AF sigma 45mm. Is there something I need to do or doesn’t it work with the Voightlander. Love the videos by the way

I have a leica 90mm f2.5 summarit, don’t understand why it doesn’t get noticed. It’s fast for a 90, it’s very small and compact, the images are very sharp. It’s hard to focus but not a show stopper, and the price for Leica lens…can’t be beat. Some of my personal best portraits are with this lens.

@@williaminbody205 I don't know why you would say that because I've read many reviews of all of the Summarit lenses from various sources & they all praised the Leica Summarit 35, 50, 75 & 90mm lenses favourably. The only criticism was that the build quality wasn't quite up to the standards of the higher priced Leica lenses. I own a Leica-M Summarit 35mm f2.4 ASPH lens & I think it's very good lens indeed. it's a shame that Leica stopped making them.

Hi Chris, easily the 75mm 1.5. Combine the length x aperture x MFD if ever trying to estimate (not literally but those 3 combined). Yes 1.5 is a big step up vs. 1.25

6:13 Mounting a full-frame lens on a crop body does not give you more compression; all it does is give you a narrower angle of view. As far as compression goes, a 90mm stays a 90mm no matter the sensor size.

@@MrAlb3rtazzo Compression is a measure of the apparent distance between foreground and background (and can altered *only* by changing camera to subject distance). Angle of view is a measure of how much fits in your frame at a given distance (and can be altered either by changing focal length or by changing sensor size).

My point then is that mounting a full-frame lens (90mm or whatever) on a crop body does *not* make the background appear larger (relative to foreground/subject); you just *see* less of it, bc less fits in the frame, due to the crop factor. (What *would* make the background appear larger relative to foreground/subject would be an increase in camera to subject distance while holding the distance between subject and background fixed.)

Yes please, give the Hasselblad SWC a review. I like the Hasselblad SWC a lot though I do not like rangefinder cameras, I wish for a modern digital version with a very good EVF. I have used the SWC, but for myself I got the Zeiss Distagon 50mm 2.8 (Excellent Lens !!!) for the Hasselblad 2000FC which worked best for me.

I briefly owned this lens in Nikon mount...... same glass? I don’t know. But I didn’t like it at all. Lots of vignetting, ugly bokeh, not overly sharp.
