In this Chemistry video in Hindi we explained electronic configuration of elements and it's role in the modern periodic table. According to the highest energy level electron the periodic table is divided into four blocks, viz., s-block, p-block, d-block and f-block.
s-block - the highest energy electron fills the s orbital.
p-block - the highest energy electron fills the p orbital.
d-block - the highest energy electron fills the d orbital.
f-block - the highest energy electron fills the f orbital.
s and p block elements are known as the representative elements or the main group elements. The d- block elements are called the transition elements and the f-block elements are called the inner transition elements.
We also discussed on some special groups. Group 1 and 2 are chemically very active, because they have very low ionization enthalpy and hence, they loose electron very easily. They are called alkali metals and alkaline earth metals respectively. Group 18 is chemically inactive and those elements are called the inert gases or the noble gases. Group 17 elements are also chemically very active, because they have very high negative electron gain enthalpy and hence, they can accept electron very easily. Those elements are known as the halogens and the group 16 elements are called the chalcogens.
