Just a small correction. In India, there is an obsession with gold. In fact, India has a midnight gold buying festival, held just before Diwali, called Dhanteras where people from all walks of life buy some gold. Indian household gold is one of the highest, if not the highest, in the world. Having said that, Alasdair MacLeod is a joy to listen to. I learn so much every time I hear him.

The BRICS new global trading system involves trading tangible goods and/or resources for the same. That also means gold becomes part of trade. The days of fiat funny money empires printing their toilet paper currency and wanting other nations to give up their goods for such worthless toilet paper money is coming to an end. This is really bad news for the USA,UK and EU which have no resources and very little manufacturing and very expensive labor and energy, they are completely doomed if they dont radically change to become competitive.

With true inflation (as measured by 1992) we already have stagflation. Prices go up and GDP goes down. And tge unemployment statistics are a joke, unemployment is way higher and rising.

They gave the loans to the useless companies. They should have given loans on income producing assets that assist the economy and the population. The banking system is not a problem the choosing winners and loosers is the problem. Instead of sending 300 billion to Ukraine, what would have happened if US went on a adventure of rebuilding the infrastructure ? what would have happened that America called back all of its soldiers to work on the construction projects increasing the value and GDP.

I em Not Alasdair but I can tell you you don't need any other currency to replace the dollar the New BRICS currency will be backed by Gold 60 % or 40 % it will be currency for trade settlement . And countries can trade between them in their own currency just like Russia and China do all trades settled in Rubles and China's Yuan . You think everybody Needs dollars just because you are used to it.. Before the US Dollar century ago British pound. Was Reserve currency long before that Spanish money were Reserve currency. Really you don't need Reserve n currency or Gold is the BEST Reserve currency 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

It could be in Saudi Arabia and China's interest because they are in export surplus account. All the other Tin pot countries will not last long buying gold to settle account. A gold-backed currency requires all members to run their countries in a responsibly financial manner. A pipe dream.

8:38 …. That isn’t how the ECB works - it is independent from the EU Commission and Parliament and not beholden to nation states - ie if it wants to print the money it can just do it. This is why Brexit works for the Brits - they’ll be less screwed when SHTF outside the EU than in.

I am not convinced that a fiat currency is as bad as people who have an invested interest in gold claim it to be. I could argue it can unlock wealth that a gold back currency can't. The value of a currency is really based more on perception and supply/demand than it is on if its backed by a commodity.
