Matt. Even though,i am a retired Pro. Started back in 1970s, obviously film. 35mm,2 1/4, 4X5. I have down-sized to just the Leica M camera, for obvious reasons, mostly size and weight. Thank you for doing all the hard work,so we can make a educated purchase. Especially with the Digital cameras, which i will probably never get used to. Thanks again.

I replaced my CV 35/1.4 Nocton with a 35/2 Ultron II and very happy with the switch. To me size does matter with my M camera as I like it to be small and compact since the M10 and CV 35/2 Ultron II is always with me when out and about... Another great video Matt, Thanks again.

I would also consider the Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 in the group of lenses you mention here. It focuses down to 0.5m, and at F1.2 that means loads of delicious bokeh!😄

I am glad Matt that you mentioned the problem of mounting lenses that jave been designed for the Leica M system, by using Sony cameras in particular and an adapter to other Mirrorless cameras. Sonys have a very thick glass filter on top the sensor that plays havoc with the midd frame to edge definition of the lens. Best use the lens for the camera it was designed for, I say.

Excellent and practical review, especially when comparing to the alternative lenses. One thing which I was hoping would be in this part (had been mentioned in the comments for Part 1) was how well the zone focusing features worked (with the old school depth of field scale). Were you zone focusing for the “shoot from the hip” photos ?
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Michael! Yes you can use the DOF scale to zone focus. I think I dialed in like 3m when I did it. I find the normal lines much easier to see but that's just me.

I have 2 35mm lenses , Zeiss you showed , yes heavy , and the Ultron 35 1.7 ; I love my Ultron 35mm in Brass with Brass hood , so beautifully smooth a pleasure in imaging and in the hand. You should test that 1.7 35mm ULTRON Matt , once held you will be in deep love. My desired Leica is the Bokeh King 35mm Pre Asph that is the only 35mm I need yet. Lovely place Valencia Spain .... I love the stone and architecture. Beautiful.

There is a Voigtlander 35 mm 1.4 for the same price. The old one you have tested years ago. They are razor sharp. Don't know if it is a real upgrade. Thanks for sharing though

Thanks Rob, yes I mention at the end. It’s not sharp but it’s small. I sold mine and replaced with f2 Ultron which is much sharper. It was my softest Voigtlander 35 of 1.2, 1.7, 2, 2.5.. I used it fir years before that quite happily and on film too

You noted the CV 35/1.5 as a potential alternative, but made no comment/comparison about it... haven't tried, or just didn't like? I'm curious because I have the CV 35/1.5, so would have made a good reference point. My biggest dislike about the CV is in how it handles shooting into the light, but the Thypoc seems much worse! Also, re the Thypoc's highlight halation/glow... does this go away when stopped down? I like this effect sometimes, but not ALL the time... Did you have any issues with the handling of the Thypoc? Another reviewer noted that the trick DOF scale uses up so much space on the lens barrel that the focusing ring had to be made skinny and pushed back toward the body; he found it difficult to grasp, and he hated the infinity lock. Anyway, thanks for all the work you put into evaluating this lens so thoroughly, and am looking forward to seeing something similar about the 28/1.4...
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 6 месяцев назад
Thanks James, yes I didn't really bond with the CV 35mm 1.5 (See that video). As such I overlook it now I think. I's expect the Thypoch to be sharper wide open but just a guess and not sure about the light. I was happy with the handling. I get stressed less about such things if it works. I'd prefer it half the size but otherwise no complaints.

So is this Thypoch Simera 35/1.4 as good as the Voigtländer Ultron II 35/2 , which is a great lens btw? It looks interesting Matt, but at the same time, it's not a small lens. I prefer smaller lenses.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks - I watched the main review on the 35.5 but it seems like it has disappeared as a comparator in the recent 35 videos. (maybe b/c you don't like it, although your review seemed overall positive) Given it is increasingly becoming a more sought after "upgrade" from the 35.4 classic (especially the V1 being very light) - would love it being revisited or at least being included in the comparison - just a suggestion

Think of cameras as being the same for any M lens. Some cameras are known to be poor like Sony, my S5 seems nearly as good as the SL which is nearly as good as M cameras. General rule. Haven’t used this lens on these cameras*

Hi Oliver, if you're a regular viewer hopefully you know the answer to that question. I try to keep this videos shorter and mostly info but I should have included, "they sent me this lens to test but it's my own opinions given". No they don't pay. Like other brands they just push out new products to all the influencers and ask them to make a review to help with the launch).

@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 6 месяцев назад
Possibly as it’s not overly heavy. Pretty sure it contains brass too as I know how light pure alu lenses are and it’s not that. 300+g means some brass I think. It’s nice and smooth like any good lens.

I have nothing to say about this lens. Just wanted to say this is the only photography channel where I’m not banned. Very proud of that fact. 😅 Edit: I just saw some people taking about the Nokton II 35. Yea I’ve been really happy with it. Not as smooth to focus as my Summicron, but it doesn’t matter where I point it, I get this dreamy soft but sharp look, even closed down depending on the light. It’s a beautiful lens. It’s so tiny and light it makes the camera tilt back when it’s hanging on the strap.
