Hi All,
I picked up the Leica 35mm f1.4 Summilux ASPH non FLE about 6 weeks ago now and in todays video I want to give an initial impressions review along with my thoughts on how this lens fits in my lens collection alongside the 28mm Elmarit and the 50mm Summilix.
The images are a mixture of me experimenting over the course of the last few weeks ending on a day trip to London.

Congrats on an AMAZING deal! That definitely was a crazy bargain for both lenses! You made some good points about the single 35mm vs the 28/50 combo. I think the decision comes down to how one goes about shooting. For example, I like to go out with a single focal length because I find it easier to “get in the groove” with that focal length for the outing. I find that after a few minutes knowing I only have that one FL makes me look for more in that field of view. I do get the occasional moment where I wish i had something else but like you mentioned… I accept that that’s where I break out my phone if it’s a must have shot. Modern phones are very capable and if I would have had time to swap lenses to still get a shot then I can take the time to fidget with the phone to compose it properly as well. And I agree whole heartedly about the 35 Lux (and it’s the same with the FLE). Wide open, it has a lot of character (read: flaws) while still being pretty sharp but when you stop it down it’s very modern looking. I upgraded from the 35 Summicron ASPH and that’s exactly what I noticed as the major rendering difference.

When I first bought an M, it was coupled with a 50 'Lux. That said, I thought I was a 50mm shooter right up until I got the Summilux-M 35mm F/1.4 ASPH FLE. It's a wonderful focal length, and with all that microcontrast it really gives you that Leica look. Great video - Those shots are phenomenal!

Nice. I recently picked up this lens and was super impressed. I do think 35mm is the perfect one camera, one lens focal length. I think Leica also knows that the 28-50mm focal length is the sweet spot on their cameras and was probably the inspiration for their Tri Elmar-M 28-35-50.

I think the perfect kit is 24Elmar and 35LuxFLE. They share the same metal hood and filters. And I think they are some of the absolute top preference lenses from Leica.

The more I get outside, the less, and less I use the 28mm. Over the last 3 months I've almost exclusively been using my 35mm and the 50mm. Then, when I shoot indoors I pair the 28mm and the 35mm. On big trips, I carry 2 cameras on me, 1 with the 50mm and the other with either the 28 or the 35 and i swap the unused as needed. (Typically just carry it in my jacket pocket.) I'm Time will tell, how you mix and match, but you'll also notice that where you shoot makes the biggest difference in what you bring along.

I love how this lens reacts in strong sunshine, the flare is beautiful. I had the pre FLE and now the FLE and both were the same in this regard.

Same with the 50 lux too! They both have a red flair that looks awesome!

As a Leica user for more than 20 years now I agree on this one. The 35 Lux Pre fle has the most beautiful rendering. I owned two of them and focus shift was never an issue (no misfocus in real life). I like the close focus of the latest 35 better though and so this is the lens to rule them all 😀

Oh you bought my favourite 35mm! This lens has magical rendering and I completely love it. My focus shifts a little bit but I have learned to compensate for it at those fstops. If yours doesn't shift then DON'T sell it. ;)

A local Danish press photographer had a very special choice of lenses for his Leica M3: a 35 and a 90 mm. That was all. I'm not a 35 mm guy, I prefer as wide angel the Elmar-M 3.8/24. The 35 mm is to close to the 50 mm and who can live without a LUX 50? I can't. More than 80% of my press photography is shot with a 50. This said, your video was good tho watch. Keep on rolling!

I was a 50mm guy for like forever but the 35 summilux turned me. If I now take just one camera and lens it's the 35. The 50 and the 35 are quite close together but still so very different! Enjoy your 35, you made a nice catch :)

But again, it's pleasure to hear you on my earphones. I mean I put your video on, go do something else around the house while clearly hearing your opinion/comments on directly on my ears. then, I just come back eventualy and see the video for the second time, this time taking full attention to it. Thanks for the video. I can use the 50mm or the 35mm for my one camera/one lens solution. However, I prefer a three-lens solution. For a three-lens solution with my Nikon SLR, I usually flank my 50mm f/1.4 with a 24mm f/2, and a 105mm f/2.5. For a three-lens solution with my Leica rangefinder, I usually flank my 35mm f/1.4 with a 21mm f/1.4 and a 90mm f/2.

I've never been able to get along with a 35mm lens. It's too short for "normal" and too long for "wide." With a Leica M the 28 and 50 is, for me, the ideal setup. If I insisted on a single lens/Leica camera, I'd use a Q2!
@Eliehbk

What’s your take on both 50mm and 35mm lenses if you were equally fond of both focal lengths? I have the 50mm Summilux black chrome and have the chance to trade it with a 35mm FLE? Thanks an dkeep up the good work!
@Goughie
@Goughie Год назад
As a one lens solution I think I prefer 35mm, but as a two lens solution I think 28mm and 50mm are hard to beat. I think for me that ends up being the decider
@christopherrodriguez7223

Man, I was shooting with my 35 the last two weeks and it was a little too tight for me and I would have preferred the 28mm for my usage. Not Leica line, but on the Voigtlander side. So off it goes.
@Goughie

I always have mixed feelings over 28mm and 35mm! Maybe a 28mm and high megapixel is the answer for a bit of cropping

Been secretly eyeballing Leica’s with Summilux lenses for years, but I’m just a humble casual shooter and not worthy of the investment. Wonderful images, Goughie, indeed they have a paintlike quality to them. Is this pretty much the SOOC output, or is it also post-processing which gets you these gorgeous results?
@Goughie

@carlosmcse

For me it would be a 50mm. My problem with the Summilux is they’re too big. I think they have character. All lenses have character. But you can have a sort of modern more clinical character or an imperfect charming character. For me I feel the Summicron is the perfect compromise.
@perfectly_boring

The FLE is amazing (and I suspect the pre-FLE as well), but I wouldn't mind if I was forced to use only my 28cron and 50lux. Since you shoot digital, you could get away with selling your elmarit and 35mm lux for the 28mm cron

Sure you've considered selling the 35 and 28 for a 28 summilux. :)
@Goughie
@Goughie Год назад
Thought about it! Recently I tried the 28mm f1.4 7Artisans, and that confirmed that i don’t really have much use in a fast 28mm, I quite like having the tiny Elmarit as most of the time I’m shooting 28mm I want the background in the image, and with my M10 I can push the ISO a little! If I was only shooting film I’d definitely consider it!

Depends on what I’m doing tbh! Not all that much really, unless it’s something street/documentary and fast moving
@JJ_Photo
@JJ_Photo Год назад
It's all personal taste of course. For me a 50mm just is too "tele like" for street. Look at the image at 6:06 . Doesn't work for me at all. You have to be close to get - close. Again just an opinion. For portraits and much other stuff, a 50mm is great. Btw, we will have to see how the new Voigtlander 35mm f/1.5 Nokton performs. Maybe it will be fine for us with not that much money. I have the Voigtlander 35mm Ultron II. Somehow it renders better than the Leica Summicron for me. And sharper wide open.
