🎵Drop 2 chord shapes don't have to be difficult to understand. Most explanations start with how a drop 2 chord shape is formed by dropping one or two notes from another chord shape. This is great for pianists but I don't think its overly helpful for guitarists. In today's video I break them down as follows:
🔴 The difference between drop 2, drop 3 and drop 2 and 4.
🔴 The drop 2 shapes in the key of C
🔴 Suggestions on how to practice these shapes in key.

Boy, am I glad this just showed up in my feed. I've always been confused by drop 2 and drop 3 voicings, but you have greatly improved my understanding of them and expanded my knowledge of the guitar. Thanks!

@@jazzguitarwithandy I'm from California born and raised but I have lived in hot and beautiful l Mexico and Costa Rica. Nothing like the weather all year round here in California! I gather that you live in the UK? I have been to London! My favorite city in Europe!

@ I love California. The weather and the guitar shops! I like driving in the desert too. Yes, I’m in the South West of England. Our California is Cornwall, which is a fantastic place to unwind.

You said Drop 2 means "chord voicings on adjacent strings". It is my understanding that Drop 2 meant the second note of the chord is in the bass as opposed to the root. Could you clear that up for me? "Drop 2 chords are seventh chords that are built by dropping the second highest note of a closed position chord down one octave, making that note the bass note of the chord." Thanks. Subscribed.

_ Hey, thanks for the comment and question. You've got some conflicting things in what you've written. 'It is my understanding that Drop 2 meant the second note of the chord is in the bass as opposed to the root.' It is the second highest note of the chord that moves. Eg, take CEGB and the G drops. There are four inversions, so you get the root, 3rd, 5th and 7th in the bass in the different inversions. "Drop 2 chords are seventh chords that are built by dropping the second highest note of a closed position chord down one octave, making that note the bass note of the chord." - this is correct Personally, I don't find those explanations very helpful for playing drop shapes on guitar. I think for a pianist those explanations are clear as day. On the guitar I find it most helpful to think about how the shapes fall on the fretboard, this for me makes it easier to organise and remember them. For guitar the easiest way to think about the drop shapes is as follows: Drop 2: on adjacent stings (EADG, ADGB and DGBE) Drop 3: Skip a string between the bass note and 2nd voice (EDGB and AGBE) Drop 2 and 4: on string pairs (EAGB and. ADBE) Hopefully that clears things up?

Highly useful lesson! Thank you, Andy. Is it a typo on the Drop 2 Exercises in C pdf, that in Ex.1b, the last CMaj7 has a double high B, when it should also have a C (on the staff and in the tab)?

Thanks for spotting that, I'll get that fixed. It is indeed a typo.

Hi Andy, another great lesson here! I have become pretty comfortable with drop 2 and 3 chords but not really used the inversion forms much. Your lesson here will be very helpful for me to add those chord forms to my chord shape options. The other eye opener for me was the Minor 7 to Major 6 equivalency (D min 7 to F maj 6 and others) I tend to use a lot of Major 6 chord voicing for the 1 chord so this may open up more options for me there. Your PDF’s on this are very informative and will make practicing easier as well. Thanks again Andy, hope you have a wonderful Christmas - Bill

Hi Bill, I love those inversions. They really do create some beautiful sounds, although some of the fingerings are difficult. That major 6/ minor 7 relationship is a very useful thing to know. I hope you have a great Christmas with your family too. My son is already so excited for 🎄
