A worryingly large number of workshops remain unaware that Ford’s popular 1.8 TDCi Lynx engine can have two high tenacity timing belt systems, according to OE timing belt manufacturer Dayco.
Widely used to power Focus, Mondeo, Galaxy and Transit Connect models between 1998 and 2013, the Lynx engine was initially launched with a timing belt for the upper drive system and a timing chain for the lower drive system.
However, in 2007 Dayco designed the world’s first belt in oil drive system with a solution to supersede the chain driven high pressure injection pump, as Dayco’s Glen Goldstone explains here on GWTV.

"popular engine" Yeah - well popular mate. You'll never convince me a belt in oil is better than a chain. EVER.

and just look how easy it is to change......once the engine is out and at head height. I think garages preferred not to know.

Hi. This video is very helpful. Thanks for uploading it. My question is that on my car the cam shaft snaped which has bent the valve luckily it didn't damaged the pistons. So I have bought the new head with complete valves, Hydraulic lifters and camshaft. So the timing is all out at the moment. I have bought the complete timing tool kit. I have used the timing bar to lock the camshaft from the right hand side. How do I lock the the fuel pump pulley and how do I use the locking pin to lock the crank pulley. In this video the belt is being changed in a normal circumstances n mine is completely different case. Please someone help. Thanks.

Alex gregory... you will have to remove the power steering pump & mount off the rear of the engine in order to be able to see or get to the tensioner which goes down through the rear engine case. Thats nornal procedure on a Mk4 mondeo 1.8 TDCi engine. Anything after 2007... should be running the wet belt setup... although in some cases.... cars have had an older engine installed because of engine failure and had an older type (chain) put in without the installer knowing. You have to check with these engines.

I'd rather stick to a chain drive methinks :) In most cases you get a good 40,000 miles extra before that sucker drifts in timing or rattles if you keep the maintenance up... Which is better than snap, clunk, valves-go-byebye

Many people or even whole taxi fleets were getting rid of wet belt in favour of chain. Yes, you can still fit the chain kit on the engine were wet belt was factory fitted

Very good information. I may have been conned by my garage. After a major service I was told my cam belt was changed. As my clutch was slipping a few months later I was booking my car in to have it replaced I said that I’m spending more money and would rather scrap it. The garage said the workshop opposite buys these cars for spares and would pay more. When the guy visited me he stated my January 2008 would have been the cam belt in oil so it was not worth as much as I had no proof it had been changed and the garage had only fitted a cam belt kit with water pump! Was I scammed?

my 08 plate connect has this engine, if you ring your local ford service center and give them your vehicle details they will tell you if your lower timing is a belt in oil or a chain. a lot of people say that after 2007 all 1.8tdci is belt in oil but mine is chain. Apparently if you look at your injectors and they are siemens injectors you will have chain but it is best to check with ford.

at what mileage would the chain have been replaced would it be the same as the wet belt that replaced it or would it be more .
@FatHead1979

What a god damn STUPID fucking idea. Let's replace the heavy duty lower chain that NEVER fails with a wet belt, which like any wet belt is super sensitive to oil quality/cleanliness.

It was done to get slightly better mpg which had cars reduce emissions slightly so could still be sold in Europe ....and screw being reliable
@ssss-df5qz
@ssss-df5qz Год назад
@@simonelsey can't believe that. I know EU emissions are stringent, but chain to belt gains would be negligible. Not even on the scale. It's a cost thing, plain and simple.
@FatHead1979
@FatHead1979 Год назад
@@simonelsey Given they only kept the engine for just over 12 months after the change, you'd surely have to ask what the point was in changing it for such as short period.

Do you know how much work ill have to do to remove the tensioner bolt to find out for sure which my engine has? Im gettin conflicting opinions as to whether my lower drive is chain or wet belt? With it being produced during the changeover period no one really seems to know definitively which it has. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Kindest regards, Alex

I'm pretty sure Ford swapped over to the wet belt in 2007, so if you have a 2005 / '06 model with an original timing assembly it's gonna be chain drive. It's no biggie though in terms of fitment though if you order a chain for a wet belt system or vice-versa as the pulley / sprocket and tensioner mounts are completely identical.

Not by Ford they weren't, once Ford exhausted their stock of lower chains, all Lynx engines were then constructed using the crappy wet belt solution.

My local trusted independent garage specialises in Ford's, has been going for over 15 years and has NEVER had to replace the lower chain on 1.8 TDCi engine. They HAVE had to do major repair work when a wet belt had snapped though!

Hi, is this applicable to 2.0 TDCI?
@FatHead1979
@FatHead1979 3 года назад
No, only the 1.8 TDCi, the 2.0 TDCi engines are totally different units.
@DigBipper188
@DigBipper188 2 года назад
Nope. The 2.0 / 2.5 use a single dry belt to run the cams and pump, unlike the 1.8 KKDA which as seen in the video, has a chain or wet belt system (depending on age) providing drive from the crank to the fuel pump. The fuel pump then has a second toothed pulley that takes drive from the fuel pump and this will run your valvetrain through a second dry belt.

Why on earth would you replace the timing belt when you can replace it with an orginal ford timining chain that will never need replacement? Even engines that were originally fitted with a timing belt can be fitted with a timing chain with only a slight modification! See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E0cY8xbzfJk.html
