Wax moth damage Combs are good for swarms too, because in nature it happens all the time, and here in Missouri if we put come in our swarm traps they get hammered some people say they do but I don't know how and I know they're not supposed to lay in honeycomb only brood comb well not at my house lol anyway instead of scraping It Off or throwing it away it's a way to use it.

This year I am using double stack five frame nuc hives that'll have a total of ten frames as bait hives . Even though the equipment is all new since I don't have access to old combs . I did recently rob burr comb and scraped some propolis frame a couple hives , I sprayed the burr comb with one shot of swarm commander and slid the burr comb towards the back of the trap . This is my first time trying to trap swarms . I live in the tri-city area of Va where we have had some very mild winter temps . My hives have already started raising drones and today was the first day of seeing them flying . I have one trap set up in my bee yard here in Prince George . I have my hives wrapped right now and feel it's too cool and too early to do any hive manipulations . I have maintained protein patties and sugar syrup on them all winter since our fall pollen and nectar flow was a dry one . Very little to no signs of varroa mites . I treated the hives back in November through December using mite strips for 45 days .. Hoping for an incredible spring flow this year . I am increasing the number of colonies from three to fifteen .. maybe more if I get any calls to catch swarms .. Let's go Beecrazy this year !

All of my boxes have circular entrances And any unoccupied boxes are set out for swarm traps
@strugglingbeekeepermarkcot9642
Just found your channel I am a new to bee keeping I am getting two Nucs this spring. I found a tree with bees in it and I am wanting to try to get some swarms out of it and I have been doing some studying on trying to trap them.

Welcome to bee keeping Mark, your gonna love it, you will find it to be the only hobby where you dont have to be scared to ask questions, all bee keepers bare something in common an enthusiasm to discuss anything bee related. Keep smiling

You should read "the honeybee democracy" by Dr Thomas D Seeley. He literally wrote the book on swarm trapping.
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 5 лет назад
Yes it is a great book! However the ideal height, size, and other factors Seeley gave are inconvenient. For my time invested I needed a trap easy to place (close to the ground haha) and grab. The fact that the box and frames match my operation make it all the more easier. This design while not the perfect trap caught myself and a friend many dozens of swarms.

thanks Kamon for another great video. I wonder if something needs to be done to keep wax moth away from traps with old combs. thanks again.

Kamon, to busy as well, have a question about using old comb in the trap, what do you do about wax moths taken over with the comb in the box?

Hi Kamon. I very useful tutorial. What's the optimum distance away from my hives would you recommend to site a swarm trap? Ideally the idea would be that this year, if one of my colonies swarms, they'll be in the swarm trap and not in the trees. (Like last year!) Thanks. Stuart

I used a Nuc box last year for a swarm trap, put some old frames with comb in it and in a short time it got filled up with Wax Moths! Any ideas how to avoid this? Great videos. Thanks.

Where's the bottom bar on that foundation-less frame? that would allow bees to anchor the bottom.

Whats your take on pollution and pesticides on Old comb do you rotate old comb out to keep the bees on cleaner comb? I know its not worth the work for someone that does it for money only but for some thats into as a hobby having a topbar is a really beneficial for the bee,s and the bee keeper to be able to rotate out there comb. When Bee,s swarm thay build all new comb i beleave part of that is to build clean comb for the hive. Thats jest my take on it no one know for shur because and have not built a bee translator yet lol

How often do I need to go check these traps? Some will be a 20min drive so didn’t want to go every day if I didn’t have too!

What about soaking your boxes in melted paraffin instead of painting?

That works really good all of our new boxes are dipped and so are our pallets.
