Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

Thank you, it has always been a favourite of mine. I used to live on the north Norfolk coast and Crossing the Bar was a perfect illustration of how the rising tide swept around the 'bar' beautiful.

Thank you. I looked up the definition of “bourne” and found it means “limit” or “boundary” which gave that verse a greater meaning for me. It’s an acknowledgement of the great distance between “time and place”, which are earthly concepts, and eternity, which is where we who have been redeemed, will meet God face to face. Luke 16:19-31; 1 Corinthians 15
