Have you ever done the powder sugar roll to check for mites?? I seen a guy in upper michigan do it. And it didn't kill the bees. And the mites fell off the bees.
@DoubleTopHoneyCo

Zero, zero, and zero yesterday. Not a single treatment since February. Only used 5 essential oils in my syrups and patties. Keep up the great work! For those still learning, .5 cups = 400 bees, .42 cups = 300 bees. The basket itself has had lines in it for years, 200 bees and 300 bees. Fill it, tap it to the line, enclose it, and shake.

@The Hive and The Homestead Good for you and that's awesome! Exactly what I read last fall to test this year. Tried powdered sugar several iterations last year, but never really reduced below an 8 count until I vaped them. Thyme (thymol) oil works great for Tracheal mites. Why spend all that money? These dang bee companies are turning into super greedy businesses. They are charging up to 5x the price of anything you can buy and make yourself. I mean, why pay $15 per hive per year on 2 bags of disposable mite-a-thol when $30 of Thyme oil can treat 100 hives for a year with just adding teaspoons to the 1:1 and patties you are already making? 👍
@privatebubba8876
@privatebubba8876 4 года назад
I like to vigorous shake and swirl the sample to dislodge any stuck mites, the bees are already dead so you aren't going to hurt them. We tested the our clubs hives with alcohol and sugar for a comparison and the sugar roll was typically 50% less than the alcohol wash on the same hives.
@privatebubba8876
@privatebubba8876 4 года назад
@The Hive and The Homestead I have Minnesota Hygienic queens and I don't even use essential oils, I live in the deep south and the bees fly year round so nosema is virtually non existent here. I do monitor for varroa and my hives rarely reach 1% but I find plenty of the little beasties on the sticky board when a lot of brood emerge at the same time.
@DoubleTopHoneyCo
@DoubleTopHoneyCo 4 года назад
@UCUaeRCv_mp8MjymqHZ2K_aQ What I meant by powdered sugar was for treatment. Open the hives and fill a handheld flour sifter and coat all the bees between the frames and all. This causes them to clean themselves excessively and mites that usually remain during normal hygiene routines are found while getting the sugar off however, after completing the alcohol wash there would still be on average 8 mites per 300 bees, so I switched to essential oils and had zero mites this year. Wasn't trying to insult your bee hygiene intelligence there, but so many on youtube bee channels no nothing at all about bees.

Never do math on camera lol. Do you select for resistance in your stock? I know you advocate for treating but i'm curious if you give mite resistance (vsh, chewing, etc) any weight when selecting breeders?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 года назад
Hi, Michael, I know right! We do select for a resistance where we can. I think we can help by breeding bees that are tougher. I do not believe in immune bees. I have tried to many TF queens over the years for that. I really don't have any I could say I would recommend 100%

Easy field math without a calculator just remember each mite is 0.33%, so for every 3 mites it is 1%, 4 mites is 1+0.33=1.33%. So if you had 7 mites it's 2.33%. How embarrassing simple math can be. Lol

Why not just treat the hives regardless and save the 300 bees? From what I understand is people are looking at what they started with and where they got to load wise after treatment. Why are folks just not treating a hive as a matter of coarse to get them ready for winter?
@SuperBuickregal
@SuperBuickregal 4 года назад
The beekeeping industrial complex effect! The inferior reproduction is what is going on with the Queen rearing is it not all about profits? If a big outfit can sell 10,000 Queens at $30.00 which then equals to $300,000.00 or how about 5000 or just 1000 that is still a lot of money for insects mind you still have overhead.

This bee math stuff gets incredibly complicated if you start talking about exponential growth and decay curves and natural logarithms. Understanding what's going on in a bee colony numbers-wise requires heavy duty math. To summarize...the killer math is that when bees are in their natural decay curve going into winter the mites are up in the high exponential growth part of their population curve. Bees are dying of old age and not getting replaced while the mites are cranking out babies. When the two growth-decay curves cross...x marks the spot...the colony all gets x's in their eyes. Dead.
