Hey I'm just a novelist beekeeper but my family were great apiarist so I'm from a long lines of beekeepers and they told me it's the queen circle supersedes that when the hive is doing bad a supersedure cell is formed after the queen lays in the center of the frame and swarm cells when the hive is doing great and becoming too crowded! Thanks for all your wisdom though my family are all too old to really teach me properly so you've helped me out! From an fallow inspiring apiarist!

First timer here. Hived my pkg a week ago (using the Apimaye Ergo Plus setup + ML wooden frames w/foundation) here in NW Montana. It's been fun watching the entrance ... 3 holes open, seeing a lot activity on sunny days and bees going in with pollen. Attempted 1st inspection yesterday ... verified queen was released and removed the queen cage. Inner frames very busy with bees literally clinging together like ants when I pulled them out (normal?). Comb being drawn. One of the top feeders was empty, the other still had quite a bit of syrup yet. Outermost frames had nothing going on at all ... I assume because the colony is young and it's only been a week, plus the weather has been on the cooler side. I was unable to spot the queen and the wind was kicking up, making smoking a PITA, so I cut it short and closed the hive back up and will try again next weekend. I expect this will be a slow process until our weather improves ... we have rain on tap this week. Anyone have some advice on how to easily spot the queen? I see Kamon has his marked - that's cool! How do they do that? This is all new to me...

Queen excluders are a tool many people do not understand or misuse. I use them, never seen a reduction in honey in the supers. One point to mention to new users, if you do what was shown, adding an Excluder and splitting the brood nest, come back in 6 or 7 days and inspect those frames above the excluder. Many times the bees get confused and start emergency Queen cells. Inspect and tear them down. Another good video Laurel and Kamon. 👍🏻

One thing I really like is the fact that you never run down other keepers and the practices they use. I’m just in the middle of my first winter and yesterday I took a look and I’ve got plenty of bees wintering. I have actually unsubscribe people who talk negative about other keepers. I don’t have time for people who think they know it all. Keep up the good work!

This is why I would recommend putting the new hive on the bottom. It would simulate a standing log as they would naturally have to expand down since they start drawing from the top to begin with. In this way all the bees also have to go past undrawn frames which might stimulate the need to start drawing.
@jweaver7170

i once saw a video a guy on here made where he did experiments with a hive, he put an egg in an open q cell to see if the bees attended to it and they did and they raised a virgin, he also as an experiment placed a drone egg in a q cell, the bees moved it and every time he did it they shifted that drone egg, so they know the difference between the eggs. he was trying to get a drone egg to be raised as a queen with the royal jelly but the bees were way to smart for that.

Enjoy watching your videos. I was working hives yesterday and the ants are terrible this year. I haven't really seen them but on the top of the inner cover and I saw a bee carrying around a egg down in the brood chamber. At the time I was thinking ant egg and had never seen this before. After watching your video, I question could it not be possible for workers to remove and transplant bee larva, just as you do when grafting? If they do, would it not be to far fetched to think they also are the ones to place larva in a queen cup and start the process? I have never seen a video or with my own eyes a queen laying a egg in a queen cup?

Hey Kamon, Thanks for an informative video. I have kind of an open-ended question for you. i have a queen in one of my colonies who is super productive.The brood fames she lays up are pretty much all brood, side-to-side and top to bottom. This is different from the rainbow patter that I am used to. I’m happy to have all the brood to make splits but am wondering if there is a downside to this kind of pattern. The hive has plenty of food so that is not a concern as far as I can tell. Stu
@kamonreynolds

@DavidLaFerney
@DavidLaFerney 4 года назад
Incoming nectar gets stored in comb , and then the queen has nowhere to lay - plus its smack dab in the middle of swarm season. Swarms tend to leave a colony with lots of food, brood, and young bees. So a hive with lots of food, brood, and bees, but nowhere for the queen to lay - in April and May especially - is a swarm waiting to happen.

@paulchristu996
@paulchristu996 4 года назад
Above the excluder, brood will emerge, then bees will fill cells with nectar.
@ke6gwf
@ke6gwf 4 года назад
There are different styles of hive management, but unless you are running giant colonies and leaving them lots of honey for the dearths, keeping them in a single brood box except just before and during peak nectar flow tends to keep the hives healthier and more stable, because one brood box is about the perfect size for a winter cluster of bees, and if you give them more than that, they have to work harder to condition and protect that extra space. When it's warm and there's resources flowing, they can do fine with extra space, but if you only give them additional brood space when they are actually needing that space, and only give them as many supers as they actually need, and remove what they don't need any more, they can stay in better condition, and your equipment does too, because excess space is perfect for beatles and wax moths and such to move into, even if bees are in the other part of the hive.

I am going to put an excluder on that hive and add an upper entrance so the drones can get out. Is this the right way to go and will the frame (s) that had brood later be usable for honey? The other hive is doing fine ,no brood in the super and i'm about to add a second super to it.

Hey Kamon, thanks for another great and informative video! We’re starting out with a couple Apimaye hives using plastic frames with 100% beeswax coated plastic foundation. Our hives have drawn out the middle 4 frames pretty well, but they seem to have just kinda stopped at that. They’ve been bringing in a lot of pollen (no trap on yet) and we’re still feeding. Should we watch and wait, now that the weather has warmed up; or should we try alternating drawn frames with foundation frames to get them to start drawing those out? Also, we’re about 4 hours east of you here in Tennessee, should we keep feeding our new bees if the weather is warm like it is? Thank you!
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 4 года назад
How the queens laying? The queen should be filling up the cells and the feed or nectar should force the bees to create more combs as there is no where to stick it due to her laying up the whats available.
@OTG414
@OTG414 4 года назад
Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees Thanks for the reply!. Our queens are laying really well. But she can only lay a few frames because that’s all that’s drawn out. In our first hive we have 3.5 frames of brood and one frame with mostly syrup; the first 4 frames are untouched. Our second hive is pretty new but they’re off to a pretty good start. We have a couple frames of brood but a lot of burr comb (probably because we kept forgetting to put the 10th frame in).
