I just picked one up at a junk store for $20. Couldn't believe it. Already have a GMRS that most of the folks use that I wheel with, but figured I couldn't pass it up.

I love thins thing. The other day we went into the software that came with it and widened out the receive frequencies even more. We have it receiving CB Frequencies in AM! It is awesome. My Favorite little radio, I actually have two!

I have this radio and like it. Great value/price ratio. It's got some quicks, like the display mode that defaults to frequency even if the channel is named - nuts - but overall I've been very satisfied.

Mine defaults to "CHANNEL" not "145.550". Don't remember if there was a setting.

Love the radio, but haven't been successful reading the radio from Chirp or the proprietary software. Tried new cable, etc., etc., but the support at Radioddity has been great and I plan to swap for a new one. Thanks for the review!

Man, you have an EPIC shack/command center!! It looks super badass. I had a Yaesu FT-8900 several years ago that I kinda regret selling. I was wondering if this one performs similarly in terms of reception, etc? It's a great price and seems to have all the same functionality as the Yaesu. Thanks for doing this review!

I have not had one of the Yaesu Models, but the copycat one is great. I have two, one base, one mobile. The TYT-8900 performs just as well receiving as any of my other VHF Rigs. I can also say that it put out nearly the full 50 watts promised if on a good power source..

Hello from NZ, I have had my radio for 6 plus years and enjoy using it. Mine does tx on 27 in AM as standard. Also, I turn the beep on in chirp but when pressing the band freqs the beep comes back, can’t figure that one. My only query is about the buttons on the right side of the mic, A,B,C,D - what do they do? Can the be programmed? How? Great channel keep up the great work.

Thanks for the review looking at replacing my 7500 from Vero with it forthe crossband functions
@StarShipAdventures
@StarShipAdventures 29 дней назад
I'm glad it was helpful. Then using the cross band I strongly suggest running both sides on the lowest power possible to accomplish the task. Also I suggest keeping it in a cool space with a fan blowing across the back. Heat dissipation on cross band where the duty cycle is higher than 50% is a Is potential problem

I had mine for a few weeks now, only thing for me is it cant do 1.25k steps so in the UK i cant get UK CB channels, but it is a very nice radio.
@StarShipAdventures
@StarShipAdventures Месяц назад
You should be able to change the step frequency in the menu, but at the very least you could program the exact frequencies in with the software.

@@StarShipAdventures thank you for your response, I have tried but the software won't take 27.91125 and unable to TX on that frequency, it's a shame as I really like this unit but I do have a dedicated rig for 27mhz so it's not the end of the world.

I thought the speaker was built into the mic. I thought the unit could be put anywhere. One guy had his under the spare tire cover. I wasn't planning to install and find a place for an external speaker.

I don't like the Speaker Mics, the audio quality is not good for traveling. A Large Mobile Radio Speaker put on the B Post right behind your head is best! When I travel in a different vehicle, I lay the unit on the floor below the seat, I can hear it fine.

I am a noob but I don't understand.; if this radio is FM only then how come I can talk to AM radios on the 11 M band just fine. I set up a cross band repeater so I can talk to the trucks in the yard using my Baofang HT. It works just fine. I didn't think k I was supposed to be able to talk to regular CB radios in FM but it works just fine... must be AM as well? There is a selection in the channel config to select AM. How did I get this to work if it is FM only?

@MaPMaKaR Месяц назад
@StarShipAdventures Thanks! I'm not criticizing your review, it's just that I want to understand. You are not the only one who's said on RU-vid that this FM radio won't talk to regular CBs but I guess no one has actually tried it because it SEEMs to work fine for me. Being a new HAM wannabe I would really like to know the technical reasons for all this. One thing I learned doing this experiment is the the tyt-9800 does NOT work great as a CB but it DOES in fact work. In my noob opinion, if you want to play around on 10-12 meters for dx it's better to get a separate 10 m rig but this does exactly what I want in the pickup. I look forward to hear what you come up with

@@MaPMaKaR I saw another comment about this radio on another video review. ]The reviewer was saying the same thing but a commentor said there is a space in programming mode to set it to AM. Apparently it defaults to FM unless specified. Then I also saw a comment that said older versions of this radio was able to broadcast in AM with no problems. Not sure what is true but I have one ordered and hopefully I can figure it out.

What are the benefits to programming always thou new radio would have newest software
@StarShipAdventures
@StarShipAdventures Месяц назад
It is best to formulate a Frequency List and Blow it into the radio. That way you can quickly go to the channel you need. No Firmware updates or any programming is necessary.
@JohnWilson-greytyphoon

Thanks I have done that. A nice upgrade to this radio would be the addition of upper and lower ssb. Seems to be the most popular transmission mode.73s
