Thank you for the great video! I just acquired this radio and having to learn it setting it up is a bot tricky for me. My radio shows volts display at the bottom, went into display options no luck changing it 🤔

I just got an 8600. I find this software confusing. Its much different than CHIRP. Ive yet to get my local repeater programed in.

Thank you, KF5MCJ, I am a getting restarted in ham radio in Tulsa. I just retired in March this year, I purchased this radio three of four years ago and it has been sitting in the box. It will be going in my car full time. I park in my garage, and I just purchased an antenna mount that allows me to raise and lower from inside my car. Do you mind if I contact you during my set up, if I have any question? First, I am a Kenwood guy, but I need a large display that I can read. I believe, with the information you provided, can complete the channel programing.

Great video! Thanks so much! I'm learning a lot about my radio. Sometimes you did things on the mike and we couldn't see what you were pressing. I'm confused about the CALL button -- what it does. So does the "dual standby" mean that both the A and B frequencies will be heard when someone is using them even if the arrow is pointing to only one of them? Thanks, Cynthia

Dual standby is that it will play the receive audio of both the A and B VFO's or Channel Modes. If this is off then you will only hear the audio of the selected VFO.

Just got the 8600. Want to program it for all the grms channels and noaa channels, for use on my sxs. Will it do noaa channels too? Are you able to to save the different grms channels with mic as channel 1,2,3 etc or only 1 channel by mic and have to do it on computer to save all channels. Thanks

How are you changing the programmed memories with the mike? The up/down arrows on mine change the volume, not the memory location. Thanks for the videos!

With the radio in memory mode the mic up and down buttons were already set to move the channels up and down.

@@HamRadioCrusader I found the answer buried in the fine print of the Chinenglish manual. Pressing the # on the mike toggles between Volume and Memory Channel... pretty handy actually!

@@SmileyFtW ⁠it’s actually the VFO / Memory channels. VFO stands for variable frequency oscillator.

Great video, just got a used one that was jailed breaked for gmrs also but once mounted and installed I can't receive but I can transmit just fine. Is the a way to factory reset this radio?

While in the programming software and you are at the channel list. double click the channel number, a new dialog box will pop-up. On the right hand side you will see a drop down box labeled "SCAN" Click it and change it to SKIP

Can you import a channel list saved to a .csv file? Aka. If I have a list saved from Chirp, can I use it with this software?

I do not know. I reviewed this radio for a friend and he mounted it on his side-by-side and LOVES it!!

not 25w vhf and 20w uhf. at best 20w vhf and 14w uhf into a dummy load.

When I go to write to the radio, it says successful, clone shows progress but the channels don't match up to the spreadsheet

Okay did you do the power on modification? By pressing the “Lo” and “AB” buttons while powering on the radio?

I just stumbled on the reason I could not switch between VFO and Channel name with the VFO button... The same 3-button "unlock" procedure is a TOGGLE function. So NO, you do not perform it each time. It is modal. Great little radio, but it sux that you can't program it with CHIRP.@@brandonholbrook4033

Suit yourself. I was GLAD he went this detailed with programming. It allowed me to troubleshoot why MY radio was not responding to the VFO button. There was NO help from the Chinglish user manual.

If you don’t want to watch the video, then DONT WATCH THE VIDEO! Is that too much to ask of you? No need to be a “Richard” about it, just scroll on by. Some of us want to see somebody else go through this so we don’t have to or at least know somebody else goes through what we go through.
