@@partical7 I don’t want to speak for him, but I believe he was preventing premature swarming before the nectar flow via rearranging the nest. It may still be too early for his area to add an excluded space. Bee brains are dynamic...that’s where the keeper earns his keep

I really enjoyed this very thorough frame-by-frame walk through in this video. As a suggestion I would like to recommend that, either at the very beginning, or at the very end, you give us a quick breakdown of what you are planning to do, why you do it, and what you are hoping to achieve by doing it. @@beebob1279 - Hey Bob, Frederick Dunn is a photographer and backyard beekeeper who has been keeping bees for just shy of 20 years. He started his RU-vid days discussing his chickens and even wrote a book on the subject. His bee channel has been great for the beginning beekeeper where he has weekly Q an A videos about beekeeping. And not taking anything away from Laurel and Kamon, they are awesome down to earth folks with a love for bees that shows in every video. They are just on a different level with over 300 hives. Fred tries to keep his apiary to under 20 colonies. Both great channels, just targeting a different audience. They just both happen to fit my particular demographic, as I am a retired Soldier of 24 years of active duty service and now a backyard beekeeper, with 10 hives (the bees are my zen), with goals of having a couple hundred hives. So for me they are both amazing folks that I have learned a great deal from. 😃 Also, I’m a home beekeeper and I by no means think I know it all. I’ve met beekeepers that have been doing it for 40+ years that tell me they are still learning about their bees. My channel is not about training anyone but myself. It’s my vlog to go back and check my successes as well as failures, so I can do it better next time. 😁

I used to have hives about 36 years ago, and now circumstances are changing where I may be able to get back into it, so have been watching videos galore. It will at least 4 or 5 months yet, but I am looking forward to it. One thing that has changed is there are more diseases/"varmits" to worry about than back then. But I'm not letting that stop me. From what I have seen from only two of your videos, I am impressed. I had been watching David Burns for a while, but actually unsubscribed from his channel. For someone who is a Master Beekeeper, he did NOT impress me. To me his channel was too much talking and not enough action. I think I have learned more from two of your presentations than I did from all of his. Keep up the GREAT work. Having learned about the weight of vertical hives back then, I am going to try horizontal hives and give my aging back a break. I don't plan on more than 4 hives, but that can change as well. I won't have to buy hives since I do a lot of woodworking and plan on building my own. But do plan on watching your channel a lot more.

Located in North Central WV and did a dive into the hives today. Was able to get a mated queen from Georgia (Carni Hybrid) to get accepted in 1 of my 6 hives that made it through winter. Checked my other 5 hives and they are just so full of bees I decided to so walk away splits once I found queen cups hanging off the bottom. One had already been capped. I took her and 7 frames full of brood all stages of bee life and a frame of honey to new location. Started with 6 hives today ended up with 8. 2 will need to make their own queen 🤞. Does it help reduce the swarm urge to pull brood and replace with new foundation, keeping the workers busy? Happy Blessed Easter to all. After seeing your burr-drone comb, this is our 2nd year of using done frames (per Mr. Binnie). It sure seems to reduce the binding burr comb. Kind of beautifying those pain in the arse bridging drone cells. Maybe freeing the workers to do other hive stuff? They do use it to keeping winter stores. And for a hive we don't find its genetics desirable, pulling those frames every 2 weeks or so, limiting potential bad seed spread? Realizing in a large apiary what kind of a nuisance that would be.

@attesmatte
@attesmatte 3 года назад
A tip I got was to first put a queen excluder between the brood boxes, and then, a few days later, you check for eggs, and the box with eggs will be where the queen is. Then you take that box and put it to the side on a separate bottom board with a cover/roof for an hour, just enough so that the forager bees have returned to the original hive. Once that's done you will only have nurse bees and the queen in that box that you put to the side, and it will make it much easier to find that elusive lady. 👍 I haven't tried this yet, but I definitely will try it this summer, because I also have a really hard time finding the queen.

All of our honey supers once drawn are reduced to 9 frames in a 10 frame box. I have even gone to 8 BUT they can be a pain to uncap sometimes as they will build burr comb between them from time to time.

It's amazing how fast a colony can get ahead of the beekeeper. You're in a time now where they've got to be checked often or they're in a tree. Excellent video showing your strategy on swarm control. I'm switching this year to comb production and this can be a nightmare for swarms if not done correctly. My friend who allowed me to use her certified extracting facility went into assisted living. I have no extracting facility now. I'll be processing cut comb at the farm store instead. Liquid honey brings too many bees to their retail center because of the honey smell and the urge to rob. Do you produce comb honey? I think it would be a great opportunity for you to demonstrate the management for comb honey. Herman Danenhower from my neck of the woods (Southeastern Pennsylvania) demonstrates the Juniper Hill Split and his changes he made to make producing comb honey less labor intensive. He's been featured in the beekeeping journals and truly knows his stuff.

@kamonreynolds

Sure and I agree with that. I would add that our kidneys can last 30 years to 100 years depending on abuse and stress. I live in a very rural area with little chemicals and use very clean products in and out of the hive and I have found that 10 years works good for me. Now that we have topped out at our desired 300 colonies we will start cycling them out sooner just because we can.

Here is my reality check......... for 16 years we built our dog kennel and then added cat boarding from the ground up. Very successful. Then COVID hit and we have went from on an average of 30 dogs daily ( $36 ) per dog , 15 cats ( $22 ) cat per day. Now we are lucky to get 2 or 3 dogs per day and zero cats. It’s been devastating since March 13th 2020. More people get a shot in their arms the faster the borders will open up. Then we will be back to craziness as most people want to go for holidays. Somewhere other then their folks place or very close friends house. It will get better , just hold on , bumpy roads are a way of life.

Can I put steel mesh around the closed swarm cells so that I can catch my queens because I feel bad destroying them, I'm a very recent bee keeper and would like to expand my bee army!!!

There are cages that can be made for this yes.

You use that foil for a inner cover. Is that just for the winter? Also what about allowing ventilation?

Hi I'm just south of you around 50 miles. I have 9-10 capped queen cells. I can't find the queen and they haven't swarmed yet. Can I just take a guess put one box 30' away and and not loose as many? and after the swarm remerge them.

Q…is there a reason, except to much work, that you do not remove the excessive burr comb on the frames you handle? PS…useful video, thanks.

When u pull frames of brood to ad to a struggling hive, do u shake off the bees, if not, do you just mix the bees and do they get along ok

Thanks for your videos. I keep my bees in doubles over winter and add a 3rd deep for swarm control. I also rotate. What do you do with the pollen frames (especially in the bottom box)? Will the bees consume it and allow space for eggs or with the constant flow of pollen will they just "plug" it up? I split early April when I'm able to get queens (feral bees extremely hot). Also do the green drone frames help keep the bees from distorting the frames or does that matter. I'm destroying a lot of drones between the boxes. Thanks for your help.

Where do you get the shiny sheets of material you have on top of your frames? What are they called? Thanks!

Home depot and most lumber yards carry this material. It is used for insulating heating ducts and is the same width as our boxes which is nice. Reflix is one name for it.

Kamon Im in Alabama and I am waiting on my first 2 packages to get here and I can get started. Can you please share with me how you know that those frames your pointing at are brood without pulling out the frames. This is a new concept for me. Thanks

I can look between the frames and see the capped brood cells. WHich looks quite different from capped honey. I can't distinguish between ages of brood or anything like that

Kamon, Ive noticed that most the hives I see you work only have 9 frames in what looks like a 10 frame box. What is your reason for this? Thank you in advance!!! Larry Bawcom

It saves me 10% on the frame investment into the operation. On a 1000 boxes it really adds up. However, that was when I was running my honey production colonies as doubles. Now I run them (when the flow starts) as singles with an excluder. I prefer having 10 frames in a single brood management system.

Hi.. you do not use metallic covers for your hives , right ? Are these wood covers waterproof ? in case of rain is the be-colony protected from the water infiltration ?
@kamonreynolds
@kamonreynolds 3 года назад
Yes these lids are dipped in hot wax and boiled. This seals them.
