The show tried to play that off by saying that it was his choice all along, he just happened to make what they believe to be the right choice. Basically, we are who we are and that explains the time-loop issue. I don’t personally agree but figured I would throw in my two cents.

What bothers me is that they act like they could never see him. I loved the idea of Lucifer being Hell's healer. However, Rory is an angel. She could visit him whenever she wanted. Though Lucifer couldn't be gone long because of how time passes faster in Hell, he most certainly could come up to see the birth of his child and visit them. I'm sure Amenadiel or a demon could've filled in so Lucifer could spend time with family. I just think it was unnecessary to make it so Lucifer could never see them again.

Well I know the devil's only weakness he is afraid of God and the devil is also afraid of what happens when somebody has the Spear of longinus the very spear that pierced the side of Christ but also the best thing I know about Lucifer's weakness is that red horned abomination doesn't like it when somebody repents. And I know I'm going to be repenting for quite a while and I already know right then and there that Lucifer doesn't like me because I have something that he doesn't have and that is the ability to keep my faith in God strong.
