Also you can put your cables under the front hood ✔️ I actually removed the centre headrest on my current car to try see better out then back. You can buy a usb light for the back no biggy. The ONLY two things I miss on the std range SE is the reversing camera and rear wiper but tbh even the lack of rear wiper (actually available on later production cars) doesn’t take away from anything this beautiful sexy joy to drive motor 👍
I have one as well and the infotainment system is buggy as hell. Also the pilot emergency lane assist keeps trying to kill me by jerking me into oncoming traffic. I still love it but I have some very profound issues. I certainly wouldn't buy the new roadster. Paying 55K and having this kind of issue would be very annoying.
I have a Trophy version. As already said below by Mark, none of these things are a real issue and certainly not irritating to me. This is an outstanding car for the money and beats a lot of the competition hands down in most areas.
Well, I actually agree with most of the people in the comments. And as I said in the video, twice I believe, I do believe the MG4 IS a great car, especially for the money. But there is always room for improvement. I've made other videos espousing its great features and wanted to do this one a bit differently. But I never denied that it's a very good car, especially the Trophy version

I’ve not missed having a rear wiper as dirt and grime can’t reach the rear windscreen due to the way the back spoiler is designed. I’ve never thought about it and I’ve driven on wet and muddy roads in pouring rain.

1. This "design feature" is always sold as "aerodynamics will clear the rear screen" - bullshit, and will never work in the morning reversing of the driveway. 2. It has a steering wheel to hold on to... 3. My dogs can see perfectly well in the dark. 4. My dogs don't need headreasts, and it gives clearer view out the rear. 5. Previous EV I didn't even open the frunk for over a year, turned out it was still empty when I checked before handing it back to lease company
I think the aerodynamics probably get the job done with a sedan, but yea, a hatchback deserves a rear wiper! The grab handles I think are a nice-to-have mainly for passengers, but fair enough, most dogs are probably not worried about that... they just have to brace themselves or slide if it comes down to it. My dog likes to stick her head out the window when we ride, so she's indifferent about headrests either way, but if yours like to look out the back, I can see this missing feature being more of a benefit for you 😄
I've heard that about the lack of a wiper from several users! Then, as I see in my comments, for others it's "no problem". I can definitely forgive the MG4 for no frunk and you make a good point that even much more expensive cars do not have it, but I mean they all COULD! If they just put a tiny bit more effort into arranging the front components 😄
In NZ just ordered a 2023 MG4 51 (LFP) Excite Camden Grey. This has reversing camara, back seat centre head rest, back seat roof grab handles, rear wiper. Single, no wife or kids, so do not need frunk, or rear passenger lights. With ORC less govt rebate 22,300 euros or 19,040 pounds.
That's a perfect price! It's great that you have a rear camera, that's something people in Europe really miss in the basic trim. I'm sure you'll be happy, the bugs that owners point out are pretty minor, but the better the car is, the more annoyed one gets with them. 😄 Let me know when you have the MG4 what your first impressions are!
Tried one out today - is it only me who has a problem with the headrests (in the front) being angled so far forward? The driver's one felt like it was pushing my head down! Dealbraker for me which is a shame, I was really keen on it.
Oh, I think there was a misunderstanding. The MG4 does have a rear view mirror, it does not have a rear window wiper, which could impair visibility in rainy weather. The Trophy/Luxury version also comes with a 360° degree camera, which is missing in the SE/Basic.
Yes B, a lot of EVs don't have frunk and it's a shame! Hopefully they'll get a grip and the new versions will finally have it.🤞 Some manufacturers put such useless mess under the front hood it makes you wonder what they're smoking 😄

don't disagree but the vast majority of cars tend to have a major deal breaker instead of these minor things, lack of power, poor handling, inefficient, FWD, ugly! etc.. so it's still on my list.
I know what you mean, when I was shopping for my new EV I realized how many serious shortcomings a lot of these new EVs have. And for completely unreasonable prices at that. 🙄 I do agree that the things mentioned in this video are pretty minor and MG has actually fixed some of them (rear wiper, rear headrest and the driver settings) in the 2023 model, so they should be non-issues. The 2023 version will have the rear wiper and middle back headrest but costs 3000-4000€ more. I'm more disturbed or blinded by the much too bright backlight of the speedo/tachometer in front of me at night. The minimum brightness is too high!
I know a lot of people are indifferent about the wiper, but I've also heard feedback from many who miss it. The headrest I think would be perfect to have one of those that you can pull up when needed. That price difference is not insignificant, so it'll be interesting to see if customers want to pay extra. Hopefully they'll resolve the intense brightness with a software update🤞
1. I genuinely don’t understand why everyone complains about the lack of rear wiper. I live in the U.K., we get rain (plenty of it), I haven’t had a problem with visibility. BUT…. 4. No centre headrest - do you want extra visibility or not? This would block visibility FAR more than a missing wiper. And you’re not really going to have an adult in that position very often, so it’s not needed.
I agree with everything except the rear wiper. In practice it makes no difference The driver settings reset to default every time, which is a pain. I've read lots of mixed messages about the rear wiper - lots that agree with you, but also lots complaining about the lack of it. And I do believe it's more of a pain in the SE version, as there is no spoiler to guard the window. I just feel like a rear wiper belongs on a hatchback. Thanks for the info about the driver settings. I believe the other commenter was also referring to driver settings, mentioning lane assist in particular. Well, that is pretty annoying... just another thing to think about every time you get into the car 🙄 Regarding Mastodon, I'll keep it in my back pocket and get on there eventually as well. The visibility through the rear window is poor, & with a centre headrest would be dangerously inadequate. It wouldn’t matter if you have a rear facing camera, but you have to pay out for the trophy version to get one & I don’t like the rear spoiler you get with that: It does nothing for the downforce at the speeds this car is capable of, & the drag it creates actually cuts the range considerably. All in all a missed opportunity for MG: if they had addressed all the points in this video,I would already have bought one!
I completely agree! Current EVs still have so many compromises, unless you spend like a gazillion on them. That's why we need to criticize these car companies a bit so they are motivated to keep improving. With EVs becoming more mainstream, I think it will keep getting better 🤞

So I've had my MG4 now for about 5 weeks. The rear wiper is not that big of a deal in the UK (for now at least!) as I've not washed the car yet and it's still plenty visible. The rear camera and sensors though render the rear wiper unneeded. I'll tell you what's really annoying though, and there's a few on the Trophy version in the UK: no rear armrest and as you said, no frunk or rear lights but most of the time I travel alone so not much of an issue for me. Chucking the cable in the relatively small boot is also annoying. No heat pump so cold temperature range does suffer a bit. And yes, user settings (drive mode, adas features etc) all reset every drivecycle. While the drive mode (eco, normal, sport) makes no sense as to why it resets, the lane keep assist (which I disable on every startup as it's dangerous on British roads) is part of why the MG4 has such a good safety rating so they were sort of forced to enable it every time. But I've set the shortcut buttons to the drive modes so it's 2-3 taps and it's off. Other than that, I just love the car, it's smooth, quiet, comfortable and pretty fast. Apparently the upcoming MG4x will have a rear wiper among other things but the UK won't get that either for some reason. However, when comparing to many other more expensive rivals, the MG4 is simply amazing and as with any quirks, you learn to live with them. Good video! :)
I've heard mixed things about the rear wiper. Some say no biggie at all, others would love one, especially when backing out of the driveway and similar scenarios. That being said, the rear camera in the Trophy certainly diminishes the need for it significantly. Though I must admit, even having a rear camera in my car, I always still end up looking behind me as well (force of habit, I guess) 😄 As far as the heat pump - someone else mentioned that in the comments, but I actually didn't know this. I'm pretty sure that the UK version is the only one that doesn't have it. Which doesn't make any sense to me. It obviously gets cold there so... why no heat pump?! The frunk also gets me - it just really seems like a missed opportunity. I mean sure, I don't know how much adding one would add to the manufacturing price, but I think it just can't be all that much! Thanks for confirming about the driver settings! What you say regarding the safety rating makes sense. But, kind of annoying to try and force this on people I'd say! Still, maybe it's just a good preview of where we're headed if autonomous driving becomes more prevalent over time. Personally, I have very mixed feelings on that front. All that being said, I definitely agree with you - I still think MG4 is an awesome car, especially considering the price point. It certainly sets the bar quite high for other EVs. 🤩
@@siasek The heatpump in the UK is a weird one, a lot of manufacturers either don't offer it or they offer it with a premium, which is quite annoying. Working in the automotive industry allowed me to drive many cars and to date, the best one for me was the Jaguar I-Pace in terms of driving dynamics (probably because I've not had the chance to drive a Taycan :)) ) but honestly, if I drop my MG4 into sport, it feels only a bit slower, yet the ride comfort and handling are just as good. For half the price! I am still amazed at MG's current options and how much they provide for the price and were it not for the ZS's unavailability (which I wanted initially), I would have ended up with one. Glad I stuck to the MG4 and even with its nuisances and quirkiness, it still makes me smile every time I drive it. On the autonomous driving side there are plenty to be said. But imagine having the option of not having to drive if you don't want to. Or having your car pick you up from wherever if you're tired or had a few. Less (or no more) accidents and fender benders. For me that sounds appealing as I grow older because as much as I still love driving now, there might come a time in life when other things are more important and I'd like my car to work for me and take care of me, not the other way around.
I haven't had a chance to drive the I-Pace, but now I'm intrigued. My best driving experience so far remains the Polestar 2. But, as you say, the MG4 is a perfectly enjoyable ride and at that price point, I might even say it's in a class of its own. And if you say you smile every time you drive it, well then you definitely picked a winner 😊 You make great points regarding autonomous driving and I agree with you. Which is also the reason for my mixed feelings. Like I realize that autonomous driving holds enormous potential in terms of safety, convenience.. probably even improved traffic flow. And yet there's a part of me that feels iffy about handing all control over to a robot. Which is a bit silly coming from someone who also uses public transportation and flies somewhat frequently. I'm perfectly okay handing control over to a human who has a much higher margin of error than an autonomous driving system probably (hopefully!) will? Yea, it's not rational per se, but that's how I feel 😄 Luckily it's not something I'll have to decide on yet, so I'll leave my conflicting feelings for future me to address.
@@siasek I know exactly what you mean, I work in the industry and my skepticism is diminishing every day. As I said before, I still very much love driving and the experience that comes with it, it's why I rarely use eco in my MG4, but I would like to know that there are systems that protect me and the other passengers if necessary or even take over when needed. The Adas features on the MG4 aren't bad but they would need refining, the lane keep assist is actually something most people turn off as the back lanes in the UK aren't suitable for how LKA was calibrated. But on the I-Pace it was much better and if I wouldn't have tested multiple cars with this feature, I'd have assumed they're all terrible. Having said that, the traffic jam assist on the MG4 is brilliant on the motorway as it does use the lane keep function paired with adaptive cruise control so I do use that on longer trips. We'll see what the future brings, when I was a teenager some 15-20 years ago, the best you could hope for in a reasonably priced car was to have ABS and look where we are now :)
I've only heard negative feedback about the lane assist from UK drivers.. I wonder if it's somehow connected to the right hand drive or the lack of markings on back roads? But then again, if you say the I-Pace was better, that wouldn't hold up. So, maybe just something for MG to work out 🤷 I've used the traffic assist in both the e-Golf and now in the e-C4. It does make long drives much more pleasant. So I guess I'm not as freaked out by autonomous driving as I maintain 😄 Though it did take me some time to even get used to this. What do you do in the automotive industry?
for the price they are charging, some STANDARDS SHOULD BE UPHOLD - rear wiper is a comfort thing and safety thing, the grab handles are a MUST, many people need them, not just elderly, people with lower extremities impaired are a must to sit without dropping and even causing an injury. the rear light could have been so simple and chap, it doesnt even have to be on the roof and is a needed thing when people enter car at night to see where they are putting their legs and if something is in the seat. put a dark laptop on rear seat to have some friend sit on it, thank you mg! FRUNK is a must on a dedicated EV designed vehicle, meaning they were just lazy or worse - THEY DONT WANT TO GIVE US FRUNK FOR "CHEAP" CAR?!!?!? 33k euro is base model in my country, 38k euro is long range - meaning Tesla model3 is 43k in my country, i really have a hard time not buying a tesla even though I hate everything about it, it is still a lot more of value than this EXPERIMENT. I loved MG4 interior, quality... but for the price, buying a UNKNOWN (or even BAD REPUTATION ) brand should mean some compromises, from buyer but also from producer. You cant charge that much compared to other stuff on the market.
MG even just increased their MG 4 prices.... they didn't do that because they weren't selling enough. More competition is needed, not everyone wants to buy an SUV.
I absolutely agree with you, but I think at this point MG doesn't have the competition needed to up their game. Despite the fact that it comes up short when it comes to features, it's the best value available for the money, especially the SE version. So, yes, you do end up making numerous compromises, but if you don't want to break the bank but still get an EV, at this point I believe MG is the best option
No rear centre headrest, I'd say that was a positive. Who rests their head on a headrest in a car, they are a safety item and most don't suit every person anyway.
😄 Well, I guess it just comes down to how important passenger safety is. Personally, I think it'd be cool if there were a detachable headrest option or one of those headrests that folds down when not in use, so as not to obstruct the driver view unnecessarily

2023 Phase 2 models include a rear wiper, rear centre headrest, front and back grab handles and one pedal driving mode. Also, user accounts so that you can save your preferred driving method without it switching back to default every time you start. They obviously listened to feedback, especially from you 😉

It's funny that you'd make that assesment of the whole channel. I actually think most of the other videos I've done on MG4 have been very positive, and I do believe I said 2x that I think the MG4 is a pretty great car even in this video. But perhaps we just have different perspectives on what's positive vs negative. 🙂
