The reason Solomon declared that Adonijah should die was that his request to have Abishag as his wife was an act of treason. Marrying her would have given him another avenue to the throne since by law she was a wife to David and marrying her would amount to marrying a queen/ consort of David (a member of his harem) giving Adonijah a higher claim to the throne than Solomon . By this time nothing was too low for Adonijah. The higher he wished to climb the lower he had to stoop.
