@@ZeroToAwesomeFirst off, Thanks for posting! Is there a need to replace both sides or is it just the passenger side? Does that part number come with both if so?
@@Sunchild714 I’d replace them both while you have the glass out. Only one side of mine broke but the other side was clearly about to break. Double check before you order, but I think now they only sell the rails in pairs
Ford repaired my sunroof twice before replacing the entire roof and mechanism once, all under warranty. Now that my truck is out of warranty, I will be doing this fix myself this time. #SIGH
Shame on Ford. JUST MAKE IT RIGHT. DO SOME PRODUCT TESTING!!! This issue and the problems with the PVN “chrome” wheels issue that they are having. It’s just a mess.
I believe your supposed to use silicone paste only on the rails ( the ones that broke ) and Krytox lube GPL 205 on the weatherstripping seals ( after cleaning with alcohol ) and hinge points. Lube the weatherstripping every time you do an oil change. This is at least what I am doing have had no issues so far.
You have to clean and lube the seals and set plates every few months and you'll be fine. TSB-192169 from Ford outlines it all. I learned that the hard was as well lol
I have a 2018 Raptor with the sunroof. The secret is to tilt the sunroof first, then close. Now it will easily slide aft. This will break the “seal”. It’s just part of owning an F150 with a problematic sunroof. Oh and keep the rubber seals around the glass clean and lubricated.
It's a damn shame we pay $70,000 plus for a truck and everything is made out of cheap plastic. Ford tough my ass I wish Ford would own up to the cheap workmanship and warranty the shit right so sad. Good job on the fix thanks for the video
For all the others having this issue and not able to find the plastic bits, I ended up using compressed air all along the track to at least get it to move ouot of the way. Finally could get the roof to close...saved for later repair... @Zero To Awesome, thanks for the video
Of course I go to fix mine and it's not the rail but there is the plastic piece tiny that pulls the metal arm that is attached to the track that breaks. Well that tiny little piece broke. Don't even know how to get it out or even order the part and get it back in. Grrrr I hope im right but i think its the cable guide which requires more work and money but is fixable
Our 2017 350 has been in the shop several times for this same issue. Ford should pay us for all the downtime without our truck. …and transporting it back & forth to the dealership.
This JUST happened to me with it stuck open (like yours). A plastic piece broke off the front air deflector. Thought I got all the remnants out but still not working. Maybe more broken pieces on the track, towards the back (where I can't reach). This problem is in addition to ANOTHER technical problem with the ABS sensor alerts that lead to 8 different warning messages. Basically shuts down many of the electrical functions on the car. Had that problem, too, and Ford replaced a bunch of stuff to no avail. The battery dying (resetting the damn electrical panel?) fixed it and now it's happening again. The Ford Expedition is the most beautiful but fault-ridden vehicle I have ever had. I will NEVER buy Ford again.
I just had my roof fixed in 2020 because it stopped closing, now in 2021, just over a year later - it happened again! This time I'm fixing it myself thanks to your marvelous video. Clear and concise. I like your Raptor too!! Thanks for the video. UPDATE: I found the part at my local Ford dealer for $149. Today will be the day to "fix" the issue.
I just ordered my parts to fix my sunroof. Mine also got stuck fully open but I couldn't get it to go back forward like you did. I did manage to get the sunroof unscrewed and was able to slide it all the way forward and found one plastic piece after approximately 100 cuss words ( shout out to my wife for helping me! ) but now I'm worried I wont be able to get the tracks all the way forward to vent it. We shall see this weekend when the parts come. Thanks for the video!
The second time my sunroof broke, I spent a bit of time getting it closed and then pulled its fuse. Additionally, Ford may have entered my do not purchase again list.
Clearly a Ford design problem! I have 2018 F150 Platinum with the same issue. Luckly it's still under warranty! Watching your video and other video's, looks like a schedule maintenance is needed. Thanks for the info
I have a 2017 also! Mine broke today! Smh. They cheaped out on this and on the PVD “chrome” process for the wheels on these vehicles too. It chips and peels easily.
Krytox is what Ford uses for lube. For people that can't get there sunroof to move at all or the sunshade to retract. Slide your back window to the side, stand in the bed and pull down the back of your headliner. You can put a Allen wrench into the motor and move the mechanism manually. I did take the plastics around the rear seatbelts to be able to pull down further.
Would this be the same on a 2013 Raptor? I have only one piece of glass...not two like yours. I noticed a loose metal rod (the back end) with a hook on the back end end on both sides. What do you think?
Wanted to say thanks for this video - ten times better at explaining what broke, how to fix it, etc than even videos with actual mechanics trying to explain. Not sure I’ll tackle it since it’s supposed to be under warranty and I’ve been waiting a month to get into the shop (still got 1 week to go) but just wanted to say thanks and great job. Truly enjoy your channel and all the videos.
Warning... sigh. This is an error you can avoid. Once you complete installing the new rails and attach the drip channel back on to both rails. DO NOT OPEN the system without re-attaching the window. In pushes down the drip channel when it comes down to go under your back window. If you do not have the window on... well lets just say I had to order a new drip channel for $307.00. It got caught when they system was retracting and snapped on of the arms. Otherwise these instructions were AWESOME. This saved me a lot of hassle working with a dealer.
Great vid, thank you, my dealer had quoted $1200 for the fix. Ordered the new OEM rail/guide pieces on-line for approx $140 (both sides, inc. shipping) and repaired today. Followed your instructions step-by-step and it was fairly easy. Hardest part was getting the new guide started on reassembly and fishing out all the shattered plastic pieces along the track. Mine shattered and some pieces were at the very rear of the track. Took my time and was finished in 2 hours. THANK YOU!!
Not sure if anyone asked this, but how did you know what rail side was broken? Do the rails come in a pair? My sunroof started doing this today, I can’t open the sunroof, so I’m guessing something is being blocked by something in the railway
I knew which side it was b/c there was a clunk on one side as it tried to close. I’m pretty sure the rails are only sold in pairs these days. I’d replace them both while you have the glass out. Once I got mine apart I saw the other side was cracked and about to break
Anyone have an issue where it’s just not catching to open? My sunroof acts as if it’s opening. It moves as if it’s working but, the glass isn’t moving with it but, it will vent.
Lower cable guides are likely toast now. Nearly 100% of them that have these upper arms break now, also take out the lower guides when it happens. These trucks are all older now, and the lower guides are a lot more brittle, and simply don't survive the trauma like they used to.
How about a simple manually operated sunroof made with metal? Becauae all Ford is capable of making is a thing in the roof that should be referred to as a rain hole.
Yes. Works on every model since 2015. On nearly every one nowadays though, the lower cable guides are also broken. Didn't use to be the case a few years ago, but now that they're older and more brittle, the upper arms breaking usually takes out the lower guides as well.
Given all the issues you’ve had with your moonroof, would you buy another f150 with that option? I’m in the market for a 2022 f150 tremor, considering getting it without the moonroof to avoid the hassle.
did you have any problem with the moving glass to be flush with the big stationery on the outside seam? my dealer just replaced it under warranty and I have an almost 1/4' seam un-level on the outside between the two pieces
Mine is stuck in the closed position. It will vent, but not open. It will just drop down and not slide back. Super frustrating by I dont think I can do the job shown in this video, and I’ll have to pay fords ridiculous repair costs.

Well tried to "fix" mine. No luck. So in the shop it goes today. I will never use it again once it gets fixed. Probably won't own another Ford or any vehicle with a sunroof after this one. 2017 F150 here too.
“many curse words later...” and subsequent iterations, standard operating procedure (SOP) for fixing stuff. “If it breaks a 3rd time...cursing & yelling...it’ll just be 8 minutes of that.” That’s just a funny line, and shows great restraint. I’d be cursing and yelling for 20 minutes at least. I acknowledge your superiority at DIY repair.
You literally save me man! Sunroof was sticking and would pop when I vented or opened. At 70k miles it got stuck in the open position. I found the broken pieces and was finally able to close. With inflation kicking our butt as a family, I thought well get prepared for an expensive trip to the dealer. Going to order 2 new tracks to have one as a backup. You remember how much the OEM tracks are? Just subscribed btw

Great information thank you but got me to thinking! I followed your dis assembly procedure tonight and took the arm out and removed the broken plastic bits! Then I though why do we need to replace the arm if only the little piece on the back broke off, and a few crack in the rail the tail serve little purpose! So I re assembled it and used O ring grease on the seals and cycled it a dozen times and no issues! I suggest you give it a try as well before spending a pile on 2 over priced arms! I
FL3Z 1651070 E is the most recent number from Ford. These came out in fall of 2019 and I've never seen a set of these break yet. They are still being used in new tracks today
What year model is your truck. I just picked up a preowned 2020 Raptor and the sunroof does seem to have a lot of “sticking power” or “suction” when it’s being opened.
@@ZeroToAwesome Hopefully they fixed this issue by the 2020 models but probably not... When the sunroof screen rolls back do you have a creaking sounds? I live in Mansfield but have built and sold homes all over the metroplex and it looks to me like you may live in the DFW area. What city do you live in? Those donuts look like Bridgeport OHV Park??
@@Captain-Awesome yeah, the sunroof cover has always been a little creaky but I’ve never had an issue with it. And right on all counts! I’m in Keller and that was Bridgeport.
@@ZeroToAwesome LOL!! I thought so, the picture in my thumbnail is from out there one foggy morning. I am building homes in Southlake and Westlake. So not far from you, maybe we can connect to help provide some content. Those donuts at Bridgeport will chunk up your tires quick. I did a few out there in my 2014 Raptor about 4 years ago and decided pretty quick that I wouldn’t be doing that again 😏.
My god my Sun roof did this yesterday. Now this part you purchased from ford was it just the brackets or was it the entire setup for the sunroof? What’s another site to get just the brackets from?
It’s just the rails. Do yourself a favor and replace them both while you have the sunroof out. Ford’s prices aren’t bad. Just grab them from a local dealer
Thanks for the video. Mine got stuck open and I took it in to service they said there was a rock in the track and now the cables are stretched. Quoted me $4500 and recommended I just don't use the sun roof any more. I know the tracks were broken because I fished some plastic bits of of there. I haven't touched it in a year, but think I should give this a try.
Ford has the worst (and most ignorant) customer service ever. After spending an hour on the phone with the service department re: finding the manual override for shifting gears, they finally got the manager. He told me to google it and that 'the videos' he had seen said x, y, and z. He said if that didn't work, he couldn't help me. The service MANAGER. And the markups? Don't get me wrong... I am used to manufacturers overpricing after-market service and parts but their mark-ups are beyond obscene.
Same issue with my '17 Super Duty, except mine is currently stuck with the sun shade in the closed position, so I can't even get to the glass to unbolt and swap the arms out. Any ideas on how to get the shade to retract? Dealership wanted $3200 to repair - I was 3k miles out of warranty when I took the truck in - BEYOND PISSED
Dang. I’d be pissed too. You may be looking at taking the headliner out to get to it but try holding the moonroof close button for 10-15 seconds first. It’s supposed to reset the system
