Testing the Hornady Custom ammunition in 9mm and .357 Sig, both using the Hornady XTP bullet. The 9mm is rated at 975 FPS and the .357 Sig is rated at 1,225 FPS. I am using my 5" M&P 2.0 pistols for both. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...

I want to address something that has been bothering me lately, and that is the repeat comment in some form or another, about .357 Sig ammo price and availability. Paraphrasing 100 comments into one here - ".357 Sig is not available anywhere, and it's two to three times the cost of 9mm so it's useless". My question to these people is - what are you even talking about?! I know that a lot of physical stores do rack up the price because all they offer is generally Federal American Eagle .357 Sig, which is very pricey ammo. But to say that the cartridge is hard to find and to say it's like $60 a box in general, is very factually wrong. Going on ammoseek, there are 5+ pages of .357 Sig for purchase just like any other popular cartridge, and about a dozen of these retailers offer 50 round boxes of .357 Sig for $22 to $25. Also, defensive ammo is often about the same price if not less than 9mm+P defensive ammo. The fact is, .357 Sig is not all that hard to find and not all that expensive. It's not a lot different (at least online) than buying a 50 round box of .357 Magnum for cost and availability, but for whatever reason a lot of people are either seriously misinformed or have an agenda to make it seem as .357 Sig ammo is about as rare and expensive as .455 Webley (5 retailers online averaging about $65-$70).

Can we all agree that all handgun cartridges are fun and useful tools in the bag, and not get so touchy over satire? I obviously own 9mm handguns and being as poor as I am, did not spend money on like 4 or 5 of them just to make fun of the caliber. So based on past videos' pubescently raging comments I have gotten when I sarcastically (with a small grain of truth) bashed the 9mm, I am preemptively responding to the ALL CAPS comments and saying, just chill out. It's all in good fun. (Filmed 1/31/24)

I have already gotten comments on this video that I had to remove as they were getting into name calling and more or less crying. Some people didn't like the title either. But let me say this once, a LOT of people deserve this title. Having the opportunity most people do not, of interacting with 100 people a day in comments leads to a lot of the same annoying comments, often with people berating me over the fact I tell the truth about what I see in testing. The nonstop nonsense of how 9mm is more powerful than .357 Magnum as long as it's 9mm+P, or how 9mm is more powerful than .45 ACP, or how 9mm is more powerful than .44 Magnum because 15+1 at 400 ft lbs is more overall energy than 6 rounds at 800 ft lbs. It never ends. As much as I like to see the good in all people, there are a lot of annoying people who like to spread misinformation. I enjoy disproving much of it through testing.

357 sig is very underrated and yes it makes the 9mm fanboys cry... It's also extremely fun to hand load because you can do so much with it.
@GunSam
@GunSam 8 месяцев назад
I have never hand loaded that one specifically, in auto I stuck with .45 ACP. I heard crimping them can be tricky. Like they do headspace on the shoulder so they are roll crimped? I can't remember it all but I think I read something like that.
@texasbradley
@texasbradley 8 месяцев назад
@@GunSam It's not that bad Sam and yes it's a bottleneck cartridge but it headspaces on the mouth. Because of this it should not be roll crimped, use a taper. The only tricky part is making sure your case length is within tolerances and not to long, especially after several reloading's. If the case length is even a tiny bit over spec it will cause feeding issues and can be frustrating if you fail to trim them. I use Accurate #9 (love that powder) and can easily push 115gr JHP1400 fps out of a 4 inch barrel with Excellent accuracy. Estimated pressures with that load are ~ 31k PSI and that's about 9k under max.

@texasbradley
@texasbradley 8 месяцев назад
@@FoulPet I feel the caliber and topic is kind of gone off the wayside with the overabundance of 9 mm. I know people that don't even know what 357 sig is, never heard of it, hence my point. Do you hear an abundance of people talking about 357 sig? At the same level as 9 mm? 357 sig is clearly superior so you would definitely think you would hear about it more.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 8 месяцев назад
It has a lot going for it, in that it was never really "downloaded for qualification purposes." It is also suitable for much less feeding problems. It has generous powder capacity for the size of the projectile. It's smaller than .45 but no bigger than .40 so capacity isn't hugely effected. It carries enough velocity to move it clear out of "9mm problems" and into another zip code.

I hear that a lot too. These 9mm guys will tell you that .380 ACP is garbage because it's roughly 150 ft lbs less energy than the 9mm+P. Same breath tell you that the .357 Sig is no more effective than the 9mm+P (despite it's 150 ft lbs energy gain over the 9mm). Agree! Both are more than acceptable. But the Sig is clearly more powerful and that should translate to better terminal performance if/when needed. I worked with a Sheriff's Department nearly 2 decades ago and they switched from Sig P226 9mm to Glock 21 45 acp. The primary reason was the number of rounds the 9mm was taking to stop the threat in the LE database from 1990 to 2000. There are a good number of LE testimonials that support are "more powerful" round than the 9mm. There are plenty as well that would indicate that it is "more than" sufficient most of the time.

thanks - a fun video. the accuracy at 75 yards is pretty amazing to me. and up to 30 yards I in my limited experience would think either/or - however the 357 sure seemed to hit harder and ring louder when it hit and even the misses would seem to be accurate enough to hit something on the body at 40 to 75 yards - which then means to me if I just hit a lower leg, arm, shoulder, or thigh area and missed the torso I would still have the power to make a person think again about coming closer for sure.

9mm can be adequate for human defense, but in my view we should all just settle down and admit that it's not a "power caliber"; it's a "shot placement caliber"... And this is why it's never recommended as a woods caliber.

I've always felt as if the resurgence of the 9mm Para was due to influences unrelated to performance. Chiefly, it is a low-recoil round that is easier to shoot than more powerful rounds especially for small-framed officers and those unwilling to spend the time necessary to master a more capable round. One needs only to sift through the countless videos available of police officers having to pump round after round of 9mm into suspects in order to incapacitate them. For me, the .357 Magnum is the gold standard among all handgun rounds, but if you are limited to automatics, the .45 ACP is a capable second. The .357 Sig is probably next in line, and I've never understood why it is not more popular.

IMHO it's related to the material shortage. Ammo/gun companies are running government contracts and its easier and cheaper for them to focus on one caliber. Another tinfoil hat proposal is its easier to control ammo flow of one caliber. If they turn off 9mm your 9mm guns are pointless
@dannydean3024

Cost and availability hurt .357sig. You need to be able to run lots of ammo through your carry gun. I love my 1911 in 45acp. But capacity and concelabilitey are concerns. So 9mm is adequate. If you head over to Turkey's Opinion, he's done a test on the whole .40 vs. 10mm debacle. Demonstrating the issue with how the industry typically loads the stuff. .40 is formidable, handily. But just like anything in that caliber, selection is the key to it. Stout .40 S&W in the right brand will out-speed most of the 10mm loads on the market. It really is very pathetic what industry has done to the .40 caliber stuff.

GOOD VIDEO! I SEE 9mm AS THE PRACTICAL CHOICE FOR PERSONAL DEFENSE BECAUSE OF AVAILABILTY! IF THERE'S AMMO AT THE STORE THEY'LL HAVE 9mm. I personally agree with your point of view (evidence you have is fact after all) but I will carry a 9mm most times just because it's kind of a workhorse (not the best or worst at anything and does everything you need to do). Speed doesn't mean penetration as much as more trauma in the first part of the wound, so if the vitals are in that area it would die faster, because of more damage but it won't enable you to take larger game because of that it will just expire sooner, which is what you want for an attacker or a dangerous animal. So not a 9mm "fan boy" there is no perfect cartridge for every situation, defeating armor/bone I believe that speed is superior in that case to break through and cause a lethal wound but you already know that. The caps were a joke because of the pinned comment! 9mm is here to stay but it's not more powerful just ample in most cases a compromise. (the first personal defense round that has enough power to hurt a people/attacker). I was surprised when I watched a video with a test with rifles and the penetration was hardly different in gel with a round of the same weight that had 15% more speed.(1.75") I wonder how the 350 legend stacks up and what type of bullet you should use to get the penetration you need? (should be a good prepper round being you can use 9mm bullets to reload and it has 5.56 brass, so you should be able to find that stuff)

If I had to make three classes of ammo, 1. being all the popular stuff like 9mm, .45 ACP, .380 ACP and so on and 3. being really hard stuff to find like .327 Federal Mag or .45 Super, I would say it would be in a class 2. along with .44 Special, .32 S&W Long, .25 ACP and others that are always floating around out there and most people know about.

Noice hits at 75. I don't even understand hitting something that far with a handgun. Impressive. I did take my naa mini mag to the range yesterday and was able to put 5 rounds in the head box as 15 feet, which I was pretty happy about with a sub 2 inch barrel. Still hoping you do some 22mag ballistics tests with an naa! 😊

when you shoot stuff very far away with a handgun, it sharpens the senses and skills. Basic marksmanship is more important than most other elements of handgun defense. How much time do I need to aim to place all my shots center mass at 7 yards? Not a lot, and with no sights.

Pretty impressive overall. I normally don't think much of the Hornady Custom although it is definitely better than the American Gunner. Great shooting. Now I'm wondering why Lucky Gunner was so down on the 357 Sig a few years back when he was basically citing IWBA material and the like. That criticism of the cartridge also got applied to the 357 Magnum which is quite a flash bang out of a 2" barrel.

@GunSam
@GunSam 7 месяцев назад
From what I have to go off from, such as stories of .357 Magnum and limited footage of .357 Sig shootings, it appears .357 Sig really is a one shot stop cartridge. From what I have seen with .40 S&W, it's generally a cartridge resolving an incident with 2 shots or so. I personally carry .40 S&W in my pistol in my vehicle as I know it's going to function fine and be easier to shoot to some degree, less flash. I feel like .40 S&W is about as high as I want to go while still retaining that reliable low flash cartridge.

One thing I don't recall ever seeing addressed in gel tests across the board of RU-vid videos, is the discussion of what might occur should a projectile penetrate beyond the "idea" depth in the real world. Do people believe that a bullet that's left the target medium possesses the exact same lethality as it did when it entered the target medium? It's not a laser beam. It's not a self propelled torpedo. It's not a drill bit. It's not nuclear radiation. It's not acid. It's a piece of metal. It's not unlike a stone flung from a slingshot. After 16 inches of gel, should a round break free, it's not likely it has enough energy to break a tough piece of leather, or skin for that matter. You might have as much danger with it (in this scenario) as you would someone throwing a small stone as hard as they can. It's gonna hurt. It's dangerous. But it has had most of its momentum and velocity removed already.

I paid $21.99 for each of these boxes. Sure the 9mm has 5 more rounds in the box, but where are you coming up with 'more than twice the price' from? It's weird and not factual. I can buy .357 Sig in 50 round boxes of target ammo also for $22-$25. While that might be twice as much as the bottom dollar 9mm ammo, it's not at a prohibitive level. Please give sources for your info. You obviously made it up, which annoys me.

@@GunSam I didn't make it up. Those were online prices I saw. Still, by your own admission it's more expensive and that could be prohibitive for a lot of people. I just do not see .357 Sig as cost prohibitive. Like, how many rounds do you need? I am not a competition shooter, I talk self defense, carrying a better caliber really doesn't negate whatever training you can get on a different firearm. @@GunSam I don't have anything against 357 Sig or anyone owning that caliber or any other that they can afford. All I'm saying is that 9mm in most cases is quite a bit cheaper than 357 Sig and that makes it cheaper to practice with. 9mm with the right ammo will more often than not, stop any human threat. 357 Sig is a great round and it is superior to 9mm, but not everyone can afford to practice with it on a regular basis. I'm one of them, at least at this point. I would love to have a 10mm but right now I just can't afford one. To me all calibers have their place and uses, I don't hate any of them, but cost of feeding them can be an issue for some. Is the 9mm Hornady 147grain indeed "subsonic"? Because Hornady makes two different boxes, same specs and all, and one box is like the one in the video, and one has a big label 'Subsonic". Why did the second set of shots do more flowering? The denim made the bullets expand whereas straight gel does not?

The Hornady Custom and the Subsonic have the same velocity rating. Saying 9mm is just as good a .357sig is like saying .40S&W is just as good as 10mm. You can always cherry pick loads to make one beat the other, but the best of the latter is always better than the best of the former...
@GunSam
@GunSam 8 месяцев назад
My favorite cherry picking video was Military Arms Channel and his 2018 video "9mm spanks the .38 Special and rivals .357 Magnum". He used a Glock 43 3.41" barrel and used Gold Dot 9mm+P and got 1,145 FPS, then in a snub nose used Starfire .38 Special+P 125 gr from a S&W M&P snub 1.875" and got 789 FPS lol. A normal .38 Special+P load in a snub gives around 900 FPS, Buffalo Bore does like 1,100 FPS in a snub. Then uses .357 Magnum 125 gr American Gunner and got 1,090 FPS lol. A normal Remington HTP/UMC 125 gr does an easy 1,250 FPS from a 2" barrel. End result, 9mm had 361 ft lbs energy, .357 Magnum had 330 ft lbs energy and the .38 Special had 173 ft lbs energy. Like what a joke. He 'proved' 9mm is more powerful than even .357 Magnum. The issue I have is while that 9mm+P number of 361 ft lbs from a short barrel is correct, literally every .38 Special+P like Critical Defense, UMC etc is 225 ft lbs energy and Buffalo Bore/Underwood is closer to 350 ft lbs. The .357 Magnum in a snub, depending on load gives me 420-480 ft lbs energy from my 2" snub.
