It’s incredible to see the difference in how an ocean liner such as the QM2 handles these weather conditions compared to the likes of your standard 4K passenger top heavy cruise ship! It looks like it was a comfortable trip despite the weather!
This is why I'd always say ocean liners are superior to cruise ships, they're made to withstand high winds and waves. Have you seen cruise ships in storms when all their tables and chairs moves around and break
Enjoyable! That row of window seats on Deck 3 forward is such a great place to hang out and watch the sea. It's always a thrill when they reach eye level...or above! I was aboard QM2 on her early June 2017 westbound transatlantic crossing, when she was diverted to rescue the stranded solo yachtsman Mervyn Wheatley. We had just passed through a major Atlantic depression which generated very high seas and strong winds. Crew members said it was the worst conditions they'd seen in ten years. The ship's pitch and roll motions were pretty substantial at times- passengers walking the passageways did so weaving side to side and bumping walls! But she is designed for this duty, and is manned by an exceptional crew.
I was scheduled to cruise west in May of that year, but had to cancel. Lost 2000 pounds which sucked, but it seems I would have missed the action of your June crossing regardless. I booked a solo cabin right down near the water with the large round windows.
I have personally been on the QM2 during a force 9 wind (one notch below hurricane strenght). We sat in the Britannia dining room and enjoyed a very pleasant dinner, no real diffenece from a calm sea. Done 5 crossings. The ship is just amazing!
That's because of active stabilizers that greatly reduce ship rolling. Too expensive to have on cargo ships or cheap passenger ferries, but all serious superliners have them.
I was on a Celebrity cruise ship when an early Nor’easter blew in and produced similar seas. It was the last New England East Coast cruise of the year. The Captain promptly headed into safe harbor at Nova Scotia to ride out the storm. I never felt threatened, but would have felt safer on a ship like QM2.
Of course. the QM2 was designed to be capable of regular service crossing the Atllantic, rain or shine. None of these floating hotels is a real ship and none can do that.
I did this same voyage in 2018 the seas were much bigger and she handled it with ease! I am hyper envious of you on the only true liner! My Uncles are doing the Christmas voyage right now! Amazing ship! Thanks for the memories!
@@outsidersongs2682 to be honest if I didn’t look outside you wouldn’t know it was storm force! Obviously if you go right to the extremes of the ship, fore, aft or top decks you would feel the movement more! We stayed deck 6 mid ships and genuinely felt very little movement
So much better than on those rediculous floating hotel resorts. She is a true ocean going vessel. I have crossed the Atlantic on my 44’ sailboat. Been in force 8. Also have crossed on a Carnival ship and the Wind Star small sailing cruise boat/yacht. Love it all. But for comfort and safety, id take the QM 2!
I’m really, really envious. When I left Fleetwood Nautical College my first position was as one of the Radio Officers on MVQE2 (callsign GBTT). In a perverse way I loved the rough weather as the majority of passengers were too sea sick to bother us in the Radio Room with requests for telephone calls. Two notable occasions were when we sailed through Hurricane Bertha in the Mexican Gulf, and when we went to the rescue of an Oil Rig in the North Sea as it had lost its anchor points and life boat in Force 12 seas. Happy times. I’ve yet to experience a cruise as a passenger though. Regards Nidge.
nothing preverse about it, the 8 days without stops for sightseeing can be quite boring, esp after you've read all the books in that nice ship library.
Reassuring the grand lady does well in vicious storms. It's been an issue deciding to book a crossing. Thanks for the video. My questions have been answered.
I sailed on her last December coming home from Europe though a force 9/10 gale. The ship was very sturdy and you felt almost nothing mid ship....but I felt the swells in my cabin in the bow of the ship...I loved it!
This is what differentiates an ocean liner from a cruise ship. In bad weathers cruise ships are supposed to stay in harbors but ocean liners keep on steaming.
I love these different videos especially this one having been a sailor in a previous life on a submarine. We didn't have those beautiful windows but I share the excitement of an angry sea. Hope you offer a lengthy video of your travels.
This is slightly puzzling because while the weather report says hurricane force winds (force 12), the sea state is only "very rough", which is 4 - 6m and the seas expected with force 7. Above "very rough" are high, very high and phenomenal. The latter (over 14m/46 feet) is expected with force 12, with sea conditions being "air filled with foam and spray, sea completely white with driving spray, visibility very seriously affected." Looks like you got off lightly!
I am in the initial phase of research for my 2022 or 2023 bucket list QM2 solo transatlantic adventure and haven't decided on a time of year yet. I was thinking of doing a December crossing, but am afraid that a storm like that would remind me of The Posiden Adventure.
Never want to see QM 2 get scrapped be it 20 years from now. Too beautiful to be dragged and cut up like ocean liner SS FRANCE (Norway) was iin 2006 in Alang.
I would be the woman sitting at the window. To see the Atlantic first hand in a hurricane, gliding through it... that is an incredible thing to get the chance to see.
I’ve been on the QM2 in conditions similar to this for one day of the trip, NY to Southampton. It was mildly uncomfortable but this video definitely does NOT show hurricane conditions. Having said that the QM2 is a fine ship. It’s the only way to go in my humble opinion.
This was 3 weeks ago Zola. When we got to New York the sun was out and it got warmer as we made our way to the Caribbean. It was a fantastic trip. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
I did a south Atlantic Crossing on the Queen Mary two Christmas sofa Lantic crossing from Southampton to New York then onto the Caribbean then back to New York City and then back to Southampton we ended up hitting a major storm at sea all the way to New York City and then coming back from the Caribbean to New York City we hit a major snowstorm that totally shut down New York City this was in 2012 to 2013 but it was a holiday I will never forget I don’t think I would ride the Queen Mary two again it was a bit Hootie tutti for me too posh not my cup of tea but it was an amazing holiday I will never forget thank you Cunard
Same but a few years later. Was an amazing experience. I'd rather do another tour of the Mediterranean first on Queen Elizabeth but wouldn't say no to another transatlantic in the future. Thanks for sharing Dave.
Thanks for the video. Windy, but the waves looked rather insignificant. No 100 foot waves there. Still, If I took a trip w the QM2, I'd do it in the winter so the weather would be interesting, esp since the ship does not stop at any interesting ports along the way.
@@joannexavier-troxel6956 Why spend all that money. Get some store brand Benadryl (brand name) AKA Diphenhydramine (generic drug name) .. It's the same ingredient that produces the anti-nausea effect as dramamine, works just as well, but costs almost nothing in comparison. Dramamine is just diphenhydramine mixed with a little bit of a stimulant to counter the side effect that diphenhydramine makes you tired. You can just take a couple store brand diphenhydramine and drink a cup of coffee and get exactly the same effect. Lol. Except it's literally pennies on the dollar compared to dramamine... Side note, The brand Benadryl is a completely different drug in the UK so to avoid confusion (and save money) just always look for diphenhydramine rather than the brand name.
I avoid unnecessary pills. AMericans are notorious about solving every real or perceived problem by filling their palm with pills and throwing them in their mouths, and their physicians have a big share of theblame encouraging it.
Boat is pretty stable. I remember a very rough Portsmouth-Bilbao crossing, there was vomit everywhere and you couldn't walk in straight lines.I remember an asian man and a small boy about 5-7. The man was guiding his son round the various ash trays in the lobby to vomit. Here's one, quick it's full over to the next.
I’ve been through one of those in the Pacific aboard the USS Juneau (LPD-10) crossing from Sasebo Japan 🇯🇵 to San Francisco CA 🇺🇸. We had 4 helicopters 🚁 on the flight deck and were chained down,
Oh Heck I can't believe you were State side and didn't come for some South Hospitality, a cold Drink, I would have balt and check out the Potential Essential US Extension, But I don't know if I could have remembered my own name after that luxurious Sail across the sea ! Oh my God That's was Nuts! Maybe next trip when seas are calm!
It was very early in the morning on that day. Maybe 0700 so no great surprise. But even the rest of the time with 2600 onboard you could be walking on most of the decks and not see too many people. The ship is THAT big.
Essential RC I know what you mean, we have cruised from Vancouver to Alaska and from Los Angeles to Mexico and there hardly seemed to be many around except at meal times.
Yeah! There was virtually no roll. Quite amazing. Pitching was significant but enough hand rails to hold onto so could move around. I think straps to hold me in bed would have been good though ! Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
@@EssentialRC something amazing that happened in 1956 was the collision of the doria. everyone on board was saved after the ile de france turned around to pick up everyone from the doria in under 3 hours. No-one died that day because of the rapid response of ships nearby. Interesting heroic story
Got an opportunity to see this Majestic Ship Queen Elizabeth II when she birth in Honolulu Harbor. I was a teenager then. About 2 weeks later she was painted Haze Gray and underway to the Falkland Islands. She is a beautiful stately ship. God bless the ship's crew of SS Queen Elizabeth II.
I watched a very impressive video on the Queen Mary 2 ! I got to ask did they have that Amazing Light Show while you were on board! A dumb one here what about during the Hurricane did they light her up to calm the guests?
This type of storm is what the Anthem of the Sea’s had to deal with and and QM2 had know trouble at all an had no damage. But she was built very strong as a Ocean Liner not a cruise ship.
We survived and I'm back. This was 5 days into a 19 day cruise just before we got to New York. Mildly uncomfortable experience and worth it for the subsequent 14 days of sunshine. We'll definitely do it again. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
I'm back but have a lot of product reviews to catch up on plus compilation videos to edit and upload...so won't be until new year now. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)
That's not what I call a proper force 12. It's got the wind, but not the waves. Not that i'm a believer, but a proper force 12 is like the hand of god.
