POTENTIALLY 8 DAYS OF TERROR CROSSING THE NORTH ATLANTIC FROM BROOKLYN, NY TO SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND.

We left Brooklyn, NY on a sunny but cold day. When we boarded the ship the captain made it very clear we were going to face multiple storms. And we did! THANK GOODNESS WE WERE ON THE QUEEN MARY 2!
The Queen Mary 2 is the only actively sailing ocean liner in the world. We were so fortunate to be able to sail on her from New York to Southampton and eventually on to Perth Australia. However the 8 day sailing from New York to Southampton was a journey all by itself with 3 straight days and nights of massive storms and one day of gale force winds. The Queen Mary 2, because of her ocean liner design and the way she was built, handled all the storms like a hot knife through butter. We felt a little rocking and felt safe the whole time. We really embraced the storms only because of the way the ship could handle them.
We think if it was any other ship we may have had a “may-day” situation. It was 3 straight days & nights of 30 to 40 foot sea swells, extremely high winds, snow and ice.
We were able to have some fun with the situation only because the QM2 made it safe for us.
Thank you for coming along on our journey around the world.

I was on this crossing and opted to not go outside. I enjoyed the warm comfort inside watching the ocean boil while sipping vino and nodding off with a book from the very impressive library.

Thanks for such a great video of OUR trip too! Bravo! My sis commented above plus my bro and his wife were on this crossing as well…in the fifties we spent months at sea … on Cunard from England to Canada or on the month long trips on P&O from Southampton to or from Sydney Australia via South Africa or via Suez with stops in Yemen India & Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)… dad’s career took us around the world….so the sea is imprinted in our dna!

That's the best thing about being on the Queen Mary 2. It's not a cruise ship, it's an actual ocean liner as you say, built specifically to withstand this type of weather without any issues whatsoever whilst crossing the Atlantic. Your vlog is a perfect example of this. What a beauty she really is. I hope you enjoyed your time on it. I enjoyed watching. Great video👍🏽.

My father was a plate boy on a North Atlantic crossing to Montreal. In about 1930. He described the crossing as one foot in the floor with the other foot on the wall and then when it rolled the other way you put the floor foot on the other wall. He was on a white star liner so consider conditions in those days. He also said to stop sea sickness just eat digestives to soak up !!!!! Tales like that give a little perspective.

Thank you for your comments and coming along on our journey around the world. We are currently on a cruise ship in the North Atlantic and have been faced with two days of storms. I would call the two days of rough seas little baby storms compared to what we experienced on the QM2. We are currently being thrown around and people are getting sick, there is a huge difference between a cruise ship and an ocean liner in stormy seas. The QM2 is an amazing ocean liner we can say from experience!

I was on this crossing and the ship performed quite well. I was also in an inside cabin and other than one night from about 2:00 am-5:00 am, I was quite comfortable and no sea sickness. It was a generally unremarkable crossing. The only frustrating part is Cunard's on-going austerity measures. This is playing itself out in food quality with the one exception being brekkie. Spa is also run down and dirty. It was a better product when it was Canyon Ranch. But the cigar lounge, Commodore Club and Chart Room remain an elegant experience.

So I went to deck 7 and had some tea and waited it out. There were no surprises. The Captain provided good and correct info as far what was coming our way and when it would settle down. But I want to be clear: the liner ship attributes of QM2 really shined

@hubbardsjourney 3 месяца назад
Yes, dressing up in the dining room is a requirement. On gala night a suit, tie or tux with tie. On non gala nights it’s called smart attire night dress pants and button shirt. If you are eating on deck 7 where the buffet is. It has a much more laid back environment, you can get by with jeans & a t-shirt if you want on either night. It's really a beautiful ship and worth booking at least one voyage.Thank you for your comment and for coming along on our journey around the world.

Ahem... It's pronounced "kuunard", not "q-nard". Anyway, that's the kind of crossing I'd like to have. The ship obviously handles the swells with ease; it seems to be hardly moving off the level. Oh, and well done wearing a tuxedo on the formal evenings. I know the rules, as well as just the social expectations, onboard Cunard ships are probably the highest on any passenger line. But, still, I've seen some videos catching people in very casual attire in the lounges and dining rooms, in the evenings, on Cunard vessels. As someone who wears tuxedo on the formal nights, myself, I commend you for doing your part to keep the standards up. 👍

@@hubbardsjourney Hey you 2! Thanks for this. I'm in the editing phase of the 1st draft. And a lot are changing. I can't believe that the editing would be this demanding, and not the 1st edition. But what did I know? Not this 😆 Anyway, yes i would like to know for your feelings. Like how did if felt walking the slippery decks? You know, little details that can give the sense of actually being there. Like how cold was the air passing through your hair? Did you feel scared or fascinated? And the food! What time did they serve? And are there fixed times, or anyone can bust in whenever they hangry? What about the boarding process? Did you feel like you couldn't wait to get on the ship? In general, just kill me with uninteresting little details you can think of like my questions. They can be extremely valuable to a noob like me. As for my book, you csn check what's what in my website tiberanic.weebly.com. No scams in there. Just a passionate writer writing a lot about his book, oh and ways to contact me! An email with your thoughts about your experience on qm2 would be invaluable. Or from here, I don't mind. Just give me uninteresting little details.

The deck railings should be much higher being its very easy to fall overboard. The railings should be at least several feet higher.

Hi Jay, I can see why you would say that but, it's actually pretty safe as long as you don't go too close to the edge in a huge storm.Thank you for your comments and coming along on our journey around the world.

Well I heard on the news that a few people have wound up overboard either leaning or sitting across the top deck railings. Luckily onlookers hollered for help and they retrieved the people, but there were one or two cases where they couldn't find the other people. Maybe they were devoured by sharks.

This is not a cruise for first timers. I've only been on 1 cruise in my life. It was a Royal Caribbean cruise that barely moved. I was scared the whole time (fear of body of water) . Thank you for sharing this video. I can at least experience this vicariously through you (without the anxiety). I wonder if there's a less stormy season to cross the Atlantic?

Hi Ian, That's awesome!!! It was a great cruise we got on in NY and got off in Perth Australia. I hope you can see it says “potentially”. Which is a true statement. No question the ship was built for these types of situations however, 3 straight days and nights of storms, potentially anything could have been. Either way it was a great cruise on a great ship. Rough weather in the North Atlantic in January? Who could have ever guessed it. They were not exactly running flat out either. Probably less that 20 knots. Econonmizing I guess. The old Queens could do the trip in what? 4 days I think.
@dl11950
@dl11950 3 месяца назад
The old steamers [Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth] routinely made 5 day crossings - but they also had an over 24 hour layover in port at each end of the crossing. QM2 can do a five day crossing, but the vast majority are scheduled for 7 days. This leaves a reserve of time & speed for medical evacuations or to route around inclement weather. [and more on board spending for the bottom line]
@hubbardsjourney
@hubbardsjourney 3 месяца назад
Yes, they were cruising along at 19 knots. Thank you for the comments and coming along on our journey.

@@hubbardsjourneyYes, this is not the 1940's or 1950's. If you want to go fast you take an airplane. It's about the voyage itself. I would like to do it sometime.

@@hubbardsjourney Actually what I meant about economizing was going slower to save fuel. It would take huge power increase to take the speed from 19 kts to the high 20's, or 30 kts. More power more fuel consumption. I see the normal service speed of the QM2 is listed as 26 kts, with a top speed of 30 kts. Compared to the original QM's service speed of 28.5 kts and top speed of over 30 knts. But then in the case of going slower as you did, you will be burning fuel to power the hotel load(which I think would be substantial) for a couple of extra days. But I am sure they have done the math lol.
