I know, right?! It baffles me. My theory is that maybe Casio don’t want us to “settle” with the feature-set of this one, affordable watch? 😜 Thanks so much Paul 🙏 I’m feeling relieved it didn’t get cooked, too! 😅
developing a flat chip (that thing under the blob in the middle of the PCB) takes resources, so they just change the screen and resin between models (even that is challenging and their mold design is probably on another level). Or maybe the engineers just wanted to have fun, there are other casio watches with unlockable features (ae 1200 iirc has some unlockable features as well)
The reasons for disable function like that because in the same range of production of Casio watches, they use the same module so they can just code one time for all the watch, not have to write different code to each different watch model. Then in the factory is soldering follow the design. The design purposely cut off to create different feature range for each watch and it based on the LCD of the watch, so that's why.
This mod has been around for a bit. Nice execution btw. From what I've seen on other videos, timer repeat function is also available except no indicator icon letting you know it is on. Same deal for extra alarms. They are available but no indicator icon saying they are on/active.
Cheers Eric, I appreciate the feedback! 🙏 Excellent - yes I have been advised by a viewer and friend “RedWyvern” that there is a way to ‘keep track’ of the repeating timers, and also the multiple alarms, even without the visual indicators! Very intuitive. Here’s a link to the forum post of the instructions he wrote, if you’re interested: www.watchuseek.com/threads/hidden-function-in-my-casio-w800h-module-what-the-heck-can-i-turn-it-on.650650/page-5
very nicely done. countdown timer and 5 alarms. also the is a auto repeat count down timer as well, when you set the countdown timer hit the light button to turn on or off. thank you for the shout out homie. there is couple of other models that share the module.
Wait… Auto Repeat as well?! 🤩 This just gets better and better! My steaks will be perfected a step further now 🥩👌 Well deserved. Thank you so much Eksoteric, you the real MVP! 🙏🥲
Thank you Arcadian! 🙌 I’m so pleased with the resulting functionality 🤩 Haha, I’m no surgeon… 👨🏻⚕️ I believe anyone (including you) with the patience and tools could do it! 😁🙏
Difficult to find an explanation why these functions are disabled. It is clear that the motherboard and CPU are also used in other models (I don't know which ones) and with this "system" of limitations they justify the different price. The model that uses the same motherboard with the functions unlocked, however, probably mounts a display that allows you to view the infos that are missing on the W800: for example the active status of one of the 5 alarms. Great job, very clean.
You’re onto it, Davide! 👌 That’s the most logical conclusion. I’d love to know which models the board is used in. As it may provide insight as to what bridging point “4” for example does, which remains a mystery. Perhaps it does enable the active status of one of the 5 alarms! You know, I did actually purchase a syringe of liquid “silver” paste, which can be used to temporarily bridge connections, and then easily wipe it away afterwards to return to normal (so you don’t have to commit to soldering it which is risky). Perhaps now that I know what I am doing with cracking open modules, I can try other watches (like returning to the w-217h, which I plan on opening soon 😉) Thank you for your insights 🙏 You never cease to amaze me with your in depth analysis of the possibilities!
My guess is that this is the watch Casio used to test a new chip, one which they seem to use in many new watches. E.G. the AE-1500WH behaves identically to a timer and 5 alarm modded W-800H. And a B640W behaves like the 1 alarm, timer and no duel time setting, with an added backlight alarm so that might be one of the unknown settings. For Casio it's cheaper and less error-prone to drop in the same known-good chip and to configure it with jumpers baked in the PCB, or exposed here so they can test the settings.
Could the disabling of features be for the 10 year battery life? 5 alarms seem kinda taxing on a button battery. Great mod job on the watch! Soldering is clean!
What an interesting idea. That does make a lot of sense 💡 Perhaps this is the answer! 🙏 Thank you, Gigachad! I’m absolutely delighted with it’s new found functionality 😁👌
@@andrewlevett4274 Good point! Unless you’re cranking all the alarms frequently it wouldn’t impact it… 🤔 I guess that means the real reason is Casio just want to GATEKEEP US from the good features 🤣
The resin strap literally falls apart into pieces as the material becomes hardened, so its half-life is around ten years. However, the watch and even the original battery still work.
Cool idea! 💡 It really depends on the watch, as only some are capable. I believe I have a watch in my backlog to review, that this mod is possible on. I will keep this in mind! Thanks for the suggestion 🙏
Really cool! You should see if you can swap the micro controller or board on the gw-m5610u or other g-shocks maybe you can do the soldering trick for those as well?? Also I wanted to know how can I change the back reflector's colour like for example the g-shock DW-6900A-2 has a white background, I think they achieve this by changing the back reflector colour.
Cheers, Salt Pinch! 🧂🤏 I appreciate the idea 💡 Now that I’ve done this one, I feel like the doors have opened! So now I will have this on my radar 👀👌 You can indeed change the reflector! It’s not something I’ve done personally yet, but a few of the fellows in our Discord Channel have done so, and posted the results and steps! I’m sure they’ll be happy to help further! 🙏
Have that exact model. The watch is vey light and nimble than my G shocks and its refreshing switching from one another after a week on the wrist. Its just I'm afraid to mod mine though😂
Good stuff, Marcus! It does feel light on the wrist in comparison, right?! 🙏 Haha, don’t worry I totally understand. It can be intimidating to risk breaking it! If you need a hand at all, feel free to reach out to myself, or anyone in our Discord Channel 😁
That is a fantastic question, GottaGeek! 🤔💭 I don’t know the answer, and I’ve never heard anyone talk about this before! If I had to guess, the odds of the motherboard being configured in such a way that an obvious solder bridge would be accessible and have this impact, would be low. But I’d love to find out some day! Perhaps I can have a look at the board next time I’m inside one. Thanks for the suggestion! 🙏
Hi Sabo, yes it can still be used in water! I didn't take the buttons or lens out, or compromise their waterproof seals. The only part I took off was the backplate, and I am sure to grease the rubber gasket before installing it again 😄👌
@@saboclub9766The grease is well worth the price to pick up! 👌 Without it, you could be careful not to touch the gasket or let any of the existing grease rub off, and it may be fine to reseal it.
Cheers Rick! 👌 I appreciate your viewership, and feedback. The way I look at it, is that these 'Secret' features were strategically disabled by Casio for one reason or another... PERHAPS to drive sales towards other watches 😜🤔
I’m not aware of a list - at the time I did this mod I did do a bit of digging on this topic as I too, was curious. Perhaps we need someone to do a more thorough test to document what exactly each of these connection-points does when bridged, or unbridged! I might have a crack at this in the future. 👌 Thanks for the idea, Allan! 🙏
Great question, Daro! 👌 I wish I knew the answer to that, but I don’t. 🥲 It would be fascinating to find out if there’s any other features hidden away! If anyone else knows - please chime in below 😁
Great question, Mohammed! 👌 I'm not 100 percent sure. I do have the similar F-201W in my backlog to review, so I'll test it on this model when I review it! Thanks for the suggestion. 🙏
G’day Tim! 👋 You’re absolutely right - it would be much easier to just buy a watch with these functionalities enabled! Here’s a few reasons one might consider this mod, instead of buying: 🤷🏻♂️ Already own a W800H. 💰 W800H cheaper, or more readily available than alternatives. 🤩⚙️ A love of tinkering!
I know Casio uses the same modules for multiple watches, and enable/disable certain features based on the watch. I wonder if activating all 5 alarms affects the Snooze alarm function in any way. In it's original form, it may only have 1 alarm, but that alarm can be toggled to be a Snooze alarm(an alarm that repeats every 5 minutes for about 7 times). I'm curious if all 5 alarms can be made to be a Snooze alarm, or just the first. There might be some kind of 'glitching'(unusual operation) that goes with this mod, but I wouldn't know. On another note, I do have a question. Does anyone know if this watch could fit into one of those SKXMod cases used for the 'Casio Royale'? They are compatible with other similarly sized watches, but nobody has confirmed nor denied if it fits the case. This watch is good enough for a case upgrade.
This is a great question! 🤔 The following guide written by RedWyvern on this page may be useful to you: www.watchuseek.com/threads/hidden-function-in-my-casio-w800h-module-what-the-heck-can-i-turn-it-on.650650/page-5#post-57202226 To answer your question, the W800H module is not the same size as the 'Casio Royale' module. As an example of a very similar size module which is compatible, is the new WS-1700H. But even this needs some slight trimming of the face plate to fit! 😁
@@goatreviews Thanks for the reply. It's a bummer there's no case mod for this watch, cause I would love to see sapphire glass on such a legible display. Also, that link you sent answered all the questions regarding the mods 'glitches'. It says that only the first alarm can be a snooze alarm, and the 'hacked' added alarms do not make the alarm indicator light up. Also, the 'hacked' timer has a repeater function that can be toggled, but lacks any indicator when it is enabled.
@@4chanresearchdivision107 No problem my friend! 😁 Glad the link was useful for you. 👌 It would be nice to have a truly specced- up case for this awesome watch! 🤩
Hahaha, not gonna lie, I went through a bit of a "Steak Phase"! 🥩 I've toned it down a bit since then... Myabe once a week now? 😅 Are you a steak fan, Evan? 👀
@@goatreviews I can relate, i've also had a GD-350 as a cooking watch lol. That dedicated timer button is killer. I'm going through a thick cut pork chop grilling phase myself. haha btw, you should checkout the Rangeman GW-9400, it has a dedicated stop watch button that's really useful if you need to quickly time something. I've used it for cooking also but since its not a timer i just use it to keep track of the minutes and reset it as needed.
@@Evansmustard Heyyyy, fellow GD-350 chef! 👨🍳🙏 Ooh, that sounds delightful! 🐖👌 Oh man, the Rangeman sounds incredible for this purpose! I’d love to own and review one some day 🤩💭
